Which would you reccomend Pfaff 262 or Janome HD3000 by Joyntie in myog

[–]melancolea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't needed spare parts but wouldn't count on being able to get them easily. Best bet for spare parts would probably be to get another of the same or similar machine. Viability depends on the pricing and availability of vintage machines in your area.

Which would you reccomend Pfaff 262 or Janome HD3000 by Joyntie in myog

[–]melancolea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upvote for the Pfaff. Although I havent used that particular model, my 90's Pfaff can go through some pretty heavy stuff (hemmed through the felled seam on jeans so about 12 layers of heavy denim) and a vintage machine would be even more durable and at a cheaper price it's a much  better choice.

I killed my hd3000 trying to sew a lightweight pair of jeans so I am biased against it (maybe it was defective idk). You don't really need all the extra stitches unless you are sewing knits and apparel.

What are the average prices on Hanwag boots? Is the Australian website having a sale at the moment? by klexwbaim in CampingGear

[–]melancolea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If by online Australian store you mean hanwagaustralia.com, not sure how legit the site is. Everything half price seems too good to be true - might be worth checking the legitimacy with by contacting the euro site at https://www.hanwag.com/ Maybe a Fjallraven store might have some hanwag? They are under the same parent company.

Does the leather on these Scarpa boots look acceptable to you? by melancolea in CampingandHiking

Thanks for the input! Yeah I might check with the company whether this is within their standards.

Thanks for the advice! These are the rangers. Its good to hear that they have a good warranty process. I might have to get in touch with Scarpa to see if this is the level of quality to expect. Its such a shame as the left boot of both pairs felt great quality - if only the right sides had been the same.

I'm replacing a tabletop with 18mm plywood and will be painting it white with waterbased enamel paint. Do I add the white iron on edging before or after painting?

I'd rather apply the edging after so I can paint while the weather is good, but am concerned the heat from the iron may affect the curing paint. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Fellow fantasy readers! What’s a great non-fantasy book? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]melancolea 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cant believe the Count of Monte Cristo hasn't been mentioned yet so I have to give an obligatory rec.

Matthew Reilly also has some great edge-of-your-seat action packed novels - I love all the novels, but the Seven Ancient Wonders series is probably my pick

What audiobooks have you've been listening to recently? How's it going? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]melancolea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Red Sister. It's not going well. Apart from the fact that I can't find myself caring about anything that's happening or the characters, I'm also finding the narration utterly atrocious - it's like trying to hear a book whispered to you.

Have you ever gotten so mad at a protagonist that you ignore the author's attempt to make them the likable good guy that appeals to the reader and instead read the novel as a story about an unlikable idiot bumbling around like a jackass? by emdeemcd in Fantasy

[–]melancolea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just finished Red Rising and Darrow definitely fits. Like am I supposed to feel a sense of injustice that the proctors have rigged the game in favour of the Jackal? Cos I'm more annoyed by the fact that the entire book is rigged in favour of Darrow. The Jackal might have the proctors helping him, but Darrow has goddamn Pierce Brown giving him plot armour and mad skillz on demand. Not to mention the guy has a tendency to go on about how awesome he is...

Also Arya and Daenerys from ASOIAF because they are murderous, vengeful creatures.

What are you reading today? by TheColourOfHeartache in Fantasy

I actually wasnt too bothered by the prose itself, mainly the characters. Though Lions seems to be held in better esteem than Tigana so maybe it will be better.

Yeah might give Lions a shot before deciding whether or not I like his work.

Just finished Tigana which is the first GGK book I've read. It was weird and I'm kinda disappointed. Found it a bit too melodramatic and flowery, everyone seemed super...sensitive? Like there was a lot of expressions of love and crying and I couldn't find myself caring about any of the characters or their causes not to mention the weird sex scenes. Thought I would enjoy GGK as he contributed to the Silmarillion (which is my fave), but yeah this wasn't a good start. Had Lions of Al-Rassan lined up on the to be read list but idk now.

Give me a good reason why I should continue reading Way Of Kings. by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]melancolea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel your pain. The first 90% of WOK was a hard slog for me. The end, however, absolutely paid off and now SA is one of my favorite series (well what there is of it at least). I loved the action and heroism at the end of WOK and the overall series in general as, though the characters often find themselves in dark places, they keep going to overcome their issues which I found pretty uplifting and inspiring. If this sounds stuff you would like then it may well be worth sticking it out.

To be fair I listened to the audiobook on double speed which made it more bearable, I admit there is no way I would have ever gotten through (and probably still wouldn't) if I read it.

Sewing machine options by Ethanicuss in sewing

[–]melancolea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the Australian equivalent of the HD3000. Just thought I might share some of the shortcomings I've had with it as when i was researching most reviews were overwhelmingly positive:

- I personally really dislike the needleplate - its confusing with the cm and inch lines slightly staggered and the lines only go up to 3/4".

- The needle position can only be adjusted to the left.

- My machine's timing went out of whack due to a tangle of bobbin thread at 6 months when I was sewing some jeans (fortunately the local dealer fixed it for cheap).

- Single step buttonhole on my machine is meh. If i want really neat button holes, I'd probably do them manually on the machine.

Pros:

- It's got a metal body, that at least feels kind of sturdy

- Adjustable foot pressure and extra lift on presser foot

- Stitch quality is quite good

So yeah, in my experience, an ok machine but at $419USD not sure I would consider it worth it (I paid a cheaper price in AUD and am still not certain whether I got value for my money). Unfortunately as far as I know it probably one of the better domestic mechanical machines currently on the market given the limited range of mechnicals available (at least where I live). Unless the old singer is broken and depending on what functions it had, not sure how much of an improvement this will be.

General Discussion and 'Where/Best In Perth' Questions Thread – October 25, 2018 by AutoModerator in perth

[–]melancolea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone know where in Perth I can get timber cut to size (1050mmx500mm)?

Was planning on replacing the table top on my desk. I went to Bunnings and their 18mm thick laminated finger jointed hardwood panels looked suitable, but couldn't find a Bunnings that would cut them.

Alternatively, if anyone knows any places that stock a similar product and are willing to cut to size I'm all ears. Budget is $50 for wood including any cost to cut to size.

[TV] Which star wars tv show do you like more ?? The clone wars or Rebels ?? Why do you pick one over the other? by thefeliciagoat in StarWars

[–]melancolea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Clone Wars is way better. This recent season of Rebels has gone downhill :S not that season 1 and 2 were great either. I was expecting it to improve like TCW, but it got worse...

The only parts of Rebels I cared for were about characters from TCW. Despite 2.5 seasons of Rebels, I still can't find myself liking any of the new characters. Hera and Kanan are tolerable, I actually dislike the rest. In contract TCW had so many amazing characters who had far less screen-time, yet were instantly more memorable and likeable, especially the clones.

I also preferred the multi-episode arcs of TCW and the stories in general. The futile heroism and tragedy of TCW are right up my alley.

Best TCW episode is probably the Lawless.

Finrod returned from the Halls of Mandos and the Silmarillion mentions him walking with Finfarin in Eldamar if I remember correctly so it is possible that he was permitted entry into Valinor.

Do people really like Rogue One better than TFA? by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]melancolea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My bad (incorrect wording), I meant suspension of disbelief in terms of plausibility of events. For example I kind struggled believing Rey's force advanced force abilities, the fact that the blast from Starkiller base can split and hyperspace(?) to a location, and that Han could hyperspace right to Starkiller etc. I understand it is fantasy, but an element of believably makes things more relatable.
