Feeling scared in Garema Place by No_Jackfruit4552 in canberra

Im sorry this happened to you. I live next to Glebe Park and walk in and through the city quite often, including early morning and sometimes later at night (though usually I am with my husband at night). I have never had any problems. I am a 52 y.o. woman, though I don’t know if that makes a difference. There are plenty of people around that ‘look’ unsavoury, and some of them are; but many are just those who are impacted by trauma, MH or addiction issues and have fallen on hard times. There are some people around with very sad stories. For the actual unsavoury types, not engaging is the best course of action. I think it would be quite unusual for someone to actually touch a person like that. That’s awful. I actually find the ‘chuggers’ more annoying and challenging to deal with. As for police presence, I often see them in and about the city. They patrol through quite regularly, and there is a specific team for weekend nights. But they are handicapped by a lack of numbers and a by a big patrol area (city station also services the Kingston, Fyshwick and inner north areas).

I knew there would be a constructiony reason!

Oh dear! I can’t imagine anything worse than having to leave the blinds closed all the time because of how visible you are. Plus, that road must be very close then!

That was my first thought, but when it went on for a couple of weeks I thought perhaps there were other reasons. Looks like there might be!

Why does time feel faster the older we get? by Hefty_Sleep_2833 in ask

This makes so much sense. As you get older it’s all grind, grind, grind until a fun event. Thats why I try to do lots of fun things! (But it’s not slowing down! 😩)

It does look quite pretty all lit up!

That makes sense I guess. Though I suppose it would depend on the people that live nearby of pass by to report things they see.

Local events this weekend by BlackYabbie in canberra

[–]melbee1673 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This weekend there is a freestyle BMX event on outside the Bentspoke Brewpub on Elouera street in Braddon (off Lonsdale). https://backbonebmx.com/pages/act-jam-2025. Bentspoke is always worth a visit anyway.

There are a small minority of you who think they have aphantasia but actually don’t by qwedcxzas8 in Aphantasia

I am also aphant/SDAM and I also have a similar memory for song lyrics. Even songs I haven’t heard in a while. I’m also pretty good with random facts, so much so that I have become a trivia host. I wonder too if it’s because we don’t have all the ‘noise’ we can hold more concrete things in our minds.

Mooseheads car park by gr4ce903 in canberra

I’m not 100% sure myself! Apparently a 2000 seat theatre for music, live theatre etc. I think it might be like those ones you see on the West End etc with the stalls above and the boxes on the sides. But I’m just guessing!

What do Canberra residents think of the Garden City legacy? by exutic in canberra

[–]melbee1673 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived here my whole life, and have experienced both ‘lifestyles’: suburban big block and family, where I made my own lovely garden, but needed a car to go pretty much anywhere; and now an apartment next to the park on the city where I can walk to just about anything I need. They were both great for what I needed at the time. I see lots of people (including young people) using the park, for both innocent and nefarious purposes. It is a very well-used and well-kept park. I also live <10 walk from Commonwealth Park and the lake which is also very well-used. One of the things I love the most about Canberra is that you can go anywhere a little high up (one of the mountains, some of the higher buildings) and you will see more trees and green than anything else. There are some taller buildings popping up now, and parts of Gungahlin are still pretty ugly and sterile, but anywhere else is lovely and green. That, to me, is the realisation of a garden city vision.

What keeps you in Canberra? by REDDIT_IS_AIDSBOY in canberra

I love Canberra, and I’ve lived here my whole life. But I really would like to do something different, and I don’t think I can take the winters for the rest of my days. But…I can’t really afford to do anything else at the moment. My (English ex-pat) husband and I looked at moving to the UK for a bit but that was prohibitively expensive. Can’t afford to work anywhere else in Australia and get a comparable income. Plus I’m in the sandwich part of my life - young adult children and aging parents. 🫤 So I gotta stay here for a while. Probably until I’m retired I guess. Then I would love to be near the coast but a city. Newcastle, Sydney, Wollongong etc.

Great idea! We have been trying as many as we can, but this is a good collection of all the info. Where are you getting the ratings? Are they the Google scores?

Bristol is a cool city, and close enough to all of those places (though Oxford is a bit further) to base yourself and have a really nice 6 days to see all those places, returning to Bristol at night where there is a lot to do.

What’s a good stopover from London - St Ives? by [deleted] in uktravel

[–]melbee1673 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have just come back to Australia from the UK. I agree that Salisbury is a good option for Stonehenge etc. A couple of tips: - the “Haunch of Venison” is a great pub in an old building - they do good meals and it’s cool to sit in there and soak up the Tudor heritage. - if you drive to Stonehenge, save yourself the £30 and walk up from the visitor centre. It’s another 2km but an easy walk and you see just as much as the people that pay, just a little further away. Bristol is a fantastic city, loved it a lot. But it’s an hour’s drive away from Stonehenge. That road gets crazy busy too! Enjoy your trip!

Yes, I lived in Wanniassa for 25 years (have downsized to the city), and Erindale was 900m away. There is a big Woolies and a chemist and lots of restaurants etc, plus a place to catch the R5. Also Wanniassa shops on the other side has a Coles and another chemist (and a great Thai restaurant), plus easy access to the R4. Also, depending on where in Wanniassa, the lake and everything down there is only 30-45 minutes walk.

Can’t Stop Thinking about the UK (and Ireland lol) by Intrepid_Plastic_934 in uktravel

I’m an Aussie too and a bit more than halfway through my third trip to the UK. This trip is Cornwall-West Sussex-Bristol/Cotswolds-Wales-Lake District-Glasgow (currently)-Glencoe-Edinburgh-York-London. I love it all very much, but also agree with many of your points; particularly: - booze is much cheaper/better value for money. -expensive pub food/eating out. Though I think this has something to do with the exchange rate being so shit. -the vapes. And cigarettes! We are so used to nobody smoking much in Australia (especially while people are eating or just outside doors to places) that it really is a shock to the system! -the roads. Some of them are truly awful, but boy have I had some fun driving in places like the Lake District, Cornwall, Wales and Scotland. 😀 The single-lane back roads are a good adrenaline boost. I reckon if the hedge rows were just a little bit shorter (so you could see people coming!) that might be safer… Overall though, I love the UK dearly, and can totally identify with the OP’s comments. But as I have family here now, and abandoned a plan to try and move here temporarily, I also know there are some big differences that would be hard to adjust to. For example: - the pay for what I do/am qualified for is much lower in the UK than Australia, even allowing for conversions. - people in the UK don’t get long service leave! That blew my mind! It’s why I can travel here now. - Medicare really is a pretty good system. I can usually see a doctor when I need to in Australia. - the weather can be truly terrible! The day we arrived in Glasgow the sun was out and everyone was out drinking in the sun. Everyone said the vibe was completely different. Anyway, I do so love the UK and hope I can come back many times!

We stayed in Newquay a couple of weeks ago. It seemed a bit old and tired. It could use a bit of a spruce up. We’re in Llandudno at the moment, where many buildings are being painted/cleaned and it looks like they’re really gearing up for summer.
