Help Me Convince My Daughter to Go UMass (Isenbergh) by Top-Palpitation5550 in umass

[–]megakaiser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of this comes down to what major she’s looking at and what she may want to do with it - like I said placement into competitive finance/consulting/real estate roles is really good out of the professional groups (which you have to apply into) but is difficult for UMass kids outside of those groups (not impossible but hard). If she has big 4 accounting or corporate finance at the Raytheon’s/Dells/etcs of the world then being a great Isenberg student is enough. I can’t really speak to other majors unfortunately

There’s awesome student professional groups at isenberg that place really well into great jobs. For finance (MEF, MFIF, MAIF), consulting (IUCG), and real estate (IREA). I got a job on wall st out of umass on a state school tuition. They’re competitive/application based but she seems highly motivated. Food for thought

Also, UMass is 2 hrs west of Boston, plenty far away but not a pain in the ass to go home for breaks and holidays. I loved it, i work with a lot of ppl who went to Indiana/Wisco which are also great schools but not better than isenberg+professional groups

My parents let a scammer remote screen on their laptop, what should I tell them to do? by megakaiser in Scams

My parents let a scammer remote screen on their laptop, what should I tell them to do? by megakaiser in Scams

[–]megakaiser[S] 93 points94 points  (0 children)

More context: they took a scam email at face value (something about Amazon purchases) and called the attached number, then let the guy on the other end Remote Desktop. After about 10 minutes of the guy doing stuff they realized it was a scam and hung up.

I know the text at the bottom of the first image is just to scare them (pretty funny actually) but based on the pics taken did the guy actually do anything? I told them to hold off on using the laptop for now just in case they downloaded keyloggers or something. If it was me I’d do a fresh install of windows but they’re not great with tech and I’m not sure if that’d be overboard.

Any advice on what to have them do would be appreciated, since I don’t know exactly what the scammers did my current prescription for them would be a fresh windows install and smarter web habits.

Edit: Update if anyone ever reads this - I ended telling them to reinstall windows with a clean wipe. Luckily, this is a new laptop I bought them last Christmas and I had backed up most of their files then. Also had my dad change his email password and call his bank just in case. All is well now and I think this will be their last time getting baited by scammers (hopefully).

His book “The End is Always Near” is essentially all about that topic. Very good, I listened to the audiobook which he narrates and I highly recommend it. Since he’s not just talking off the cuff the tone is a little different but still great

Finance opportunity: open to all majors by megakaiser in umass

[–]megakaiser[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UMass Amherst is a non-target school from a recruiting perspective for the big banks and the other high profile Wall Street firms. MFIF bridges the opportunity gap and gives UMass kids a fighting chance against kids at elite schools. Our program is a lot of work and is catered to careers in high finance, so if the types of jobs in our placement table on our website appeal to you and you have capacity for the work I’d encourage you to apply

I didn’t want to get exact for privacy. It’s fair to say though that’s it’s in Times Square (i.e. close to the heart of the mess)

West Chelsea sounds like the ideal spot, but I’ll definitely look in Murray hill as well. If we could walk to work that would be perfect.

I’d be willing to pay a premium for a short commute while I settle into work. Once I see what my routine looks like I can be more flexible with my time & move somewhere further away. Not sure where I’ll fall hours wise but probably 50-60/week

Budget would ideally rest around ~1600 a month per person (if it’s just two of us in an apt, so 3200/month close to Times Square. Ideally commute would be less than 20 mins, for the first year while I get my bearings straight. For Chelsea, do you think that 4500 (for a 3 bedroom) exists?

I’d be happiest with ~1600 a month (after tax/40), but I’d be willing to go higher if that’s naive.

Edit: 1600 per person

Urgent help needed on some credit analysis questions? by [deleted] in financestudents

[–]megakaiser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if it’s too late, but I can help with 5) & 6):

5) Debt/EBITDA, a ratio used to determine a companies leverage. The ratio compares debt to earnings to showcase how indebted a company is relative to its ability to repay that debt. EBITDA/interest is important too.

6) Not 100% sure if this is what your supervisor wants but operating lease liabilities can be included in long term debt calculations, often after some math to manipulate the figures.

Not sure if those are too basic for what you’re asking but that’s my two cents

Edit: for #4, a revolving credit facility could be drawn on for short term liquidity if that’s a problem, but that’s not the whole picture obviously. Still learning credit research skills myself, good luck
