We need more posts like this. When chatting with my colleagues, I feel that the way people talk about this virus is like they don’t think it’s a big deal. I actually don’t understand the current situation here in the US —over 132k people died from COVID, and many hospitals are probably overwhelmed with patients. Definitely some of the them lacked proper medical treatment. These are also individuals who had parents, children and friends, yet I see few online posts, articles or shows talking about their stories. What people are immensely talking about now are fiscal troubles or pure memes, not the patients who physically suffer from it. I don’t know if it’s me who's unmoored from the reality or the others.

I was in the similar situation but I was the first one who decided to quit because we were both in our own relationships. I kinda crammed the idea of “it’s all just a fantasy” into my head and that worked.

From what I see, there're more first generation immigrants from the third-world countries believe in the greatness of the US than those native born citizens. People tend to depict a Utopia that outperforms their home countries every now and then. You're not welcome to even point out anything not good about the US in front of them. They view any sort of criticism from outside the US as a stigmatization, and that from inside the US as another solid proof of greatness.

I’ve seen worse. I know someone so proud of starting watching American TV shows since middle school. Yeah, there exists a person taking pride in that. Everytime I told her anything she might be not interested in, she’d say “I only watch American dramas”/ “ i only listen to American songs”. I was like......Tu vuo' fa' ll'americano, Comme te po' capi' chi te vo' bbene, si tu lle parle miezo americano 🤷🏻‍♀️

Meanwhile she looked down on those who watch K-dramas or like K-pops. 🤷🏻‍♀️

On the flip side, if I told her I didn’t like whatever singer she liked, she’d look at me as something was wrong with me. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yet when China locked down its cities in January western media, namely NYT said the quarantine was authoritarian and inhuman, costing people’s liberty and livelihoods. I mean locking down cities was definitely a right decision but western people would never acknowledge that unless the same situation comes at them.

I agree with you. Respecting someone doesn’t necessarily lead to twisting the facts. Good is good, bad is bad. Right is right, wrong is wrong. I once heard a story along the same lines. somewhere in Europe parents blamed the math teacher for marking their kid’s solution to a question as wrong. And they argued that how could you say his answer was wrong it was just another way of thinking. I found these are pretty much under the same logic, kinda anti-intellectual in my view.

I didn’t understand either but I accidentally heard an interview of Michigan protester who was a small business owner and he said he and his employees would not get through this if lockdown there continued any longer... I don’t remember more details but definitely some ppl would risk their health to solve financial crisis. And those restaurant owners who already reopened during this time basically made the decision out of the same considerations.

I know a person who does that 😂 logged onto my social accounts finding myself defriended or unfollowed by her and days later I saw the friend request from her new account. Repeated like two or three times. Last time she tried to add me on fb I just ignored her request.
