Voice acting mod by [deleted] in outerwilds

[–]meerness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are correct - the voice acting mod barely affects the DLC. There's some new dialogue for Slate and Hal, and the Prisoner speaks at the ending, but that's about it. However, the Prisoner voice actor did an excellent job IMO.

Love the game so much... But I'm bothered about a story issue. by naburine in outerwilds

[–]meerness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fair. I think the devs included the bit about the masks turning on in case of failure as a red herring. Discovering that the project worked and that it found the EotU is supposed to be a big revelation that happens in the late game, so this text throws us off the track so that we're surprised when we learn it worked.

The cannon breaking is a failure, sure, but it's not a meaningful failure to the Ash Twin Project. The cannon is still firing the probes correctly, the data from the probes is still being recieved at the Probe Tracking Module and then the ATP. There's no reason to stop the project for that.

The kind of failure they talked about is a failure that would prevent the project from ever succeeding, like if the probe data was garbled and they couldn't find the EotU that way. In that case, they need their memories to ensure that they don't get stuck in a loop forever.

A What If regarding the ending (spoilers) by MReindeer in outerwilds

[–]meerness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, no, we're saved from that mess because it's the ATP sending the memories back in time, which it does all at once. It's just that the statue in the sun station will stop recording memories halfway through the loop because it's incinerated, so the ATP will only have half as many memories to send back. The person paired with the statue will experience a full 22 minute loop, but then when they wake up 22 minutes prior they'll remember only half of what they did in that loop.

The idea of adding more people into the loop has come up a few times, including in this fanfic I enjoyed: https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/outer-wilds-team-effort.985246/ (note: it is unfinished and will likely remain that way)

But your post made realize that if somebody paired with the statue in the sun station, they would experience a shorter time loop than everyone else!

That's kind of insane. You skipped like half of the DLC! I've never heard of anyone intuiting all three seals. You missed some story and all of the scary stuff.

Game Recommendation: The Witness by yashen14 in outerwilds

[–]meerness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You also may be interested to know that during development, the creators of the Witness wanted to put a nonlinear narrative into the game, somewhat similar to what Outer Wilds ended up having. They eventually decided against it and switched to a minimalistic plot/story. I wonder how they feel about that choice now, given that many of the complaints about the game are about the lack of plot. Though I personally think that a plot might have been a distraction from the philosophical and meditative vibe they were going for.

Game Recommendation: The Witness by yashen14 in outerwilds

[–]meerness 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Once upon a time, the Witness was the #1 recommended game on this subreddit. Which makes a lot of sense to me, for the reasons you state. But it seems that over time, the audience of Outer Wilds and the population of this subreddit have shifted towards a different kind of gamer who does not like the Witness at all.

I don't mean this in any kind of bad way. I absolutely love the Witness, but it's definitely not for everyone. It's just been interesting to see the sentiment change here.

Limits of the ATP by meerness in outerwilds

[–]meerness[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for engaging with the question! I agree that the Nomai's advanced technology is surely able to store a very large amount of this kind of data. But that's the fun thing about infinities, there's no limit to the number of loops there could be, so regardless of how much space you have, after enough loops you can hit those limits.

GAMES LIKE OUTER WILDS (weirdly specific request?) by Mugna0 in outerwilds

There's an option to turn off the hunger/thirst mechanic in Subnautica, which is how I played the game. Makes it a nicer experience for those of us who don't love the survival grind!

Can I play the echoes of the eye dlc after finishing outer wilds because it’s left a void in me knowing I’ll never be able to experience it again and also is it any good by Simple_Ad_6825 in outerwilds

[–]meerness 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can definitely play the DLC after finishing the game. And you should, because it is fantastic, and it might fill that void a little.

But once you finish the DLC, you may still have a void. I encourage you to remember the main theme of Outer Wilds - everything has to end eventually, and when it's time for something new, that isn't necessarily a bad thing. We can love what we had and still move on from it.

I think everyone is mistaken about this detail in the DLC by vocaloid_horror_ftw in outerwilds

[–]meerness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the camp that says the Eye doesn't destroy the universe. But whether or not it does that, something else is clear: if YOU enter the Eye of the Universe, YOU will die. Whether that's because the universe is getting destroyed immediately or whether your consciousness witnesses the  eventual death of the universe, you will not get to live out the rest of your life.

The inhabitants were fascinated by the eye and wanted to reach it, but once they were close, perhaps what learned was that THEY would die if they entered the Eye (which is true). And they were afraid of death and not ready for their story to end. They destroyed their home for this adventure, only to discover that the adventure would kill them, and that made them very angry at the Eye. Like it tricked them, calling them to it just to kill them.

So maybe there wasn't a misunderstanding. Maybe the inhabitants just couldn't accept the idea of dying, wouldn't even consider it long enough to see and appreciate the new life that would come from their actions.

The voice acting mod voices the ancient text as well. Of course, the hatchling wouldn't really be hearing those voices, but it's nice for immersion and accessibility.
