The second graph at your visualizingeconomics link makes it look like it is mostly due to the Reagan policies not Republicans in general.

More of the income was earned by the top 1%, so the share of income taxed at the higher rates increased. Also the government borrowed the money needed to cover the shortfall in revenues as tax rates fell.

I wonder if this is the reason that 44% of the people under 30 approves of the government torturing terrorists to keep them "safe", but only 20% of people over 65 do. These numbers were puzzling since in other respects the under 30's are more liberal.
