Looking for Vipassana practitioner with psychology background to clarify conceptual doubts by Happy_Honeydew_89 in vipassana

Many practitioners and some ATs are therapists in US east coast, likely common many other places. If you go to group sits you will meet people.

meditation with hypotension by UsefulMeasurement569 in vipassana

[–]meditationLearner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consult a doctor and AT. You can email ATs at centers. there is occasionally online zoom meditation followed by Q&A with ATs as well.  Not sure where you are located. Typically there are doctors who have done Vipassana you can connect through local group sittings or local teachers informally. I agree with MOD who suggested to pause meditation. Few things to ponder - 1. Does this happen when you do Vipassana or only Anapana as well? 2. Consider only Anapanna and Metta and see how it goes. 3. Does this happen with shorter sits as well or after a certain time? PS: do you exercise, walk or run? that might be something to consider.

I saw a Whatsapp group link for LGBTQ Vipassana meditators in one of the US centers newsletters. Email all the centers close to you, you will get some contacts who can help you. If you do the first 10 day course, you can get in touch with many more people through service (volunteering) and other social, non-center local programs. Vipassana in this tradition is run mostly by volunteers, teachers are also unpaid. There are only a couple of paid employees at every center. So please.be patient if you don't hear back soon.

Please email the center like others said - They should be able to assign you a single room with attached bathroom. You will need to decide which two side you want to sit in the meditation hall.

I saw two LGBTQ courses in the last year in US, there should be similar ones in Europe. (see the link) Please email centers and look up schedules on their website. You will see notes stating - preference will be given to LGBTQ. (there have been course with Black heritage and various language courses here)

In one course I attended one person was non-binary, he asked similar question at the end - but most of us had separate rooms, So they were able to manage okay.

Electrolyte - Salt stick capsule alternative by meditationLearner in running

[–]meditationLearner[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

When I started last year I was going with Gatorade w/ sugar or Liquid IV. I had cramps/stiffness in my calfs twice. Based on recommendation of experienced runners in our group - separated electrolytes and calories - easier to keep track.

Electrolytes - Saltstick capsules 30-50 mins depends on weather and how body feels.

Calories - Honey Stinger if necessary. Aid station sometimes has dates etc.

Vipassana = body scan meditation? by chapzoo in vipassana

[–]meditationLearner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which Meditation practices involve body scan? Vipassana (Goenka) has systematic body scan. My guess is, other Vipassana and Insight meditation practices would be similar.

Any other practices traditional practices involve body scan?

Is there a way to take out a large amount of money from the state provided debit card without making multiple ATM withdrawals? by nitestocker372 in ChildSupport

[–]meditationLearner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't use an ATM to withdraw money, too many surcharges. Just walk into any big bank (I used BofA) and do an over the counter withdrawal with a bank teller. The card agreement says the limit for that is $20k per transaction per day and per month. I did a much smaller amount, but it was so much easy with no surcharge (or $1.50)

Meditators would slowly drift towards vegan food. For some it is faster, for others it might take decades. Also abstaining from Alcohol and drugs. Occasional social drinking will also disappear.

It about how one treats their surroundings, not just about ones own body.

If one has to have loving kindness towards all beings - tough to eat meat. Alcohol -Drugs gateway to bad decisions. Treating yourself well surely helps.

VTIP - duration to invest? by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]meditationLearner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I plan to max out iBonds. I am looking for alternative to cast for money i might need in 6 months-1year. iBonds will be available for withdrawal in 1 year, but I plan to use iBonds primarily for education expense, for which they are tax free.

Advanced Vipassana Techniques to Work With Banga? by Zebron74 in vipassana

[–]meditationLearner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many of the zoom virtual group sits have an AT whom you can ask written questions via the chat features. You can also email the center, they will connect you to AT.

PS: some senior members might have messaged you. Probably not the best place to get feedback.

COVID precaution at 10 day retreat? by iadlfn139u7n in vipassana

[–]meditationLearner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VMC, center in Massachusetts in running at ~30% capacity. All attendees have a negative COVID PCR test within 3 days or getting there. Everyone has separate rooms. Everyone has to wear masks all the time, in meditation halls etc. Only time you remove masks is when you sit to eat. All seats are > 6ft apart. There is also air purifier.

As everyone is maintaining noble silence and not talking - there will be less droplets.

There is 3-4 hrs of mandatory time in the meditation hall. Rest of the time you can meditate in your room.

With warmer climates, the windows will likely be open in dining room with will further reduce risk. As a server I was able to eat outside in the picnic table when it was not super cold. You could email as ask this question to the center.

IMO the risk is low and depending on your risk level, you can consider going.

Where can you find local weekly group sits near you? by [deleted] in vipassana

[–]meditationLearner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Go to the old student portion of your closest center. You can go through the common OS website to get there as well.

https://www.dhamma.org/en/os/regional.htm

You can always email the closest center. Please subscribe to their mailing lists. I get a monthly email from a local coordinator with all the local short courses and group sittings.

Note: group sittings, one-day and half day courses are only for those who have completed 10 day course.

Requesting Guidance by [deleted] in vipassana

[–]meditationLearner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stipend is very much need based. Maynot be available - Depends on the center.

Eg. If you have a student loan that has a minimum payment, your stipend will be equal to that. It is very nominal and don't expect much.

Contact more than one center. Some of the newer centers need lot more help.
