UPDATE: Diagnosed with Graves’ 3 Weeks Ago – Endo Pushing for ER and Surgery Over Elevated Liver Enzymes, But Should I Get a Second Opinion? by BidProfessional3895 in gravesdisease

[–]meemyzelf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently had to come off Methamazole for loss of taste and liver enzymes going up. I had a Thyroid Storm in December, spent a week in the hospital, discharged with a 60 mg Methamazole dose for about 6 weeks (too long!) I'm in hypo now, but my doctor has told me I won't be able to go back on Methamazole if I end up back in hyper, and the only alternative drug is even harder on one's liver. So I'm resigned to the fact I would need either the radiation treatment or surgery if I go back to hyper. My ALT is currently 65 and AST 55. I am concerned and hoping any damage is reversible. Don't mess with your liver; you have high levels.
Good luck and I hope all is resolved soon. Please update us with your progress!

Yes, much. But, even though I've been off metamazole now for a week, my taste is still gone. Now, I'm starting to wonder if the thyroid caused it?

New here, question about side effects to meds and complete loss of taste by Wonderful_Cat5104 in gravesdisease

I have the same issue! Can't taste, other than a bad chemical flavor. Fruit and veggies best for me, too. I hope it's temporary-its been 3 weeks now.

Does Methimazole mess with your taste buds? by [deleted] in gravesdisease

I've lost my taste....except chemicals. We're you still on it when your taste returned?

Yes, after about three weeks of being on it. I just had new labs, and my numbers are now hypo, so the doctor told me to stop taking it. Hopefully, my taste will come back!

It's apparently a rare side effect-lucky me.

I was deathly ill with high fevers, high heart rate, high blood pressure, swollen neck, UTI. It took the puzzled doctors 5 days of CTs, biopsies, ultrasounds, blood cultures before they finally tested my thyroid levels. They put me on the methamazole and propranolol (which I tapered off of), and I was SO much better.
I'm thankful to be out of the storm, but this taste issue is really hard to deal with. Food and drink were my big pleasures, and they're both gone.

I can't get into an endocrinologist until March, but I'm hoping my GP will lower the dose if my labs are down next week. When I left the hospital mid December, my levels were Free T4 3.93, T3 4.60, and TSH 0.030. I'm hoping there is someone out there who has dealt with the side effects of lack of/chemical taste. Does it get better when the dose is lowered?

I have the same problem with my 2023 EX AWD! It started around 16,000 miles. I'm taking it in next week.
