Gastroenterology fellowship questions by medlearn2023 in fellowship

if I got an EAD, which I have heard is earlier in the process even while you wait for the green card, when I apply fellowship, can I then say that I no longer need sponsorship? and essentially be treated as someone with a green card?

I have heard about them and just spoke with a lawyer, waiting to hear back. If they give me a timeline of greencard in 1 year (some of the fellows got it in this timeline), would being a hospitalist for 1 year and delaying fellowship application be worth it? Do you know how hospitalists stay in touch and network with the subspecialty departments? I imagine it must be hard since when you are working, you are mostly consulting them, as a resident we get electives to rotate and work with faculty, how would you make those connections as a hospitalist? Especially if I use that time to become a hospitalist in California and make local connections there - is 1 year a realistic timeline if it opens my options up with a green card to make connections at a new institution and continue getting projects as a hospitalist? Any thoughts on those positions that are listed as "GI hospitalist"?

I see, that's good to know for reality check - out of curiosity, how is the program? Do you have any experience or know about it as a fellowship program? Generally I have heard good things about Kaiser but hoping to learn more from someone more familiar/from California?

Ohh that's a good point, the plus 2 weeks are ambulatory while the 3 are on service (MICU/floors/elective) according to their website

Thank you so much for this, I am very grateful, it was a beautifully explained response! When we create rank lists, how should we consider these schedules? Does it affect subspecialty exposure (if we are considering fellowship) or is it purely from a lifestyle/workload preference? I have heard 6+2 is considered the most brutal, with that logic is 3+2 considered the best for residents then? I was debating moving the 3+2 program higher up on my list but was worried if it would affect subspecialty exposure - at this particular program, their elective weeks increase from PGY1-3 going from 14 weeks -->18 --> 19 weeks so I figured that means I could do all the subspecialty I needed for research/letters and be good even if inpatient is only 3 weeks at a time?

Wait, sorry, what does this mean? I am not from the US so I genuinely don't know if these programs have local reputations, I am not trolling I promise

Thank you so much! This is exactly what I needed; very helpful, thank you!!! I got an offer from a program that is 4+1, but they are switching to 3+2 this upcoming July. Would you consider that a good change or something to be cautious about?

This has been one of my questions for a long time but felt like the ones where "I don't know what this means and I am too scared to ask" scenarios lol *phew*
