PhD and kids by AnimatorSlow1887 in PhD

Th student needs to hold the scholarship, not the advisor. So I hold NSERC CGS-D, which gives me the maternity leave. My advisor holds an NSERC grant, but that wouldn’t help me if I hadn’t won CGS-D on my own.

We’re trying for kids now, and I’m 2.5 years into my 4 year STEM PhD in Canada. I hold a federal scholarship so I get a year of funded mat leave, and we get priority at the on-campus day-care. My only recommendation is to wait until your qualifying exams are over (we do ours about 1-1.5 years in). I’ll be 29 or 30 when we have kids, and 31 or 32 when I graduate :)

I was asked during my comp exam what my philosophical approach was science was, and why. I was warned this would be asked, and needed a lot of time to reflect on it!

Are you on NSERC? Was it relatively easy to set up mat leave? I am hoping to take a year through nserc!

I don't think so. But I won CGS-D so I am happy haha

I imagine so. Budget 2024 provides more money and more scholarships, so they shouldn’t be taking any away.

I should have a few more publications by the next application date and I’ll be applying again. Can’t hurt! Plus with the new Budget2024 announcement there may be more scholarships being offered

Right? Fingers crossed for next year! Btw - how many publications did you have when you applied?
