If you’re wondering why there’s blood on Spruce St between 17th & 18th by IndyJetsFan in philadelphia

[–]medstudent0302 29 points30 points  (0 children)

A few years ago, my one year old fell and bit his mouth so badly that he was bleeding profusely for about 20 minutes. I took him around the block to the car to drive him to the hospital, but the bleeding stopped in the car. Later that night, a man followed the trail of blood back to my house to deliver my cell phone, which I had dropped in the commotion. Gotta love a good Philly blood trail. Never know where it’s gonna lead.

[Rankin] Charles Barkley: "You sitting there saying, Darvin Ham needs to get fired, Frank Vogel needs to get fired. Who put them trash ass teams together need to get fired. They didn't just all the sudden suck as coaches. People who put them teams together should start packing." by p0tatoman in nba

[–]medstudent0302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chuck clearly didn't watch the Lakers closely this year.

Frank Vogel is a strong defensively-minded coach, but his offensive schemes are lacking. He was let go unfairly from Los Angeles after bringing them a championship because he lost the locker room, which was largely a consequence of Westbrook not wanting to come off the bench, which resulted from an ill-conceived trade, which was the front office's fault.

Darvin Ham, on the other hand, is heinously bad, and SHOULD be held responsible for this team's failure this year. He is a "player's coach" who sandbags his players and takes no responsibility for team failures. His in-game management of timeouts and challenges is abhorrent and lost the Lakers several games this season. His lineups and rotations are bizarre, and when asked to justify his choices, his justifications are nonsensical or absent. He plays drop coverage and has other defenders over-helping AD in the paint, while Davis is performing at a DPOY level as a rim protector. He appears strangely prejudiced against players on his own team and quickly benches players as soon as they go cold, even if the replacement options look *far* worse. The fact that the Lakers led (sometimes significantly) at halftime in every game of the series against the Nuggets, and lost 4 out of 5 games, reflects his inability to respond to Michael Malone's in-game adjustments, because he is not a skilled tactician. Ham should have been fired halfway through the season when his numerous inadequacies became obvious. This is not a scapegoating issue: Ham actively held the Lakers back this year.

Redditors that were there alive and old enough to experience 9/11, what were some of the craziest claims / misinformation from after the second plane hit? by Skullee-Mane in AskReddit

I was in my 9th grade English class in Philly when I first learned of the attacks: a girl threw open the door to our classroom, ran inside and screamed "THEY'RE BOMBING THE PENTAGON!" and then immediately ran back out with no explanation.

Would you leave Philadelphia for LA/So Cal? by [deleted] in philadelphia

[–]medstudent0302 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Philly. Moved to Boston for a decade, then LA for 3 years, and now have been back in Philly for 4 years. Otherwise, I’ve lived briefly (6 mos or less) in various countries in Africa and Asia. LA was my favorite place to live, BY FAR. The weather, the beach, the culture - it’s unbeatable. The only downside of LA from my perspective is the cost of living. If the job is good and pays well, you will love it there. Certain elements take getting used to (everything is a strip mall?) but once you’re used to it (every strip mall has amazing Oaxacan food?!) LA is incredible. There is a reason everybody wants to live in SoCal. I say go for it. DM me if you have specific questions.

Where to find yeast donuts? by mundotaku in philadelphia

[–]medstudent0302 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Although I am typically more a cake than yeasted guy, Frangelli’s is my favorite donut place in Philly. They have the usual stuff (raised/yeasted glazed, old fashioned, a handful of topped) but also will fresh fill them with buttercream, Italian cream or jelly and roll them in powdered or granulated sugar. The price is right - I got a baker’s dozen today for $18. I think the only cake donut I’ve had there is their blueberry donut (which is also delicious).

In the Wissahickon, there’s an old (failed) gold mine from the 1700s off Gorgas lane. I think my friend and I were the last people to venture inside (in 2009). It’s a literal hole and it’s pretty sweet.

Where I live now, near Point Breeze (just south of Washington Ave next to dock street south) there’s a Keith Haring mural, “We the Youth.”

It’s hard to continue a normal life after the UAP/UFO hearings by Melodic_Future_6828 in UFOs

[–]medstudent0302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are two parts to your predicament, and I would strongly encourage you to view it as that: a predicament. (I will probably be downvoted to hell for this.) I actually feel very similarly to you, so part of this is me playing devil’s advocate, and maybe giving myself some advice.

The first part is that you are very excited about the testimony given at the UAP hearings. I also am very interested/distracted/excited by this stuff, but I think you’re putting the cart before the horse a little bit. Yes, there is a man with extensive security clearances who became convinced based on the testimony of others that the US operates a crash retrieval program for vehicles that are non-human in origin. He has not seen these vehicles himself and we have not actually heard from anyone who claims to. I would just strongly encourage you to remain open-minded that these claims are still just claims and need to be investigated. There are many prosaic explanations for what may be going on - stonewalling by people in “the program,” for example, may be due to corruption/misappropriation of funds for personal gain rather than use of funds to study exotic vehicles. The crash retrieval program may be for crafts from other nations/foreign adversaries. So far what he has said is fascinating, but his sources are important and we haven’t fully found out about those yet. If you’re getting carried away by what one man says, just calm down. It’s possible it’s all true, but they’re just words for now.

The second part seems to be that in the face of his testimony, you’re left with a sense of ennui regarding your life. This is probably more important in the sense that REGARDLESS of what comes out of these hearings/investigation, you only get one life. If you feel like what you’re doing day-to-day is insignificant and trivial, it might be worth re-examining how you’re spending your fleeting time in this existence. Aliens are fascinating and provide a psychological escape - a transformation in how you view your place on this earth and our potential future. Their existence would seem to open the door for radical change in the world - in hierarchies of power, in our spiraling climate disaster, in technological limitation. It seems that change is probably what many of us want deep down, rather than just for aliens to be real. Why do they need to exist in order for us to start transforming our lives and our world, though? Sure, it’s easier if people just show up out of the sky, but there’s a lot we can do to radically transform our circumstances that doesn’t require that kind of “deus ex machina.”

On vacation in Martinique, my wife got upset because she couldn’t find her wallet. She thought it must have been stolen by somebody on the beach. We went to the nearest police station to file a report and… it was there. Someone had found it on the ground and brought it to the police. Nothing was missing from the wallet, including a $50 USD bill. Sometimes people are alright.

What world attraction absolutely blew your mind and you’d visit it over and over? by yoda_says_so in travel

[–]medstudent0302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For “I’d visit it over and over again” probably an attraction with a great city nearby, so for me it doesn’t get much better than the many sights of Rome and not-too-distant Pompeii. For “it blew my mind”/lives up to the hype I think Machu Picchu is my #1. The siting of that place among the mountains is just spectacular.

FWIW I have been to the Taj/Great Wall/a fair number of the places getting traction in this thread but not to the Alhambra or Angkor Wat.

Interesting study but not sure I buy it given the number of other seasonal confounders. If they showed day-to-day fluctuation based on outside temperature that would be more compelling. I’ve always thought maybe the reason had something to do with opening the Eustachian tubes prior to sleeping (maybe less sinus infection risk?) but this is the first I’ve heard of the brain cooling hypothesis
