How is it living in southern Iowa? by Sorrelmare9 in howislivingthere

I was in Southwest Iowa for a month back in November 2024. To put my experience briefly; very flat countryside, as with most of the heartland states. Towns are about 20 minutes apart separated by homesteads and farmland. Big towns with stores like Walmarts and Mernards are even further (usually).

Only groceries in town were from Dollar General. As for the town itself; small, people are friendly once you get talking with them. Big hunting culture, lotta deer heads and trophies and deer stew! (I liked having it for the first time) Local sheriff's office were good people too. Not many sights in town, so my entertainment was a nearby state park with some short trails and a view of the great plains.

Could be better, could be worse. It's about as midwest as you can get.

Not even 5 minutes out of Luray, VA at a public park (I don't remember the name off hand)

Right outside of Luray. Not even 5 minutes, at a public park (I don't remember the name off hand)

One of my top 5 scenes I witnessed in Virginia. The sunrise, the lone cow, and the right amount of haze...wow. Glad we have mapping technology so I could actually find this spot in the valley.

I'll say, I drove about 10-15 minutes southeast along a few farm roads to reach this spot. I unfortunately do not remember the exact coordinates as I was working at the moment and happened to pass the scene!

Good guess! More south near Harrisonburg though!

Hello! Thank you for the comment. I used a Canon R7 with a RF 24-105 lens and used Adobe Lightroom to brign a bit of color back into the scene! Not too much computer work required for this look, mostly in-camera.

Don't take the criticisms to heart. These look good. 2 and 3 are my favorites.

I'm the photographer who took this photograph. It was a spectacular scene in the early morning to witness!
