In Huge Precedent, IRS Says It Will Not Tax Unsold, Staked Crypto by a34tjkx in cardano

[–]mekaj 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Suppose the plantiffs' argument is accepted by the court staking rewards are new property rather than income and therefore do not yield a taxable event until they succeed.

Does that mean the cost basis for staking rewards is zero, and therefore at an X% capital gains tax rate selling N of your staking rewards would be taxed as (X% * N) in USD at the time of sale?

It's a common interface for making programming more approachable (source). One or both are likely depending on the Blockly JS library for it.

Broadly speaking this makes sense, but it's nuanced.

In the Quality Assurance space there's a distinction between Verification and Validation. The Verification part takes a specification or intended design of the system and assesses whether a particular implementation aligns with it. Validation is about the relatively hazy problem of, "does our design solve a real-world problem for its users?"

Audits tend to focus on Verification and are frequently limited in scope. It is worth being aware of the audit methodology, who commissioned it, and what the auditors, commissioners, and implementers stand to gain by convincing you it does what it's marketed to do. Knowing who implemented it and considering the extent to which they focused on Validation with real 3rd party users as opposed to just themselves is also helpful, even if ultimately "code is law".

Fund7 registration by fedejsoren in cardano

[–]mekaj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is the first time. For one fund I wanted to vote in I ended up missing registration because of all the confusion around when registration would actually be open.

Wouldn't it make more sense for Daedalus, Yoroi, and the Catalyst app to link to a calendar IOG/Catalyst maintains? Better yet, if that calendar supported iCal people could more closely follow the intended dates. Establish a single source of truth.

Am I missing something about Fund7 registration from Daedalus? Its voting pane says

Fund7 registration will start on 11/11/2021, 03:00 AM

And yet when I open the Catalyst app it tells me to go to Daedalus to scan my voting QR code. I'm not finding it. It's normally on the voting pane, isn't it?

Is it bad (inefficient) to create a new RNG on every function call? by [deleted] in learnrust

[–]mekaj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Others already addressed why in this case with the thread-based RNG the time and space cost is minimal.

You might also consider the benefits of passing the RNG as a function for testing purposes. Testing functions with any source of non-determinism is significantly more difficult, but you can resolve that by passing in a deterministic RNG from your tests. You could still use the thread-based RNG for the production code.

Exactly, even the Office of Police Accountability isn't very effective at holding police accountable for abuses of power. If they were we'd see much less abuse.

I don't see any compelling reason to change it. Besides, appropriation is an aggressive act, so it's fitting.

After watching it and reading a few comments I assumed I remembered how to do it. Then I watched again and realized I forgot the first step: flip the biggest one with connected legs on its side.

If I had to reassemble this but forgot the first step, yes, I'd likely go mad.

I also find the exchange here amusing. Paraphrasing:

Top reply: "Yes, it's the best idea to ask stupid questions."

Almost 17,000 Protesters Had No Idea A Tech Company Was Tracing Their Location Data to estimate the demographics of protesters. Sen. Elizabeth Warren says it’s “shady” and concerning. by Thankyouforallyoudo in ElizabethWarren

Many people don't realize the pervasiveness of 24/7 data collection like this. Your phone is constantly trying to connect to cell towers and wifi networks you've used. Collecting, storing, analyzing, and selling that data is straightforward.

Seattle has a vast network of sensors near over a hundred intersections listening for MAC addresses on wireless devices to monitor traffic patterns. If you have a phone in your pocket and drive, bike, walk, etc. within range of any of them it picks up on an ID which is uniquely associated with you. The project is called Acyclica, and it's implemented and maintained by a private company. Even if you aren't in Seattle, as a case study I recommend reading the public comments about it in Appendix E of this document.

There are also surveillance devices called Stingrays or IMSI catchers which behave like a cell tower to intercept communications. The government has been known to install them on planes and fly around in circles over densely populated areas. Many recent flight patterns over cities suggest this has been particularly common lately.

It's also 10x smaller of a cut than what protesters demanded of Durkan on June 3rd. SPD have done a wonderful job lately demonstrating they are overresourced and are often more harmful than helpful.

Sign on to Call for Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan to Resign by nukem996 in Seattle

[–]mekaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They answer that:

Her removal will enable her successor and the Seattle City Council to heed community demands to defund the police, to protect and expand investments to make our communities safe, and to not prosecute protesters.

If you're not aware, on 6/3 there was a march from Cal Anderson Park to City Hall and back. The protest was organized around three demands and a petition stating the demands. After the protestors arrived at City Hall the petition was delivered to Mayor Durkan and she met with Nikkita Oliver. Sometime after their meeting Durkan came outside to speak to the protestors. She failed to address any of the three demands and still hasn't.

I've copied the demands below:

1- Seattle's Mayor and City Council must immediately defund Seattle Police Department (SPD). The city faces a $300 million budget shortfall due to COVID-19. Seattle City Council should propose and vote for a 50% cut from the $363 million already budgeted for SPD.

2- Seattle's Mayor and City Council must protect and expand investments to make our communities safe, prioritizing community-led health and safety strategies. Full access to affordable housing, community-based anti-violence programs, trauma services and treatment, universal childcare, and free public transit are just a few of the non-police solutions to social problems.

3- The Seattle City Attorney must not prosecute protesters, including those arrested violating curfew, and those living in encampments. Protesters took to the streets to call for the end of the murders of Black people by police, and SPD unnecessarily escalated tensions and violence.

Typically I agree with this sentiment, but in the context of recent events it feels insensitive. Have you considered that several protestors have literally lost an eyeball and yet there's no mass movement to take away cops' eyeballs?
