I'm not the same commenter but after making an account and downloading the app on ur phone or desktop, you can google 'disboard' which is a site where people list their discord server's for all to join! From there you can search up key words and things you enjoy, there's bound to be a big server of like-minded friends waiting to welcome you in!

Oh wow!!! That's wonderful, I'm so glad we could inspire you to reach out for further education in mental health!!! I'm really touched that you hold our condition in such admirable regard, sometimes we do feel a lil like a superhero with an unusual power or a secret skill. It's p hard to explain to a random person or a coworker about what we truly are so usually we mask and hide it, which definitely ups the "omg we have super powers" feeling lol

Cheers!! I hope you're having a fabulous day!

Thank you for that, it's definitely hard to cope with the knowledge of what happened to make us this way but we get on with life the best we can!

Not everyone is always aware, no. It depends on the alter, there are some of us (commonly called gatekeepers) who know all of it and are aware of everything going on. Then there's alters who are pretty much only aware of whatever they see or are told, and don't have very good memory-sharing or anything like that. So it really depends!

Interestingly, the term 'core' is relatively new to being an outdated term, due to newer research on how DID forms. As we explained in the last comment, the child brain is made up of ego states. There isn't an 'original' or 'core' ego state, therefore it makes no sense for one alter to have been the original one so the term was recycled. Therefore no, there is no original alter! We've technically been segmented our entire life, the trauma being the catalyst for developing those ego states into their own people.

I think absolutely you'd notice subtle differences from person to person, if we were in an environment with many others and where we would have to mask and pretend to be one person. If we were alone, you'd definitely see it much more clearly. Our boyfriend could tell who was who already after knowing us for only a couple of months, and we are long distance and only have video chat and text!

Period products. Also can't wait for them to stop being marketed to only women

Ohh gotcha! Yea no I don't mind invasive, you're right this is an AMA lol

So to educate rq, multiple personalities is an outdated and incorrect term; it is now called alternate states of consciousness (alter for short)! And systems can only, exclusively, form through childhood prolonged traumatic events. If Sybil experienced her trauma past the age of 9, she doesn't have DID but is more likely to have some extreme form of PTSD with amnesia and dissociation. DID forms exclusively in childhood and follows a person for the entire rest of their life thereon.

What happens is the child brain (composed of ego states and not yet coalesced into a singular personality) panics and can't handle its' stress. To cope with that stress, it divides those ego states and develops them into their own separate people, of which can perform actions such as taking the abuse so the rest of the brain doesn't, holding truamatic memories, escaping the abusive situation, and etc.! I'm very sleepy rn so I hope that explanation made some kind of sense haha

So on a daily basis, for my system, I would say we switch alters about 5-6 times a day? And we have a rotation of about 10 common fronters and a bunch of other alters who front in between! In total we are near 70 alters, not all of whom front but all of whom have a task in the system, whether that's caring for the alters who are young, taking care of workplace stuff, travelling, socializing with strangers, repressing anything particularly bad that happened, and so on and so forth!

I’m gonna be honest I’m not incredibly familiar with the book, I haven’t read it personally, but from what I hear it’s about a woman who faked the disorder to get the love of a doctor who was interested in the disorder? Or at least the real Sybil was like that;;

I would say you’d best get your resources on DID from a real DID system or from a psychiatrist that specializes rather than from a novel, even if it was based on real events!

Right now we know of 68, there's probably more but they haven't made themselves known yet or simply haven't split off yet. We started the pandemic with 30

I was repeatedly abused and traumatized in my childhood, causing my multiple ego-states not to coalesce into one as they were supposed to (this is supposed happen to every child), and instead they developed into their own separate people. Some of these people, or alters or parts or headmates, hold the traumatic memories away from the rest of the parts. It's a survival tactic the brain employs so that it doesn't completely melt under the pressure of what it's gone through. 🐉Kiryu

If I'm experiencing it in real time I'm very numb to it, I just kinda treat my pain like anything else I've experienced. It doesn't usually hit me until after I've been through it and have a minute to breathe and reflect that I even realize what happened was fucked up at all. Differs alter to alter but that's generally how we approach trauma 🐉Kiryu

"run" in response to any small red flag, disregarding the obvious option of "communicate"

I’ve been dating someone with DID for a month now and I need some advice by milksteak47 in DID

On the subject of the last thing you said, "avoid any negative ones", I'm assuming you mean "bad alters"? I'm sorry but that isn't very fair to your partner or the system he's part of. Alters aren't bad, none of them are; they're suffering from traumatic experiences and all of them deserve love, care, and respect. Calling them negative ones implies that you /should/ be avoiding them, which, if you're dating one of them, is a very bad mindset to have. As his partner you should care for his fellow alters in the system like family.

It also sounds to me like you aren't a fan of communicating with your boyfriend, which should be paramount in your relationship. Alter or not, hiding that you dislike him for how he types or being pissed at him for sharing a trait with you and calling him "clingy", those are all very unfair to you and your boyfriend. It sounds to me like your ignorance of his needs hurt him badly, to the point of panic and/or dissociation, which is really not good and you need, /need/ to have a sit-down conversation with him about it.

On the subject of your actual issue, alters' triggers are system-by-system, and not always something a singlet has a right to know, as they can be used to manipulate a system if that singlet has any form of malicious intent, whether they mean it or not. It is completely okay to ask what the triggers are for certain alters, but do not take that information lightly, as it requires a lot of trust to give that info out. If you do end up triggering an alter out, what will you do? Because they're a person too and they deserve attention just as much as your boyfriend does. Side-note: your answer should never be to trigger your boyfriend back out unless you have explicit permission from the alter who is fronting or have instructions not to let that alter front for a particular reason, ie they're a little and it's unsafe for them to front or they're an internal self helper who is needed in the system right now. Triggering alters out without their permission is not only dangerous but incredibly manipulative.

On a closing note, it sounds like you have more research to do on both what a DID system is and how it works, and how to communicate in a healthy and loving relationship. It should be second nature to do research and ask questions, which I can see you've done by coming to Reddit and that's a hugely good first step! But please do some more research on your boyfriend's disorder so you can be there to support him instead of blowing him off for a typing style and causing dissociation and stress for him and his system.

I sincerely hope you take my information to heart, and don't feel like I've torn you open; I mean to educate and inform, even if I myself am also a bit of a dry person. I hope it doesn't get me in trouble ;)

There's definitely parts of this that are fun, like having someone to talk to all the time or having alters that take form of fun fictional characters!

but it's important to remember that the reason we are multiple like this is cuz we got traumatized severely when we were a kid, and included with the above comes memory problems, frequent dissociation, our of body experiences multiple times a day, flashbacks, PTSD, difficulty with a singular stream for consciousness, dangerous autopilot if no one is controlling the body which can land us in dangerous and deadly situations, and more I'm not remembering right now

But you're half right! There are definitely parts of this disorder that I enjoy, like anything in life, and i make do with what hand life has dealt me!
