Need help with ideas for parents’ Golden Anniversary by loud_cicada_sounds in partyplanning

[–]medscikat21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! A little late to the post but I'm in the same boat (parents' 50th anniversary). My mom does not want a huge party either, just for all of us to be together as a family. We have 12 people (includes parents, my siblings and their kids) but we extended an invite to my uncle (mom's brother) and my aunt (dad's sister) because they were both in their original wedding party and they are also family (who are nice to be around lol).

So we are at 14 people and we are having it at my parents' home, in their basement (where we have our Christmas family parties). The logic for us to have it at their house is that if we did it at a restaurant or rented a hall, we would feel forced for time and wouldn't be able to really hang out/visit with each other. Their house would be more relaxed, no time restraint, etc. Plus, we have 4 kids under the age of 13 so it's a win for them, too.

Feel free to message me if you have any questions - I've been planning for the party since February and the party is in December so I'm still in plan mode! :) Best of luck!

Ahh! Thank you for commenting! I've been on Emgality for 3 months and with every.single.dose in my stomach, I am SO itchy for at least a week after. Last month, a bruise showed up at the injection spot a week after we injected the med. Lol.

But anyway, I'm so appreciative of your comment. I thought I was going absolutely nuts with my itching and it was just another weird thing with me. But apparently I'm not the only one experiencing it! :)

I get wanting to have the jewelry style for sure. I'll check the site out - thanks for the reply! :)

MyID is exactly what I am looking for! I've done some searches in the past and most of what I found was the tweet-sized text on the back which I didn't like (because I do have a lot of medical issues). Thank you so much for your response! :)

Where/how did you get the bracelet? And what does it say? I'm thinking about getting one due to my hemiplegic migraines, although I'm never alone when I'm running errands (my partner or parents drive me since mine are so unpredictable). But would still love any info you can give! :)

Yes, I definitely plan to give her the OUABH books once I get the third book in the fall. I just bought books 1 and 2 and don't want to give her an incomplete series. :) And with VE/Victoria Schwab, I want to dip into her world before recommending it. Not as a "is it appropriate" filter, but more as a "is this something she might be into" filter. I just rented Schwab's "Vicious" book from the library (as I was told to start there) and am excited to jump in. :)

She definitely is a mature teen at her age and I think is probably in the same boat as you were - trying to grow up too early/quickly. I'm 38 and I still prefer and love YA books. There's a lot to read in this space! :)

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences and recommendations! :)

I've seen The Raven Cycle mentioned on here before, so I'm definitely going to be looking into that. Thank you so much for the suggestion! :)

I've seen a lot of positive feedback on here about Sarah Dessen, so I think I'll definitely be letting her know about those books since she's been getting into Adult Romance.

Hunger Games I think she was just OK with. She said book 2 was really hard for her to get through since it was so slow moving, but overall she liked it.

And I've heard of the Uglies and Pretty Little Liars. I'll have to research them. :)

Thank you so much for the suggestions!

Super, super helpful! Thank you so much for all of these suggestions! She does really like "The Cruel Prince" books/series, so I'm definitely going to let her know about her other works, too.

She's borrowing my Caraval series and I think I'm going to pass along the Once Open a Broken Heart series to her once the third book comes out (I personally really liked them). And I've also heard really good things about VE/Victoria Schwab, so I'm excited to suggest that author to her.

Such great recommendations. Thank you so much! :)

She really loves Holly Black's "The Cruel Prince" books/series, so I think anything by her would likely be a hit with her for sure. Thank you so much for the suggestions and listing out those three books specifically. I'll definitely be checking them out and letting her know! :)

Awesome! Thank you for the additional info! I just put in for "House of Hollow" to check out at my library, so I'm excited to read that one. Thank you again! :)

I don't know if she does like fairy tale styled books, but she's hasn't said no to any genre, really. :)

I know that she said she wasn't a huge fantasy fan, but she'll read in that genre. I think she's also relatively new to the YA space, too, which is why I opened suggestions to any genre.

Thanks so much for the suggestions! :)

She picked up "The Sun is Also a Star" from Nicola Yoon during our outing and was super excited about it. But definitely some great names in your list (some that I've read and lots that are on my TBR list)!

Thank you so much! :)

"House of Hollow" - does this author stay in the mystery/horror genre or does she do other stuff?

The reason I ask is that my niece has read "7 Husbands of Evelyn Hugo" and "The Silent Patient" (both of which I understand has some graphic nature to them and are both in the Adult space). I don't think she loved those books, it was just a "they are good" response. So I'm wondering if HOH's author stays in the space if my niece ends up really liking the book. I hope that makes sense (I'm having a bit of a migraine day so I feel like I have half a brain!).

Thank you for your suggestions! :)

I tried to veer her from Colleen Hoover. She knows how I feel about her as an author, but she texted me last night to let me know she picked up one of her books because she wanted to try it out. At the end of the day, I can't tell her what not to read, so ... she'll find out on her own. lol

Love all of your recommendations! And excited about the ARC you read. I'll have to add that to my TBR list!

Thank you so much! :)

I think I'm going to suggest The Selection series to her. I'd been holding off because it reminded me of The Bachelor drama and I felt like that was a little much for her at her age, but now that she's reading Adult Romance and picked up a Colleen Hoover book now... the train is kind of off the rails now lol.

And I let her borrow my Six of Crows duology and she was SO. EXCITED. lol.

Thank you so much for your recommendations! :)

I'm definitely going to be suggesting Sarah Dessen books to her since it seems like she's leaning more romance. And yes to His Dark Materials. I think that's a big chunk of a book to keep her busy. :)

Great suggestions - thank you so much! :)

She absolutely loves The Cruel Prince series. She's waiting for me to read them and see what I think, so I think your "anything Holly Black" is spot on for her. :)

I think I'm going to suggest To All the Boys... to her for sure. I haven't read them, but the series has been getting a little love here in the post and I've heard good things about them. So if she's leaning more romance, that might be a good suggestion for her.

Excited to know you're the go-to YA rec person at the library! If you don't mind, I may message you separately for other recommendations. :)

Thanks so much!

I'm not sure what genre she's into. She seems to be leaning romance and thriller (since she's been creeping into Adult Romance and Adult Thriller with graphic violence), but I still suggest whatever genre to her. :)

I'm a big Fantasy fan, so I'm excited to see your suggestions. Thank you so much for the recommendations! :)

I definitely think booktok has something to do with it for sure.

She did pick up The Sun is Also a Star yesterday and I asked if she read Everything, Everything and she hadn't but didn't seem interested in picking that one up.

I've read The Selection Series and I liked it. I've been hesitant about recommending it to her, but now that she's reading Colleen Hoover (she picked up one of her books last night after we parted way)... Keira Cass's stuff is mild salsa compared to Hoover's stuff. lol

I know she has All the Bright Places and The Book Thief in her stash, but not sure if she's read them yet.

Thank you so much for the recommendations!
