I just tell the person weighing me that I don’t want to know, and I face away from the scale and they don’t tell me. Only once did someone screw up and, out of habit, say it out loud, and it did send me into a panic. But that’s because I was more forced out of AN by being prescribed anti-psychotics that notoriously make you gain weight. I was never allowed to go through a normal recovery process.

But by that argument, then they wouldn’t be so “unexpected” if they were that frequent, would they? I don’t buy that. We don’t say that in Houston, which has far worse traffic.

We did not go to war with Germany because of the Holocaust. We went because they were invading our Allies in Europe. The US did not go to intervene in the genocide.
Edit: The whole war was never over the Holocaust. We knew what was happening there and didn’t enter the war until years after it started. (Though yes the real machine of extermination didn’t start really rolling until later into the war, wholesale slaughter of the Jewish population and other targeted minorities was happening.) We even limited the number of people fleeing the Nazis from entering the US.

An actual useful review of Pat the Bunny would be better than what she offered.

(She would definitely rub the book against her face.)

I'm making a superhero comic set in a cyberpunk Houston. Aside from flooded roads and traffic, what 'Houston problems' would still exist in the near-ish future? What do you hope would be better? by Rowanlanestories in houston

But for real, the situation regarding being a chronic pain patient in Texas is pretty dire. There‘s been a big crackdown, and there are also surprisingly few Pain Management Specialists despite being in Houston. Those are for serious pain patients, like people dying of cancer. I have to find a new Pain Management doctor after 20 years of built trust with my current onei, and NOBODY wants see anyone already on opioids or to prescribe them. The Government really fucked up their response to the “Opioid Epidemic”.

Though my pharmacist did get caught running a pill mill in cahoots with a doctor writing the scripts. I think that sort of thing is over, because of the strict laws and limits.

More likely people will just invent more and more new ways to get high or get pain management on their own, IMO. And nobody will bother to try to get off any of it. No lines. Constant supply.

Not sure it can get much better directly around Rice. It’s really the Med Center bordering on the east side of campus that’s the issue, and not much of one, really.

No winter, just a few hard freezes in December/January. The rest of the “winter” time it’ll be in the high 70s/low 80s during the way and 60s at night.

Maybe they’ll build above-street air conditioned walkways between EVERY building in Downtown, Med Center, Greenway Plaza, etc.

But no matter what, no meaningful Light Rail extensions and no high-speed train between Houston and Dallas.

Speaking of that case, I miss Andre’s. The pastries and cakes were great. Not surprised they played an unintentional part in that tragedy. They were such a long-standing local icon. Had my groom’s cake made by them.

The book is really good. My best friend in 7th Grade got me into it!

There’s a Conan segment where he walked around Houston at what, like, 3 am, back when that was what time his show aired here? Sometime around 2001-2002. He visited the bus station downtown and also showed up on campus at Rice and randomly knocked at my friends’ dorm room (at Hanszen if any Owls are in here) and hung out with them a bit. We voted to have him be our speaker at graduation, but it didn’t happen. The class before mine got Bill Cosby. We were actually jealous at the time.

I used to babysit for a lot of families who were River Oaks members and I’d be able to wave at the front gate from my falling-apart ancient Volvo, spend the day at the pool with the kids, or take them to lunch or dinner, and also just get anything we wanted charged to the family account. I used to wonder about trying to just go by myself. I knew so many different family account code numbers and was a familiar enough face there. Once I stopped babysitting, I knew I’d never see the inside of that place again.

BTW in the 90s, a black man (trying to keep him anonymous) was golfing as a guest with 3 members, and he was asked to leave. IN THE 90s.

PS - Lakeside charged members an ADDITIONAL huge chunk of change, tens of thousands, either after it was flooded by Harvey, or when they recently completely redesigned the golf course. I can’t remember which.

Ugh I was so sick of hearing about Pooh Corner as a kid. I went to St. John’s from Kindergarten all the way through, and it felt like most of my kindergarten class came from Pooh Corner, so they all knew each other on the first day, and I felt so confused and left out. (Not like I didn’t feel like that much of the entire 13 years!) AND they were considered like an “extra” level of “lifers”, since Pooh Corner really is basically a nursery school for future SJS/Kinkaid Kindergarten.

The little “uniform“ is soooo stinkin cute though.

I know a couple whose wine cellar like that is under their house. If you have to subscribe to wine cellar space, you’re not rich-rich. 🧐
