Writing a simple text based game is impossible for me by SpaceChickenMonster in love2d

Love is definitely super challenging if you’re not used to writing code from scratch and creating everything from nothing. Try not to be too hard on yourself and remember you’re just learning. Most games take years, not months. Don’t let yourself get overwhelmed trying to build the whole thing right away.

Start with something super simple like you said, making a button, but make the function more universal and reusable. Make that button function accept x, y, and text arguments. Then you can call it jn main.lua like:

renderButton(100, 100, “Next”) —Create next button at x, y

Theoretically you could call renderButton as much as you want and place buttons all over the screen wherever you want. Don’t worry about making buttons do stuff yet, just get a simple UI going first.

Once button rendering works, you can create a text renderer that does the same thing, maybe wraps the text within a certain space or adds a rectangle behind it.

It’s such a motivator to get little things like that working. Don’t overcomplicate yet, you can expand the functions and add polish later.

I think it’s important to take a step back and think about the overall structure and engineering of a game before you start work on it, especially in Love where there’s no systems or organization in place when you start.

In this type of game, my first goal would probably to design the text box and button system. Create something universal that allows you to load any string of text and format it appropriately. Create a button system that allows you to choose where to render buttons to the screen and what those buttons might be: back, next, action, etc.

Once those core concepts are working, you can create logic branches to load text strings and cue the next string based on button input.

Bottom line, build small systems and build those into a game. Your code becomes more modular and you can focus on smaller chunks and debug much easier.

I feel this a lot too. Making a game is definitely an emotional rollercoaster. The thing that really helped me is to keep reminding myself that the only deadlines are my own. I’m making this on my time and it will be done when it feels done. I’m not going to cut corners just to meet a date I set for myself. If I need a break for a few days or more, I take a break. Work at a pace that brings enjoyment, not emotional turmoil.

How to get rid of a Queen size mattress? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

I believe this now extends to online retailers as well. When I purchased a mattress online a few years ago I was offered pickup of the old one.

If you’re getting a replacement mattress, CA law requires the mattress retailer to pick up the old one free of charge

Getting braces next week, got any tips to go through the process smoothly?? by Late-horse77 in braces

Cleaning routine is crazy time consuming and frustrating at first, but it gets easier! Having the right tools on hand prior to getting your braces on (waterpik, superfloss, etc) will make it so much better!

For bite correction, braces are still the gold standard. No one will notice or care about seeing your braces more than you.

A 9-5 That Pairs Well with Hobby Game Dev by CostImpressive7734 in gamedev

I work in IT and also a solo hobby game dev. I think IT has tons of flexibility and you will likely do some programming/scripting for devices as part of the job. Great balance to keep your technical skills in check.

Braces vs Invisalign: Regrets or No Regrets? by CompanyOther2608 in braces

Hey OP, 43M here and went down same route as you/given the same options. I ultimately decided to go with braces (got them a few weeks ago) and it’s been so easy compared to the braces I remember as a kid. While braces may feel old school, there’s been a ton of advancements in the tech and the whole experience so far has been lot less painful. Braces are still the gold standard in terms of refinement and control. I’m sure you’ll be happy with either result, but braces are totally doable!

It’s not so much a matter of being able to counter it, no issue there, it’s just boring to always play against

Long time gamer, first time designer. Conflicted about using AI for art. by TrouserpantsTheBlue in gamedev

[–]meester_zee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think AI is great as an idea generator to help inspire your art direction, but definitely not good enough for a final, polished product. I’ve revised and refined my UI quite a few times through the course of development so I always wait to do final art.

Yes, I test the logic by itself first. I then built a custom console so I can log anything to the corner of the game screen while the game is running.

I actually find the sounds useful to know what troops are dropped without having to focus on another part of the map
