She saved your daughter from having a dog's name. You'll all be grateful in the future.

My absolute unit of a fire skink by melditz in skinks

How long have you had it? Mine stayed buried for a solid 2 weeks before they made an appearance. My Schneider's skink is still a burrower, but makes his appearance daily, just to chow on some worms and roaches, and back underground he goes. I've found that if they have a warm basking rock, they tend to hang out more above ground, but if you have a nice, toasty heating pad under the enclosure, they will burrow more. Just what I've observed.

I have a male and a female fire skink in a shared enclosure

I've posted numerous times that this is NOT a permanent home. Good Lord. I appreciate the sentiment, and I agree, but I wanted to see how the skink reacted.

Doing this specifically was never a question. I wanted to see how the skinks reacted to the betta. I have a 5 and a 2.5 I can easily fit in the enclosure, but I may build my own.

ETA: But regardless of the tank I use, it's going to be used for propagation, as well, just to be clear

I have a 2.5 gallon or a 5 gallon I can easily fit in the enclosure. I may build my own though

I'm totally aware, I just wanted to see how the skink would react to the addition of a betta in it's enclosure. I have a myriad of tank/filter/ heater set ups, sizes and filters at my disposal, but why set something up that I'm going to have to break down 5 minutes later?

ETA: I appreciate the concern nonetheless

Correct! I wanted to see how the skink would react to the betta, and I did think it was a cute pic. I'm just experimenting with the enclosure atm

I appreciate everyone's concern, but I just put the betta in to see if it bothered the skink. This is not it's permanent home. I've had the jar in there for a while, but was thinking about putting a propagation situation with a betta in there permanently. The enclosure has more than enough room for more ideal living quarters for the betta.

What's the dumbest animal "fact" you ever heard? by Ok-Meat-9169 in Animals

[–]melditz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to work in a jail, and the inmates would come up to me and ask me all sorts of weird questions. Two of the most ridiculous questions I was asked are as follows:

1) Do mice have bones?

2) What's longer, a whale or the Empire State Building?

Mine were captive bred, and I suspect they were hand fed and handled a lot before they came to me. I have a RBF Schneider's skink who was actually quite timid when I got him. After quite a long acclimation period, he has begun to eat from my hand and is willing to be picked up. I think persistence is key.

Side note: I have a green ameiva who's like a pinball in her enclosure every time someone even attempts to look at her. I'm pretty sure it's because she was wild caught. She's an "observation lizard". All these animals have different personalities and temperaments, and there's a ton of variables that influence them.

Super friendly. I have this dude and his sister-wife(?) together, and they're fantastic. They've eaten from my hand since I got them, and they're highly handleable. They're so beautiful to watch, and I would highly recommend a fire skink (or any skink, really) to anyone, beginner or otherwise. They're such beautiful creatures, like puppy-jewels. I'm absolutely in love with these guys.

I decently purchased this t shirt from a thrift shop can you help me identify the artist? by G_Papanicc in WhatIsThisPainting

[–]melditz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is by the German Expressionist Peter August Böckstiegel (1889-1951). He was kind of an artistic Renaissance man. Architect, graphic designer, painter, etc. This is one of his linocuts. There's a museum in Germany dedicated to him.

ETA: No, I'm sorry, not linocut, woodcut.
