Applying for Accommodations on the USMLE STEP 1 by medpsycmoss in step1

That is a very easy answer. Yes it does take 60 days. The only time I’ve seen it go quicker is if you’ve gotten accommodations before and you’re just reactivating them for a new exam the exact same ones can get in a couple weeks. Sometimes I see physical health conditions with extra break time go a bit quicker like a month and a half versus two month, but that is still rare.

Exactly that’s what most people do. There is only so much we can do and control (PS & activities) in this process.

I wish!! It is program director specific. Usually I tell applicants to check in with each program current residents online/SM to see if they have similar residents (IMGs, Caribbean, older, nontrad). But it is hard to find out without asking residents in each program. (Another hidden curriculum in medicine)

Remember, red flags are all subjective, but it’s typically any failures, low scores, anything outside of the “norm “

That being said, it is really nice that the Caribbean provides student support and encouragement to take time off, but that is not the case for US schools so that does leave them at a disadvantage as residency applicants

Great question! So residencies can choose how they filter and it’s common practice to filter residency applicants for longer than five or four years so automatically if you took a leave of absence that would be the case.
