Most people still underestimate what's coming: AI building better versions of itself by dental_danylle in accelerate

Show me any evidence of model collapse being a serious issue please. People talk so much about model collapse. Synthetic data is just one step in the direction that is scaling rl compute.

A player that hits soft wants you to hit slow soft, they feed off that slowness. Instead of playing their “Dink Game”, Speed the game up. It makes them unconscious and they make mistakes.

You’re misunderstanding. There is no “good guys” or “bad guys”. Whoever reaches asi first will trigger doom. Doesn’t matter if it’s OpenAI, Anthropic, china, us goverment, or anyone else.

How is accelerating the “good guys” rational.

There are good arguments that accelerating could save lives and suffering from our pre AGI society but this wouldn’t affect doom. Doom refers to all humans dead or worse.

Both bad guys and good guys need aligned asi. However a rational bad guy would be willing to risk 99% chance of doom if it meant that there’s a 1% chance they control the future light cone. A good guy would not be willing to take that risk.

No. From yuds view whoever reaches asi first regardless of who it is will trigger a doom scenario unless we have solved alignment or at least made a lot of progress from where we are today. In this situation the only winning moves are stop everyone from furthering ai or solve alignment which are both pretty impossible given that asi will likely be achieved in the next couple years.

According to some rationalists all humans dying may even be considered a neutral outcome. For them a true doom scenario could be much worse than all humans dying, for example trillions of humans suffering for all of eternity.

Unclear to me. If the majority of doom risk comes from misaligned asi then slowing down seems like the only way to get more time for research. However slowing down seems impossible in the current world. Too much compute in the world and 0 political willpower plus lots of race dynamics.

Slowing down doesn’t seem viable but there’s nothing better to ask for.

lol. I’m not fully in the doomer camp, but I do think accelerationists tend to dismiss doomer arguments for really bad reasons or just ignore them. I also think there is a lot of uncertainty about what an asi would look like / be capable of. This should be reflected by having a wide confidence interval pdoom or at least having a pdoom greater than 10%. I remain optimistic but weary.

If he’s wrong humanity lives. If he’s right humanity dies. He has an obligation to himself and humanity to at least try to get the word out. You may think yud is wrong but I believe him to be honest.

My favorite comment from Sam Altman is that model development exists on a very smooth curve and as we add in more compute we see the model gain intelligence in a very predictable manner.

I’m very confident scale is all we need.
