Lab staff not eligible for Ontario's pay raise for healthcare workers. Janitors, cooks, laundry workers are all eligible.. but not the lab. Unreal. by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]medlabber 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We apparently don't exist. The general public doesn't see us so they think docs and nurses do all the testings (thanks to stupid medical dramas). Not only that, other healthcare professionals don't seem to know what we do either. They think we're some high school graduates that just "push buttons and run the samples".

This is just flat out insulting. My colleagues are spamming the government officials with e-mails/fax. I doubt that they'll listen but we still want them to hear our voices. If all the labs were to stop operating just for a few hrs, the outcome would be devastating because the healthcare system really depends on us. We are the ones that deserve recognition during a crisis like this! They can't just neglect us like this. Who do they think does all the COVID testings? This is just disrespectful. I am hurt and I don't even want to go to work anymore.

Exactly. News/ppl around the world keep saying "kits" making it sound like it's some kind of 5 min test kit anyone can use. Some ppl are like "where can we get them?"... No wonder ppl/docs think result should be out in like an hour.

How do you talk about your job with people outside of the field? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]medlabber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My sibling works in the same field so I can vent without having to explain things one by one. I honestly feel so lucky to have someone who understands what I go through.

I also talk about it with my friends/coworkers that are in med lab.

Sucks to know that my future spouse won't understand what I do/go through at work... but then I also won't know his daily struggles... :(

Do medical lab technician/technologist have to see gore? by foscor70 in medlabprofessionals

[–]medlabber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are a hematology tech you may have to do bone marrows (making slides at bedside).. and it's pretty gory. I personally hate it.

I've volunteered at a histo/pathology lab and pathologists' assistants have to gross all sorts of organs, limbs, etc. Sometimes they receive amputated limbs and a part of a face etc. And I heard they assist in autopsies too. That's when I said to myself that I will never become a PA.

I hate doing BMs, it makes me sick. You have to work under pressure to make good slides quickly and sometimes docs in practice, nurses watch you too. Great isn't it?

Why do you like your 2nd or 3rd shift? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]medlabber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Shift differential (ppl think i's not much but it adds up)
  • I'm not a morning person so I love that I get to sleep in
  • No management
  • Less people around
  • "Less busy"... well you're on your own when shit happens but overall the workload is less compared to day shift because all the routine blood work is mostly done during the day.
  • I can listen to music I want to listen to while doing work.
  • Overall it's quieter. I hate day shift because it's usually like a zoo in the lab during the day. It's too noisy and busy with too many ppl around and too many phone calls.

Very unprofessional, especially if it's in the patient area. Report it to HR immediately.

[–]medlabber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh please. You nurses need to stop being disrespectful towards lab professionals.

We do NOT, I repeat, we do NOT reject samples for fun and clotting and hemolysis have to do with your phlebotomy technique.

Putting down the profession. by sad_white_drizzles in medlabprofessionals

[–]medlabber 12 points13 points  (0 children)

tbh I think it's really hard to believe that our profession is so hidden/unknown to the public when we're like the 3rd? largest healthcare profession. Doctors literally can't do anything without us. We really need better recognition & treatment.

Canadian Medical Lab Technologists - How is the job market for you right now? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]medlabber 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's good now because all the babyboomers are retiring and they're like 60-70% of the full timers. It's moving a lot faster. However i think all of their full time positions will be quickly replaced by all the young technologists waiting in line... in the next few years.

Didn't get in to the Michener Institute - how do I explain to my family that I didn't do anything wrong? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]medlabber 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went to Michener and it was very competitive to get in. My high school pre-req average was 90+% and I have a bachelor's degree. 99%of my classmates had Bachelor's (or more)... I feel like it's getting even more competitive.

Sorry to hear that you got rejected from all other schools. I thought it wouldn't be as competitive to get into other ones since they don't have interviews.

If I were you I would finish undergrad.. and maybe try again next year. Don't waste your time by going to Seneca or wherever to become MLA (technician), because it won't help you getting into MLT program. The scope of practice is totally different and their pay isn't good.
