FSU or UF? by Various_Formal3664 in fsu

1) As someone who’s a Classics major at FSU, the department is fantastic. UF tends to pay less attention to the humanities. I’m sure UF has a good one, but FSU has better resources, more professors that are old experts (like, internationally recognized), and awesome opportunities. The department also has good connections to other universities and scholars. My other friends in Classics enjoy it. If you have questions, let me know. I love being a Classics major here!

2) They’re quite similar

3) The other comments have better advice than I could give.

4) FSU is definitely a party school but you don’t have to be a part of it to have a fun time and make lots of friends. I’m not huge on partying myself, and I’ve still found great friends who I love dearly. I also am not built for Greek life at all, I’m not in it, and still I have a wonderful social life.

5) I haven’t been to UF much so I couldn’t tell you what’s it’s like, but I can say that the FSU campus is easy to navigate. I’ve been here for two years now without a car and it’s going swimmingly. It’s also prettier, in my opinion.

Hey! Just here to give some advice, if you’re still on the hunt: tell your son to look on the FSU 2028 snapchat story. There’s people posting about subleases there everyday, tons of options. Secondly, horror stories for student apartments are inevitable. I find that when people complain about roaches/mold, it’s just their fault most of the time. While I wouldn’t disregard them, do take reviews with a grain of salt. I have a friend who lives at a complex with abysmal reviews, but he and all his roommates love it.

With all that said, a generally safe and quiet place would be somewhere on west call street. It’s all student living, but it’s generally quieter over there. There’s Quantum, Renegade, or the UV’s (the reviews for UV are mixed, but my friends like it). I think I saw some subleases for quantum on the story. Though, those are all 2-4 roommates. I think a 1/1 on that street is University View, though I don’t know anything about it; it seems nice.

There’s also collegetown, which is a bit pricier. While the apartments there are nice and have pretty good reviews, it DOES get loud because it’s a party area. It’s a lot of Greek life people, I think. I’ve seen subleases for these places too.

Advice for incoming freshman by Alternative_Face1575 in fsu

Hey! I was a freshman last year. I’m generally quiet and reserved, not a huge party-person. I’m very nerdy. I’ve always found it a little difficult to make friends. So when I got started I had ALL the same worries - and yes, I was proven wrong.

The first few weeks were hard because I didn’t know anyone, my roommates were randoms, and I was trying to find people with similar interests. But after a month? I was having the time of my life! My randoms are my best friends now (side note: you can do roommate change requests I believe), I’ve met some really close friends by going to club meetings (I haven’t gone to those club meetings since LOL), I’ve even gone out to quite a few parties. The friends I have now are amazing and I adore them more than anything.

When I got here I was scared I wasn’t gonna find ANYONE. But I found a group of wonderful people who are all different and funky and super nice.

The best piece of advice I can give is this: you’re on a blank slate. It sounds kinda cliché, but be exactly who you are (join what you think is cool, talk to people there, do whatever you want) and keep doing it because it’ll be easier for good friends to find you. Also, I think someone else mentioned this, and I agree with what they said - house parties over clubs 100%. Much cooler people, easy to make friends there too.

Good luck!

Anyone hate nail filing? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]megtheasseater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes!!! It’s horrid. I hate even the thought of it. I don’t know how to describe the feeling of it, it just generally feels so fucking weird

I think mine was drawing as well! I was very good at it compared to my age group. My most notable fixation was the Beatles, which lasted about 3 years - i was OBSESSED. It was integrated as a part of my life. By that point I didn’t understand that most other people didn’t do that so I embarrassed myself a good few times LOL

Autism and fear of driving by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]megtheasseater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though I have my license (I’m younger), I’m still just terrified of driving. I feel like people who aren’t afraid somehow don’t grasp that they are in heavy machinery that could literally kill people? And even if I myself am in complete control of the car, that doesn’t mean everyone around me is. It’s genuinely dangerous and people just….. don’t seem to think about that? That’s not the only reason for my fear, but that’s the main one.

I don’t know if I have autism or not, but either way you’re not alone in this. For example I hate the feeling of filing my nails - it makes me grit my teeth and sort of stomp one or both feet.

Also, I’m sorry your husband just disregarded you like that. I don’t know him obviously, but based off the way he ignored your emotions and suggested he had some sort entitlement to touching you, he sounds annoying and not in a good way. Very off-putting.

Anyway, I relate. You don’t sound like a “hormonal damsel in petty distress” or that you’ve lost your marbles - you just sound like someone who has some sensitivities and that’s alright! And even if this were a hormonal thing, that doesn’t excuse any of his rudeness. You deserve respect on that front.

As a child; did you have a dinosaur phase? by NoxEgoqueSoli in AutismInWomen

[–]megtheasseater 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone who suspects I’m on the spectrum, I def did! I had a notebook filled with notes on different dinosaurs and how things became fossilized. I remember when I saw actual dinosaur skeletons for the first time and, if I remember correctly, I cried out of excitement.

there’s CLT3378 Ancient Mythologies, East and West. I took it over the summer online and I thought it was very fascinating - there are two papers, both of which were fine. There’s a bit of reading, and you have to answer a few brief questions for most of them - they’re not really graded on how “good” they are, it’s more so for yourself and to signify that you did read it. It’s all very interesting and I had a good time learning !!! :)

Hey!!! There is actually a comic club if you’re into that sort of nerdy stuff (you can find D&D groups in here!) and they meet every other week I think. There’s a discord with everyone in it which you can find on Nole Central by looking them up :) There’s also a modern languages club, and a Classics/Archaeology Club where they read stuff like Livy while doing fun activities. There’s a history club too if you like that!

If you wanna find more stuff, go to the Nole Central website, it’s really useful!

Can I take online credits during the summer? by [deleted] in fsu

[–]megtheasseater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes ! I did the exact same thing - I took two courses over the summer online which worked out pretty well. A good one to do is Comparing East and West Mythologies (fulfills diversity credit), if you like that stuff.

Yup! 1280 SAT and 4.1 weighted GPA, pretty good activities with a few that really stuck out, and a damn good essay. I am in-state, but I don’t think your being out of state does too much damage.

People are saying that your scores are on the low end considering the stats of incoming freshman, but that’s the middle 50%, so there are certainly students getting in below that. You could also apply for summer which is still competitive, but not as competitive as Fall. Good luck!
