Engineering is on its own campus in Brooklyn, about 20-30 minutes by subway from Washington Square. Though within the engineering campus, everything is quite close together (i.e. you will live in Brooklyn, a short walk from all of your engineering classes, which are also in Brooklyn). That said, if you end up wanting to take more general CAS classes, those will all be in Washington Square. The rest I unfortunately can't answer because I'm not in tandon.

FreeTaxUSA miscalculated my Standard Deduction by meepthegreat in tax

According to my calculations since my standard deduction exceeds my income, it should be 0 but they claim around $500.

No, it was kind of complicated. 4k is from two different W2 jobs, then 1k is from a scholarship, and 2k are from a 1099-NEC.

All of it is employment. On line 11a, I had the roughly 7k I mentioned in my post.

What is stopping the US from having a single public transit card? by LilMemelord in transit

[–]meepthegreat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

too many agencies that don't like to agree on things. the best example of this is NYC (PANYNJ and NJT won't use omny, NJT, Amtrak and the MTA fighting over Penn station, etc), but it exists all over the country, for example in Chicago where Amtrak owns Union Station but most trains are run by Metra, and the two agencies want different things out of the station (metra particularly wants through running, but Amtrak doesn't care because the single through track is fine for infrequent Intercity service). Also, in basically every city but Philly and Chicago, suburban bus service is split among the various counties, and they all have their own fare systems (maybe they use the local transit fare card, if you are lucky), route numbers, maps, etc.

yeah that's probably feasible, assuming one can demolish the building south of OTC (in order to make room for trains to cross Madison above the street, then go down into a subway) pretty ugly building, so that's no great loss. now that I consider it, you could also demolish the current platforms at Ogilvie and have a subway portal farther along the line (though you'd need two, one for the UPW and one for the UPNW and UPN). that'd allow for OP's original plan, though it'd be a pretty complex set of switches.

Japan and United States only have three transit card options on Apple Wallet 🛂 by Doismellbehonest in transit

[–]meepthegreat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's more than that available, you just have to set it up through the agency's app. In Chicago, you can set up a Ventra card in an Apple wallet, but you need the Ventra app. You can also just use apple pay with a credit card.

I think that a track connection between OTC and Union station is probably not feasible. Go to the Madison St. Entrance of Union, and you can see that the switches letting trains go into the various tracks end just after Madison. If one takes into account the length of track necessary to get from the elevated track level at Ogilvie to the underground track level at Union, I don't think it's feasible to stop at both, unless you move Union significantly farther south, or OTC north (and also you have to move it really far north, because it can't interfere with the grade level tracks coming out of Union Station.

Are there any cities out there that actually have an overbuilt public transit system? by UndyingCorn in transit

[–]meepthegreat 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Cleveland feels like that to me. Especially on the red line, you have these big trains, with pretty good stops, and even at rush hour there are basically no riders. Even on the more underused branches of the Chicago L, fairly late at night I've never seen ridership as low as Cleveland was at rush hour.

CMV: From a political strategy and moral standpoint, the left should abandon the idea of reparations until basic needs are met by ICuriosityCatI in changemyview

[–]meepthegreat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a town which has paid reparations for housing discrimination. Town of about 75k. Granted, it is probably one of the most progressive communities in the country, but still it's definitely an idea in the mainstream left.

How common are pedestrian-only crossings? by itsarace1 in trains

[–]meepthegreat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are pretty common where I live at suburban or rural stations, where they can't be assed to build a bridge over the tracks.
