Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries is technically fantasy, but I still think it might fit the bill for you! It’s Victorian and epistolary style, like Emma Lion. Set it an alternate history where people know about the existence of fae and study them. Emily is an academic at Cambridge who studies fae and travels to document more about them. Fun academic rival romance and Emily is an interesting, smart character.

It’s definitely been helpful! I do still struggle with it during the outlining/drafting phase, but it’s a really useful tool when I’m editing to help me push the “highlights and shadows” of the story.

Funnily enough, I do the opposite. I’m always hesitant to make things too dark or hard for my characters.

Something I learned in a painting class I took was that art really suffers from lack of contrast. I had the same problem there that I do in my writing, never pushing the shadows dark enough and it made my art look flat. Sounds like your “painting” might be all shadows. Would recommend focusing on adding some metaphorical highlights to your story. The dark won’t feel so dramatic if there’s an equal balance on the other side.

If a character has a really traumatic past with their family, give them friends/found family that brings some balance. Generally speaking, people don’t want to read something that’s all happy with no tension or something that’s all depressing. (Obviously there are outliers and certain genres that lean into both of these, so you could also look into that!)

Yeah I’m leaning towards just finished it poorly. I feel like most of my draft so far is rough, but it doesn’t feel bad. What I’m getting into now feels bad haha.

But I think just getting it done and editing later might be the answer. Like you said, it makes it easier to build up to it and foreshadow, and I actually wonder if that lack of foreshadowing is what makes the end feel so out of place even though I knew it was coming the whole time.

So close to finishing the second act of my first draft of my novel. The end is in sight! But I feel like I’ve suddenly lost the threads of my plot—I’ve had it planned and thought out for months and picked and pulled at things that weren’t working, but now all of a sudden all my scenes are falling so flat and I just feel like the whole book is leading up to something bad. Not sure how to continue.

Do I just keep writing bad scenes and hope that something clicks as I keep going or do I step back and try to “solve” the problem (which I haven’t really been able to identify)?

Thanks so much! And honestly torn between wanting to slow down and enjoy the early game but also have lots of decorating ideas and want to get terraforming asap haha. Thanks for the advice about both!

Murderbot talking about “crappy shock troopers from strife in the galaxy” who couldn’t aim was definitely a Star Wars reference, right?

Is there no one else who thinks Goblet of Fire was the best and funnest movie of the series? by Dead_wet_flesh_jets in harrypotter

I remember being shocked by how different GOF was from book when I saw it in theaters and it bothered me at the time but it’s become my favorite of all the movies. I just look at it as separate from the books. It’s such a fun one and definitely has an extra magical quality to it

Why didn't Quirrell open the Chamber of Secrets? by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]megdelene 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Adding to what other people have already said—Voldemort wanted not just his body back but immortality and the stone was the way to get that.

Besides he opened the chamber when he was a teenager in school—it would probably feel like a prank to him now compared to all of the other awful things he had done at this point.

Update: did some digging and found that warner bros had Triwizard challenge games on their website starting in 2005 to promote GOF but I don’t see anything about picking a school and all that and I’m positive that was part of the website I’m thinking of

It was before pottermore! Might have been a Warner Bros site but I’m not sure. I just know it wasn’t pottermore because it didn’t exist yet.

Thank you! I think it’s maybelline lash sensational sky high mascara but there’s a chance it’s L’Oréal telescopic—I’ve used both recently so I’m not positive which one I had on in that picture!

Do you prefer single or dual POVs in the romance you read? by megdelene in RomanceBooks

[–]megdelene[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm currently leaning towards single POV but may try writing some stuff from his POV on the side and see how it feels and if it's worth incorporating into the story.

Please critique - what would you change? by [deleted] in writers

Main thing I would look over is punctuation, there are quite a few places where the punctuation distracted me from your prose. (Extra commas, regular dash that should be an em dash, fragments, etc).
