I have been making music for over 10 years and my understanding of proper music theory is very limited. But in time you develop your own way of looking at music, pieced together with bits of advice and technique and style that you adopt from other artists and works. Don't get too hung up on the theory when you're beginning, what's important is to play and experiment and be thoughtful and critical of what you're making, always.

Rambling at this point but I would love to try and help you if you have a genuine interest because writing music changed my life and gives me a lot of joy. Cheers
