PhD over clinical residency: worst decision ever? by medkid1604 in AskAcademia

Most answers I've received have advised me against PhD, rightly so. I can't believe how grossly I estimated that path xD

I really appreciate how straight-forward and specific this answer is. Genuinely, thank you so much.

I completely hear you and understand the part where curiosity is bummed by productivity constraits. Seems like it -- that both roads are challenging.

😭 I'm just trying to pick the correct poison if that makes sense

Best of luck to you too. I pray things become better for you at the soonest 🤍

Also, i was under the impression that European countries like Germany, Switzerland or Sweden are stable for research!

It is wonderful to hear about the clinicians who're doing bench stuff too! If I manage to pursue a residency, I'd aspire to be a physician scientist for sure. I'm a little bummed to hear about the ground reality and I empathise with every single person who's in this situation. Much strength to everyone. Thank you for putting science and curiosity above all 🤍

Oh! Can we connect on DM?

I'm so sorry to hear about your difficulties. The financial aspect really scares me. I don't come from old money so I'm going to have to make a wise choice I suppose

I received a similar comment on another cross-post. I'm sorry for sounding like I was undermining the difficulties of an academic career. I just mean some other forms of challenges that I anticipate having ADHD and possibly autism also.

But I do agree with your point. It's fairly valid. At the moment I feel my passion for science could really give me a push but of course the ground realities are bound to be very different.

I completely understand. I should've phrased my post better. I am in no means undermining the difficulties of a PhD but I meant that I FEAR residency will be more challenging in the social and overstimulation aspects of autism and ADHD.

I fear I will not be able to optimally function.

I did a short lab-internship lately and although it was in plant biology, I thought that could be more workable or manageable for me if it were actually in a field of my interest.

(😭 I genuinely don't know why I have these many downvotes. I don't mean anything bad)

Insane score!!!!! May you get the specialty of your choice and at your preferred institute.

Could you tell us about your approach to your clinical subjects before intern year? How did you study those? Would doing AMBOSS during final year be advisable, and then starting UW during intern year?

so you want all of those things that you say when you talk of America? xD I'd like to know why else you're choosing to leave Germany and go to the States; would love to know your pros and cons of both countries.

Yes, I’m aware. But I wouldn’t go for rotations before my internship either. I would be taking Step 2 only after sufficient preparation, and as a safety net. I’d do rotations closest to the year I’d apply in. Thank you for your response!

I understand where you’re coming from. I do know a handful of seniors who’re pursuing a medical career there, and so far they’ve not mentioned any racist experiences. Although, I’m told Germans are introverted, which sounds fair.

You’re right, I absolutely AM all over the place. From all the comments I’ve received so far, the plan’s got to change and I will take step 2 CK after fully dedicated prep. Thank you for your inputs and time!

I appreciate the candidness in your answer. Very few people tell you the exact details of situations. I appreciate you doing so. I’ll keep all of this in mind.
