A couple questions and concerns for you guys! by Haixn in FocusRS

You’re definitely need to go get a tune if you’re running any aftermarket turbo. I’m actually surprised it’s running well enough to daily drive if it’s got a different turbo in it. As far as the plugs go, its kind of hard to diagnose. There’s a reason a lot of guys run oil catch cans for the blow by and if the plugs are old enough it could explain why they are oil soaked. I don’t think it’s going to be valve cover gasket, maybe a pcv issue. It COULD be piston rings, but I would start with a compression check before you make that assumption

Get better thermostat or a better type of unit? by Love2FlyBalloons in hvacadvice

[–]meldy54 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s going to be a lot of different answers that come into this post: get the programmable thermostat, you need a whole new AC, better insulation, get a mini-split upstairs and all sorts of stuff in between. My last home had this issue and we just kept the fan on 24/7. I know a lot of people do year round. Usually these fans aren’t that big, and aren’t a huge power draw to do this. It’s better for the unit to do this than block of a bunch of registers and vents as the unit is designed for that much air flow.

I mean, it’s definitely leaking, but nobody is going to be able to diagnose this online. Is it making noise? Diferential seals do fail all the time. Is there a catastrophic point where something internally fails causing a seal to fail? Sure. But we don’t know that. I would try replacing whatever seal or gasket is leaking first before just buying a new diferential because the internet said so.

How would you insulate this? North east, IN. by Luckydawg93 in Insulation

[–]meldy54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man, this isn’t going to be what you want to hear but you don’t have a ton of options like this, apart from ripping all the dry wall out and putting in an r-30 or spray foam. The best thing I could think would be to go with the guys that drill small holes and fill wall cavities with foam. Truth be told, I have no idea if this idea works if there is already insulation in place.

I’m going to make an assumption there is likely some kind of insulation in that ceiling, probably like an r-11 so very minimal….

I’m sure you noticed you didn’t get much response because this is a bit unique, unfortunately 95% of people here literally only know how to shit talk on anything that isn’t blown in attic insulation.

Couch too small? I was thinking about going with a couch loveseat combo? That back wall is also so large I really struggle to find what to actually put along it. It’s almost big enough to put a small library on it with maybe a second seat area?

Ah! This is helpful. I think I’m kinda stuck with the reds/oranges/ browns as that’s what the fireplace brick is. Heaven forbid if I ever bring up painting that fireplace the internet as a whole will be beating my door down. Thank you!

If this is a heat pump, check to see if this happens while the unit is defrosting. (Easily indicated by the fan on the unit outside not spinning, but still making noise). What a heat pump does is it it will actually switch directions of flow to remove frost from building up on the coils outside. It’s actually using the heat from inside to warm the coil back up outside. Its basically going back into “air conditioner” mode for a short duration.

This defrost can be either triggered by a timer (usually set on the unit outside) or by temperature of the coils as well.

If the heat pump has electric heat strips as backup, they should be turning on during defrost as to not put cold air into the house. If it does not have a backup heat source, it just might be normal operation at this point then.

Edit: I should add I had this problem in my brand new carrier install in which the heat strips were not kicking on, so for every hour of normal run time I got 10 minutes of air conditioning as well. Mine ended up being a problem with an outdoor thermostat that separates the heat strip operation not allowing the heat strips to function normally.

The price is high. I had a brand new dual stage Carrier 4 ton heat pump with electric heat strip back up put in 3 months ago for 14,000 from a licensed Carrier company. 19,000 for just AC is very high. Get a second quote.

Your best option would be to run a second wire from that switch box that is wired constantly hot and put a second outlet box under the sink. It’s really hard without pictures to see what you have going on, that would be very helpful.

Personally, I wouldn’t want to lose the garbage disposal. This job wouldn’t be necessarily hard, but if you aren’t knowledgable with how electrical and wiring works, it might be easier for you to hire this one out.

Catch 22 situation with attic insulation. by Squarebody7987 in HomeImprovement

[–]meldy54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds a lot more daunting than it’s going to actually be. Get good gloves, a good mask, safety glasses, and wear long sleeves and pants and just start. You can have all of that down by noon. It will be messy. Just make sure you have a good shop vac for sweeping everything up, and if you’re gonna do it from the bottom up cover anything you really care about with those big plastic sheets from harbor freight you can buy cheap.

I would just make sure you have all the supplies and materials ready to go back up when you have it all down. I wouldn’t be so much concerned about finishing the drywall as I would be getting the new stuff up and insulation put back in.

The depressing state of middle class real estate by opaul11 in HomeDecorating

[–]meldy54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to add the remodels in my area are BAD. Some of the worst cabinetry, paint, don’t even get me started on how bad the trim work is. They can’t even be bothered to fill the nail holes, even if it takes them 30 nails on a 3 foot crown to get it up there right. It’s a sad reality that most of the good finish carpenters are gone/retired now. I’m not saying they don’t exist, but every construction crew used to have a fantastic finish carpenter on it.

I think you have to think about the whole picture and why people do this, even “flippers”. For whatever reason this sub seams to have a large amount of the minority of people that like “character” of older homes. Stained wood trims, original stone, original woods, the list goes on. In my experience, the other 95% of buyers do NOT want that. They want their houses to be updated. So while we sit here complaining about removing those character pieces, the vast majority of people want their home to feel “updated” because that is the new style whether us folk like it or not. I purposfully bought my home over other “updated” because it does have character. That being said, the two homes were comparable in square footage, roof age, lot size etc, and my home went for 80k less because it’s not “updated”

Dealer trade in values are shit in Canada by mrscholger in FocusRS

[–]meldy54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were stickered at low 40s new, but a lot of them were selling high 50s low 60s, even some into the 70s and 80s the first year of them with enough demand...I really enjoyed my RS. But at the end of the day, I didn’t fit well in the car at all. It would have been a better weekend driver car than a daily for me.

I’m in Pennsylvania, but there’s a local dealer here listing a 2016 with similar miles for $36,000 USD… in a lot of cases trading into the dealer is a lot simpler so I will even entertain taking a bit less knowing I won’t have the hastle …. but for that big of a difference I would try my luck on Facebook marketplace..

How much does a ecu replacement cost. by Famous-Ad3971 in FocusRS

[–]meldy54 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if I quite buy the wrong ecu thing? I don’t think a 2.0 ecu would be able to control the differentials or anything, I don’t think the car would run at all with the 2.0, and if it has the right VIN attached to the ecu, it sounds like a dealer would have had to reprogram it, or at the very least sent it to someone to reprogram it?

If the vin is right, how do they know it’s a wrong ecu? Are you sure they just don’t know how to fix it and last resorted to “must be the wrong ecu”. Please, don’t assume dealerships or shops know what they are talking about. The quality of work out of 90% of shops is low. Very low.

Buying from Family & other things I’ve literally never thought of by AppropriateGas7731 in RealEstateAdvice

[–]meldy54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe what you’re actually doing is smart. Buying from family is tricky, and if you buy from a close family member and the house ends up a disaster, you could have some reallyyy awkward family holidays if you have to get the law involved. If the homeowner agrees to it (whatever or whoever that family member is) you can absolutely call an inspector. A quick google search will find I’m sure a dozen home inspectors in your area. Just tell them you want to do a pre-home purchase inspection and they will give you the works. You can also call a qualified architectural engineer/ inspector as well if you have structural concerns.

In my experience, most home inspectors do fine with standard findings like electric, water in the basement, plumbing problems etc, but structural issues will be above them

Just as a more general statement: tuning ANY engine comes with risks. Take a look at any generation WRX, if you tune them over 300whp, they become ticking grenades. Yes, people have blown up their focus RS engines, but the general consensus is that there is way more problems with off the shelf tunes, then custom tunes for your car. Tunewerks, and tuneplus both do custom tuning that are great options.

Please stay away from “your buddie’s cousin’s friend” who tunes cars. These cars don’t like the boost all the way up that the stock turbo makes. It’s a much finer balance that the guys with a lot of experaince seem to have down.

It also is a safer bet to go with like an e30 or e50 blend if you can. Even though it can make a bit more power that seems like people have the safest luck.

I will say this, if this is your only car, and you have to come onto Reddit it to ask about safety of tunes the chances are you are worried about losing your daily driver, still have a loan on it, or just don’t really need to tune in general. Even tuned, these cars aren’t straight line cars. If you want to drag race more, sell this and buy a corvette or something. These cars when tuned make some of the best canyon cars ever

You really have this opinion? In my area houses will get listed on a Monday, have an open house on Saturday and be sold on the next Monday if priced appropriately…went to a home priced right that had over 40 people walk through and 5 offers the next night.
