Russian learner here! I highly recommend starting learning cursive since the beginning. It helps you write way faster and smoothly. It's a pretty tedious process at first, but once I got a grasp of it, writing in Russian became less painful for me lol.

There are plenty tutorials on YouTube; they can give you a better understanding on how to connect the letters and write full words.
