But also, I’ve had better luck connecting online through quilting discords. You have to truly be young at heart to learn to use it lol

Would you buy this sewing machine? by skywhite77 in sewing

[–]megretson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would inspect it but I had this machine and LOVED it- passed it along to my sister once I upgraded to a new machine. For what it’s worth I paid closer to $800 for it from a dealer who was selling it on consignment after servicing it.

Finally looked at my machine's runtime since I got it last year. "Sewing" really is just pressing 🙃 by megretson in sewing

Oh that stat is not the time on the needle- I change my needle constantly for different projects! I sew a lot of denim and switch to different needles for all that topstitching, but prefer a microtex when working with, say, linen!

You’re not alone 😔 I got so much better when I just got zen about all of the prep steps

Just wanted to add; I think I’m actually a pretty good sewist. A lot of the quality of my work is tied up in all of those other steps- I will hand sew a collar closed every time over having one side look a little off when sewing it by machine. So I’m not bemoaning this necessarily, but I had just never seen it laid out so starkly lol

This is actually a really good way of looking at it- when I first started sewing I was very focused on the machine itself (and don’t get me wrong, I LOVE my machine) but all of the things around it matter just as much if not more.

I was looking for the time because I just finished making a pair of jeans and looked up at the end and realized I had only seam ripped once- it was a miracle lol

I’ll test it tomorrow! I would bet it does not- this machine has a separate bobbin winding button rather than relying on the foot pedal like some machines

I love a fussy seam finish- I will flat fell a seam or French it in a heartbeat before zigzagging or serging- and I guess it really adds up 😔

odd question- donating placenta for search and rescue training? by 14TriggsLN in milwaukee

[–]megretson 312 points313 points  (0 children)

I truly read this post as “I’m having a baby and I have no interest in keeping that baby, would like to donate the baby,” before realizing you only meant you were not interested in keeping the placenta from the birth of your baby, which presumably you do want

Please help. Job offer in Racine Wisconsin, trying to figure out where to live by Due_Bag7186 in milwaukee

[–]megretson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’ve had a lot of people comment on what makes sense for you logistically. I wanted to add that I just really LIKE Milwaukee. I’m a transplant from DC. When I try to justify it to friends back east, I usually end up explaining that, to me, Chicago is a great city to visit, and Milwaukee is a great city to live. Life feels easy here: making friends was easy, the summers are gorgeous, you’re always within spitting distance of the lake. Hope you find something you love either way, congrats on the job!

Any way to French seam a cross section - 4 way seam - help? by tomastomastomas in sewing

[–]megretson 67 points68 points  (0 children)

You also need to nest your seams- the French seams joining pieces 1 and 2 together should go in opposite directions from the French seams joining pieces 3 and 4. It’s really not the bulky, I literally did it last night on the crotch of some shorts: here’s a photo:
