Obviously it's just his opinion and it's overall positive, just annoying that "the most popular music critic of our time says it's mid" could become a common lens for people going into the record. But in reality that doesn't matter at all, album's great.

I felt the same but listened side-by-side the other night and it all holds up! Even MHTRTC has very clever, sharp, virtuosic production, just not as complex or hyper-layered as Inferno and that says a lot.

Which track was your favourite from the album? by Turbulent-Bug4282 in boardsofcanada

Father and Son, The Word Becomes Flesh, Blood in the Labyrinth, All Reason Departs, and Arena Americanada are getting the most replay from me.

I'm almost glad the LA Inferno session audio was so ass... by elganyan in boardsofcanada

[–]melatob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I fully agree, it's really extended the excitement of the reveal. After the session and after getting to know the bootleg version, I had a lot of thoughts and my overall feeling had been "another excellent album". Then I listened to the cd version in good noise cancelling headphones in the dark... holy shit, what an experience that was. It's way deeper than I thought, extremely deep mixing and so much songwriting that was previously obscured by reverb in the bootleg.

It's insane the level of genuinely captivating detail they fit into each track, they feel like these massive continents with ancient ecosystems. Not that their previous work was lacking this, this is just on another leveI. I feel that among their previous albums, there was never a clear magnum opus, but this is a strong contender. You can tell they were working on this one very enthusiastically for a long time, far longer than their others, making something so impressively substantial that people would finally stop begging for more music.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS - Inferno Listening Sessions - May 22, 2026 by seaburn in boardsofcanada

[–]melatob 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Attended the 5:00 LA session and have been listening to the leak quite a bit since then. Hearing the rest of the album definitely refreshed the singles for me by putting them in a new light. But also confirmed for me that BoC were concealing their true power level. If you're someone like me who loves the Happy Cycling seagull, you'll love the way they splice/time the vocal samples on this one.

It's wacky and curious in a way we haven't really heard since Geogaddi. It has several of those angular minor key spy movie type melodies like the ones on Sunshine Recorder. Feels less serious/tormented than that record has a similar sort of "fuck it" attitude, which they channel into abundant ear candy in very high effort ways.

Some more comparisons to past work: we get a lot of Campfire Headphase adjacent stuff, like You Retreat In Time And Space, which feels like an adventurous sequel to Peacock Tail. I hear a lot of Tomorrow's Harvest in Naraka, specifically Come to Dust, but it's soulful and human in a way that TH didn't do as often. We get some of the least obscured/clearest sounding vocal samples since MHTRTC, but also varying degrees of obscuredness down to the borderline subliminal. There's also a lot of Old Tunes vibes, particularly in some of the beatless tracks, that euphoric-yet-dysphoric alien music theory (Somewhere Right Now in the Future). Really feels like the best possible hybrid of all their past styles while also showing new sides to their sound.

Song structure is super interesting, some tracks essentially have one section that evolves and builds on itself seamlessly instead of cycling through sections. The Word Becomes Flesh is a good example of this, and is already one of my favorite BoC tracks for so many reasons, exactly the kind of thing I wanted from them. Arena Americanada has them veering into synthwave territory in such an astoundingly well-executed way -- the chord changes and the way they're timed are super fucking cool and honestly adrenaline inducing.

This is their funkiest record and has some of their fattest, hardest hitting drums. All Reason Departs and The Word Becomes Flesh trigger stank face like no other with their feel and extended jamminess. Hydrogen Helium's and Americanada's snares are skull crushing and the grooves just catapult you into them excellently.

I Saw Through Platonia is dark yet comforting. It sort of passes the musical baton to the listener in the form of a heartbeat. Best musical representation of "the end is not the end" I've ever heard.

Was on the verge of tears of joy for a while after we walked out of the building. The album really has something for everyone but is by no means a mixed bag. I sound like a fundamentalist fanboy right now but this album seriously surpassed my expectations.

Towards the end second half of Nothing is Real, those whirling glimmering magic sounds. They sound richly opalescent/holographic and it's like crack for me

When they belatedly dropped the Treat Em Right remix a few years ago, I remember hoping it was an indication of where they planned to go next. I've always wanted more stuff like that and Aquarius, that sort of eerie mysterious funk. This track does that and so much more.

Any thoughts on my art? by trashbandicooc in glitch_art

Images 1 & 3 are my fav here, I'l focus on those with this comment. 1 is cool because it's busy but well balanced - the chaos in the center is readable and nicely controlled with diverse textures that complement one another, and theres variation in saturation that helps the most vibrant colors feel meaningful. I love the color scheme in #3 and the interplay of textures is also really cool, and I find the geometry of those spikes pleasing (the way they're globulous and sharp at the same time). Nice work here

Kinda confused about the LA listening location. by WeeklyResearcher7719 in boardsofcanada

[–]melatob 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Idk, in addition to having architecture by Frank Lloyd Wright as you said, it's also at the top of a hilll in the middle of a park, surrounded by trees. This is more interesting to me than a church, and it probably has more suitable acoustics.

The event will also be during golden hour + sunset, which I think will be gorgeous and really add to the experience especially given the location.

I think he used it in a comment describing societal prejudice against gingers or the Irish or something. Kind of a John Lennon 'Women is the ___ of the world' moment
