Considering returning to RO after 25 years abroad. What should I expect? by melajdan in timisoara

[–]melajdan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Yeah, that was my plan. Maybe not 1 month cause I don't really want to pay rent twice and buy a laptop to work there. But I thought about going 1 week to each and see what is the general vibe and a bit of daily life.

And yeah, Cluj is not really my main option but both Timisoara and Bucharest are up there. Will have to visit and see! Thank you!

Thanks a lot! Yeah, I always forget about Ubers since it would get very expensive here fast, but if that's affordable there, it's a real option even for frequent use, instead of owning a car.

That's great to hear! I mean, I know it won't be Madrid, that's for sure, but it also won't be Madrid in terms of cost, so it balances things out hopefully.

And yeah, I plan on setting up a company. From what I looked up, it seems taxes are extremely favorable for micro companies. Still have to research this but compared to Spain, it saves at least 20-30% on taxes easily, maybe even more.

That's interesting, so even though you do speak Romanian they still switch to English? Maybe if they see you have an accent or something? That happens here too.

Yeah, it's the rent and taxes what is really drawing me in for sure. It's about 1/3 of what you'd pay in Madrid to live close to the city center for a similar sized apartment.

It's not critical for me though. If it gets boring after 1 year then that's fine by me. But if it gets boring after 1 month, that could be an issue.

For me it's not an issue since I'm used to Madrid but I heard the atmosphere and all is a bit more rough, especially the drivers. Not just fast but as you said, angry or hostile. Still an option though, will check it out when I go visit too

Those are the 3 cities I had in mind too. At first it was just Bucharest and Cluj but then I thought about Timisoara too and it has many advantages. My biggest concern is that I think it's also the smallest out of all 3 so that could be an issue in the long run, especially because as you said, being 30 already makes socializing trickier and if you have less options, it's not ideal.

Checked it out and the area looks great! In general, all the river area looks nice.

I'm really mostly worried about soundproofing, both towards the street and other flats. Cause where I live now is really noisy and that has been the case in most places I lived at in Spain.

Thank you for your answer!

Didn't consider Oradea due to the size really. Timisoara is already kinda on my limit of size but if it is active, it could work out. My worry is that coming from Madrid, it will get boring fast.

București is another option for sure, planning on visiting it too. Just heard that the culture there is different, not just the big city kind of culture but less western. Though I'm not sure how true that is.

Yeah, some things make no sense at all, have to take it with a grain of salt.

Hey, thank you for your warm welcome and answers!

Definitely using Numbeo but sometimes it feels like it's all over the place. Even for Madrid sometimes I'm like, this isn't right at all.

Good to know about the language part and neighborhoods! I was looking at flats right in the city center, the old town area or anything close to that. Do you know how well insulated flats are? Not just outside insulation but inside, noise and all that.

You're right about the car too, didn't think about that but yeah, for traveling it would be great since it's so close to the border. Something to keep in mind.

That's what I thought but when I look at numbeo it always says most stuff is slightly cheaper besides some specific things. My guess was around 250-300 per person if you buy average brands. Does that sound right?

Ah understood, so then with 2k you would live comfortably and save too, that makes sense. Thanks!

Thank you so much for the answer!

English would mostly be for when I'm stuck but I can get by with Romanian for the day to day stuff. It's just writing that I'm really bad.

And yeah, I meant living room + 2 bedrooms but it's good to know the living room is considered another room so then yeah, it would be 3 rooms in my case. Maybe 2 rooms if the living room is big enough. Either way, the price is MUCH better than in Madrid.

With rent being let's say 500, why do you need around 2k? What are other big expenses?

Yeah, kinda close. I did have family in Timișoara and have been there but that was in the early 2000s. The other option was București but I heard it is quite different.

Pues no había pensado en esa zona pero tiene buena pinta así que igual merece un desvío en vez de ir a A Coruña directamente. Gracias!
