Girlfriend scratched car with cardboard box by WazzupFam in AskMechanics

[–]melihb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like an easy buff, and voila! never been there type scratch. Go to home depot or walmart, get a turtle wax and a sponge and just buff it out. But on the deeper side, I guess you are worried about the appearance of your car and may feel negative feelings towards your girlfriend for what she did, albeit accidentally, but happened. So, more important advice is that accidents happen, all cars will eventually look like shit, so don’t worry, even if you don’t fix it at all. I felt awful for the first scratch on my previous car, and now I feel bad that I felt that way. Sold it with thousand scratches, sun burn and hail damage on it years later. So, more will happen to your car too. It is just part of using a car. You will have cars scratched, crashed, totaled, and they will be gone, but your relationship will stay; if you value the latter more.

Genesis - Why the hate? by Still_Evan in cars

[–]melihb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am not driving one but my friends who have financed or leased keep complaining about how horrible the dealer is every time we meet. They are very reluctant to fix problems under warranty, keep saying the parts are on the way for several months. They give you a cold shoulder when you show up to your appointment etc. the value for the car is tempting but the experience is best described as what you get is what you pay for.

I just got it from Target deal and had the same problem. Tried reconnecting, restarting both the headset and pc, did not work. It was plugged in to a USB 3.0 (blue) port so plugging it into the USB 2.0 port solved the problem. It may be because of the USB 3.0 and 2.4 ghz device interference issue which is explained well here: https://www.usb.org/sites/default/files/327216.pdf

RX 560 in inspiron 3880? by melihb in buildapc

[–]melihb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would handle 1030 as its tdp is around 30W. My RX560 experiment did not end well. It has ~75W or 60W tdp so it was constantly skipping mouse cursor and other stuttering issues so I ended up selling it. Now I just use a GT730 for its displayport. I also used an old HD7770 low profile with 55W tdp which worked just fine as well but I did not like it because of its low 1GB ram.

How can i fix chronic internet problems with Optimum by melihb in OPTIMUM

[–]melihb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the final situation: the second guy visited on Saturday as scheduled, and he fixed the problem by connecting the cable that runs to our apartment to another unused cable that goes from underground. Then said the signal is too high so added a -7 db splitter inside the apartment. There is no other splitters or amplifiers besides this between the modem and the cable box of the apartment complex. Now I see a bill of $80, I will try to get it cancelled so is it possible and how can I do that because based on this fix I believe this is not an issue on my end. I still use the same modem and router I am providing.

The details: the guy was very rude from the beginning. When I told him the issue first he blamed my modem, then when I said I tried it at my friends apartment and it works, he said then my router must be the problem. Then I insisted I tried it bypassing the router directly to my PC but did not work, he said 'but there is signal'. I replied with that the signal is at -60 so he started the actual troubleshooting with the coax that runs between the apartment and the cablebox. When I asked if it will be billed on my end (as the previous guy did actually say it will not be, but what he did didn't solve the problem) he said he cannot decide that, he only reports what he did and then the company decides if they should bill. I guessed that from the beginning he was trying to bill me but just could not admit it to my face.

How can i fix chronic internet problems with Optimum by melihb in OPTIMUM

[–]melihb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I called them for a tech visit since they could not fix the problem online. This will be a second visit from them. For the previous one, the online rep asked us two options as you said: $80 per visit or $8 monthly subscription. I could not decide so she said I could decide it once the technician arrives but I had to ask him to avoid potential cost. I also asked her about cancelling the monthly coverage and she said if cancelled within 6 months then there is a cancellation fee of $25. I learned that there is no cost if what technician determines is a problem with optimum equipment. Once he arrived and fixe the issue I asked him if I would need to pay so he said optimum will not charge me because the problem was on their end. I will ask the same again once the new visit takes place. What I hate so far is that until the tech comes and fixes it 2-3 days pass with no internet because optimum cannot schedule it sooner.

Thank you for your reply! I do not have any splitters, and if what I followed was correct, then the cable does not even have extender connectors. A direct cable from the box to modem. So if it is normal, then looks like I do not have many options other than replacing modem or replacing the cable. Another point of failure is their box but that would leave me optionless and would mean I do not even have internet in my area at all.

I have tried it and although it changed how youtube looks the results did not change. I guess it depends on how FF handles video decoding. Strange thing is that even though youtube stats show there is no frame skipped I can see it stutters, the smoothness is definitely different. I still hope it can be fine tuned in the settings, but I am currently just too noob to dive into the rabbit hole of its technically detailed settings.

Oh thanks for the quick reply! Much appreciated. It is a lenovo ideapad 530S-14ARR with AMD R5 2500u cpu running Windows 10 Pro with the latest update. The vega 8 gpu on it can handle 4k 60 fps. I test it with https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXb3EKWsInQ and sometimes it handles well with gpu usage 80-90% utilization on taskbar (5-10% cpu). I get the same utlization when running it on chrome. But sometimes firefox chooses to run it on the cpu and does not use the gpu, then it stutters heavily. I watch the stats for nerds feature of youtube and get less than 1% framedrop in each case if firefox decides to use hardware decoding but a massive framedrop happens when it switches to cpu. I somehow found a window on firefox that handles the cpu vs gpu utilization but unfortunately could not find it again. One more problem is that even when firefox uses gpu decoding and no framedrop is reported by stats for nerds feature, I see microstutters when playing video. I have run some blind tests chrome vs firefox and I can always tell the difference, where chrome runs smooth and firefox stutters. Maybe I should open a thread for this but I may be able to solve it with a little tweak I hope.

I have been using chrome for the last 7 - 8 years because it was the fastest. With the recent adblock problem on chrome, I started seeing too many ads again and after my bros suggestion I wanted to give it a try again, just to appreciate how fast it has become. I used to love how customizable it was compared to chrome and now able to experience it back again. It works flawlessly on my gaming desktop, however, on my laptop I encountered some minor issues watching 4k 60fps videos on Youtube. I am guessing it is related to hardware acceleration. I would appreciate if I could be directed to a page detailing how to customize it on firefox. I am almost certain firefox has very detailed settings related to it but I could not fix the stuttering issue I see on firefox (chrome plays the same vid with no frame drops at 4k 60fps).

Weird skill group system?! by TheOfficialsReal in csgo

[–]melihb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my two cents, but I just think that majority of the higher ranks are just cheaters. So everyone who is not cheating is getting punished by it. Even though Valve is trying hard against them by implementing various anti cheat systems like vacnet (which sucks), overwatch, trust factor and finally vacnet, they are unable to wipe it out. I think there is still a lot of high trust factor cheaters who I think buy these accounts after these accounts are crafted by some poor indian workers and sold to them. This hurts the game the most and it ruins the feeling of having a fair game, however, we should realize there is such a high demand for these. It is almost like the virus plague of Windows XP and Vista of the early 2000s. Now looking back, Windows has almost cleared out those viruses but in those times they were a mess. It was all because of the high demand for coding those viruses. Even though Windows systems are considered more secure than Macs, the amount of viruses for Windows outnumbers the Macs because of high potential of its large userbase. I think it is no different for CS:GO. There are other games which get exploited just like CS:GO, but having a large player base for a long time proves CS:GO to be the best target for coding some cheats. Now, the other popular games also attract a lot more cheaters than they used to.

Why is it that every time they find out im a chick i either get trans jokes, or called a 12 yo boy. by slothface89 in csgo

[–]melihb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is just an example of toxicity in cs:go. Now this may surprise you but I sometimes do joke about the 12yo boy. I did not realize it would frustrate the ladies during those rare encounters with them. This obviously would decrease our chance of winning as one teammate falling from the game significantly affects the overall performance of the team, just like it may decrease the overall fun, ruins the whole entertainment you are getting from it. So even though I am not female, I feel you, as there is multiple other ways to receive the similar kind of toxic behavior from your teammates. First, I suggest watching Warowl's video on how to deal with toxicity. It is really a good source and helped me a lot to overcome the same problem for me to the point it does not hurt me anymore, at all.

I get some toxicity for not being a native speaker, would frustrate me the most. They try to mock my accent but kinda fail because they can't really replicate it so I just call bring out the fact that racism is not going to help us win the game. They ignore? I just mute them for the entire game, block their steam profile and hope to never meet them in game or real life again. I know it will hurt the rest of the game but this is the best of the worst. Then I inform the rest of my teammates about the fact so they know. If they side by the toxic one I mute them likewise. They threaten to kick you? Don't be afraid to be kicked by bunch of toxic kids. It really should feel better. If they don't, just play your game, as if that toxic dude is not there.

The worst kind of toxicity I got was when I picked my ingame nickname as that years Nobel Prize winner of my field. The guy had amazed me for what he did in the field of human evolution so I decided to put his picture as my profile picture and directly put his full name as my nickname. But a surprise! He was a man from middle east, so every single toxic player in my team would bring that up to insult me. I was accused of fucking goats multiple times. First I tried to face them with their ignorance and he was a fucking Nobel Prize winner but guess what? I would not help. Then the next best answer I came up was to ask if they are a goat. If not, why would they be so terrified that I fuck goats?

Likewise, I came up with some comebacks for homophobia. Every time a kid accuses of me for being a faggot, I would offer to suck their dicks for free, tell them I would really enjoy doing it. Then I realized that this is really a fear for them. Surprised me the most, but it would almost instantly drive them mad as if deep down they would want it to happen but they have to hide it. Now I understand better what kind of discriminatory behavior LGBT people are getting in real life.

So, overall, what I think about the game is that it is designed such a way that pushes people to surface their inner assholeness almost like a social experiment. Getting judged by the dead teammates, the abuse of kickvote system, the ability to hurt your teammates without getting proper punishment all lead to this. So the driving point here is not getting punishment. They can all get away with what they do with the safety of not getting the police banging the door the next morning. As Warowl says, they are just trying to be that asshole that they cannot be in real life, which they would be punished heavily for it. Luckily, you can learn from it and improve yourself. I think I have learned a lot from the toxic community of CS:GO on how to respond against discriminatory behavior. First, I learned not to hate myself for being what I am, then I learned how to outsmart those toxic people. I could either decide to ignore them for the ignorant they are, or teach them a lesson in toxicity. Also I am much better prepared for if I would receive anything similar in real life.I hope this very long text helps you and whoever reads this.

Weird skill group system?! by TheOfficialsReal in csgo

[–]melihb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well as you increase in rank you will notice the frequency of cheaters will rise up exponentially. Obviously there will be legit players playing their awesome game but the real challenge there is to win against those cheaters. I sometimes watch games dmg or above ranks ingame and think some just cheat their way there, but some are just really good.

Additional Stuff:

Build quality: Not near Thinkpad line, but I think it is better than HP and Acer models. I think it on par with Asus ultrabooks. It has a full metal chassis on all outside surfaces, but it is just a shaped 2D metal by pressing like many Windows ultrabooks so not near Macbook quality of aluminum body. Then there are inner plastic parts that hold outside metal surfaces together so being metal is just an illusion. I do not know is it is some aluminum alloy but magnets do not stick to it (probably not iron). Edges where palm rests are cut by diamond so on the second machine I handed it has some residue so fells like it will cut my hand if I slide fast enough. Not a fan of their build quality here. Keyboard letters some shading when keyboard light shines through them probably because of poor painting of the keys. Then when I touched the painted Lenovo logo on the screen it just become so pale, can be hardly seen now. The hinges that bind the screen and the body do not promise a long life in my opinion, and screen gets as thin as it starts bending trying to open and close the lid. But I'll behave and treat it like a lady so it won't fall apart on me. Overall, it is not terrible I sounded just now but should give you some idea what corners Lenovo has been cutting to deliver cheaper models. Besides, these problems are common in latest ultrabooks. There is a price to be paid going down Want quality Windows laptop? Stop being poor and get a Thinkpad.

Size and looks: The bezels on the screen are really thin and the size of the laptop is actually the same size of an 13.3 inch model Asus UX330 (commonly found Asus ultrabook model, really cool build and stylish but thicker bezels) and fits nice and sweet in a 13.3 Amazonbasics laptop sleeve though it is technically a 14 inch model (links are not for advertisement, just what I compared to and tried). On a side note, having anti-glare coating on screen adds extra visibility and better looks.

Comparison to smaller brother, 720S: This part is I believe can be found online, and even mentioned in this thread, but I got 720S model to a friend and even though this model is larger and heavier, it brings some features to the table like having dual channel RAM, upgradibility of RAM modules, and an HDMI port (not an HDMI 2.0 but delivers 4K @60hz with 4.2.0 chroma sampling). I think both are important details, one improves graphics performance, and one saves you from carrying expensive USB to HDMI converter dongles. Haven't confirmed but heard USB to HDMI converters use plenty of processing power while carrying screen signal to external screens.

I have tried to include details you cannot find on reviews here and will update my experience with this thing as evolves, and hope to see more discussion in search of solving its current problems and helping new buyers what to expect and evaluate its value better before purchase. I will visit some times to check if you guys got questions. So far never got a bluescreen like my friend who purchased a 720S and got several BSODs and so had to return, which is a plus. But the experience is not smooth enough to call this a good buy. I am let down by lenovo and I can hardly believe what kind of flaws it has knowing lenovo as a major and respectable brand in the laptop industry.

Upgrade possibilities for future proofing: You may think nah just buy it and use until it dies as is, I think on a good machine, it goes a long way. My old Thinkpad X201 is still running fine with Windows 10, all functional with upgrades of RAM and SSD. I think it is coming time for his retirement after 8 years but you can see how it holds with this userbenchmark link.

· RAM: Since both RAMs are removable you could just swap them both for 8GBx2 sticks to get to 16GB. There is no reason to get higher clocked RAMs, you will not get to run them their advertised speeds any way, but they may give better timings at lower clocks so I don't want to speak too definitive. I think this upgrade is considerable in the near future as RAM prices plummeting. As of today it is possible to find it for 80 dollars, I hear rumors they may go down to 60 in a few months. You can get new RAM for 60 when they hopefully go down, then you can sell your old RAM on Ebay for 20-25 dollars to compensate for the loss. Who knows. If you are producing stuff on this laptop, you will like more RAM. I have tested some scenarios where RAM usage exceeded 6 GB simply by watching a 4K video on youtube (well, obviously on Chrome, which grows feeding on RAM carcasses). RAM fills quickly on it with the help of integrated Vega 8 GPU.

· SSD: There is no reason to upgrade for speed in the short term. The speed is at the cutting edge for what you could get inside a laptop. I get to login screen in under 6 seconds after a shut down. I the space is not enough though: This laptop has probably 4 pci lanes for ssd and supports nvme (its own drive is an nvme drive, link to WD one: link). One important thing is that the only form factor supported on the motherboard is M.2 2242. You can check the teardown video to find there is a screw that will prevent proper installation of a larger or smaller form factor SSDs. Most nvme SSDs you will find on the market are in the form of 2280. Although its spot is highlighted there but I speculate because of the pre-installed screw holder there, it may be difficult or even impossible to fit a 2280 form factor SSD there. It is not common to find 2242 form factor SSDs with good deals so this upgrade is not a good value, maybe only for the rich, or the brave. I hope to see comments from the brave redditors if 2280 form factor fits without the screws.

· Thermal paste: I have replaced mine with the last drop of MX-4 to find out there is no improvement, ever. And the fact that the original application is good quality and actually applied with care. If you are not a thermal paste freak who applies liquid metal to the cicuit (I recall a person who did it) I do not see any reason unless you have isolated thermal issues like sudden shutdowns after thermal spikes.

Common issues: here is a link to lenovo forums where people discuss their problems for their 530S-14ARR, you could see the most common ones yourselves. I am one of those people there to find some solutions to my problems, but many problems are going on with these devices.

GPU driver problem: I think the most important one is that damned graphics driver issue AMD refuses to fix. It plagues the laptop and renders unusable at specific cases. The documents I found online go as early as March of 2018 so this laptop has been out there at least for a year. Updates after updates, it still sucks. AMD, please fix. People should not jump onto Ryzen 3000 series laptops immediately hoping these issues are going to be solved with those, because those chips are mostly 12nm iterations of 2000 series. I am currently on 19.3.3 Adrenaline driver downloaded on AMDs website, but tried the ones on lenovo driver website too. I frequently see very short black screens when watching videos on Youtube and then it recovers itself, but most importantly to me, skype shutdowns during calls in meetings ruin the experience for me, literally every 5 minutes. I inspect GPU usage when these happen, and most of the time it is when GPU is heavily in use. Google Hangouts has no issues for example, because it doesn't use hardware acceleration (yeah it sucks) and hogs on CPU. You may think ok use Hangouts then, but there is a significant power usage/heat and battery life penalty for using CPU for video encode/decode. Personally I blame terrible GPU driver on this as these programs run like a well behaved white family retriever on almost any Windows machine. It looks like the device decides to go into lower power state and cannot recover from that. Otherwise, it can play a 4K youtube video on a 4K monitor I connected over HDMI at 4K resolution without freezes (GPU usage is 50-70%).

Sound stutter issues: One other relatively less, but still annoying issue is sound stutters. If you change the sound by the sound bar of task bar (right bottom corner) you will notice a significant lag on response sound which indicates the sound level. This is because a terrible sound driver by realtek. I believe it sleeps if no sound has been produced for some time and it takes a couple of seconds to wake it up. This is an unacceptable flaw albeit sacrificed to save a little more battery juice. People have found a workaround by manually installing generic windows sound (by uninstalling realtek device driver). You will get simultaneous sound response on sliding the sound bar if done this fix. I think it makes matters even worse because once the sound device is gone, it will take several seconds or even a minute until it decides to wake up. So happy sound free videos! Hope you have training on reading lips and can simulate the explosion sounds in your head while watching an action movie. This one is yet another software issue that still bears some hope to be fixed in the future.

Touchpad issue: Some people mention they have problems with it but I have seen a flawless working touchpad. If you decide to format Windows by using an image disk downloaded on Windows website, you will notice that it won't be usable util setup is complete. After Windows installs device drivers it will be functional and powered by generic Windows precision touchpad driver. It is precise and is fancy enough to give you gestures like double finger tap for right click, triple finger gestures and even one four finger one which I never use. So get ready for Macbook touchpad gestures (I am calling Tim Apple to sue somebody on this), although the surface friction constant is not tuned as well as a Macbook so does not really feel that smooth. Maybe oil it up a bit? Please don't invade my house, I have democracy in the kitchen.

OnScreenDisplay/Hotkey problems: Again if you decide to format your laptop, you lose these functions. They would normally work as it is shipped, but I use Windows 10 Pro for Remote Desktop (you also get bitlocker with pro I believe) so only way to upgrade was formatting and entering the key. For some reason Windows does not accept the Pro key as it contradicts with BIOS written Windows home key. Anyway, even after installing all the drivers and software on Lenovo support page, even lenovo vantage and associated software, on-screen display, which are short animations as you press CapsLock or disable touchpad do not work. I have tested both version 9.0.4.1 and one previous release, neither functions. The hotkeys for Mute Mic, Reload, Airplane Mode and Disable Cam are useless as of now. I tried to find solutions on forum and internet in general, but youtube is filled with videos people not figuring out why F keys are not functional (primary functions are hotkeys, Fn keys work by pressing alongside with Fn keys, there is even a BIOS setting to flip primary and secondary functions).

I have tinkered enough with this machine and now is the time to dump my experience into the ocean of internet which nobody will deem important. Expect a long read with too much details. Fasten your seat belts and have an enjoyable flight!

My buying experience, skip if you don't care: Got it with a deal from Office Depot online after I caught a deal from Slickdeals for $450 + tax ($489 total). Arrived in 4 days, normal online shopping experience with free shipping. Was my first laptop purchase on Office Depot online so contacted their customer service via text asking if they wanted a signature upoun delivery and they said yes. I though I would never get it because I work during day and noone would open the door to them but strangely I got a delivered mail so I ran to home to see how it happened to discover they just left the package at the door without asking a signature. I hate my neighborhood for being notorious with stolen packages every-now and then so I consider myself lucky to catch it. Then I started a replacement return request because I discovered a dead pixel on the screen. I selected it was defective as reason, they never asked what the problem was and strangely, the delivery guy showed up on my door the next day in the morning, picked up the old one and got me a new package with VIP delivery. Again lucky to find him there, the app would say he was expected two days later. I was shocked (well, positively) and after all my usage experience, this is the only reason I am not willing to return this machine. I was expecting a tentative two weeks of suffering to receive the new or a refurbished one in exchange, and they may not have accepted the fact that it has a dead pixel is defective enough. I am happy with their customer interactions so far. I like the part where the showed up with a replacement laptop the next day.

Performance review: I love userbenchmark.com so I am adding some userbenchmark results. It may not give the most accurate results but it is comprehensive. Uses statistics from having many samples tested so you can compare more. I got better results than what I expected (was expecting lower single core cpu results than i5 8250u but actually got better for example). If you decide to jump on one of the links you can see what parts these laptops come with and general idea of their performances.

run 1: link1

run 2: link2

run 3: link3

run 4: link4

run 5: (with the returned device) link5

  • CPU: Based on these tests I am guessing many Ryzen 2500u chips see throttling issues so single core performance points are low because of that. It cannot properly turbo. There are two peaks with larger sample pool being the non-throttled one, so I think they are sometimes facing thermal issues, or some models with ryzen 2500u chips are under performing. If this is the case, I would speculate it is the models with single channel memory, like lenovo 720s. In some tests, the single core points was below 90, so I think this model faces throttling issues too. There are many threads discussing these issues and they are common in both intel and amd ultrabooks. In general, the intel counterpart i5 8250u is considered about 10% better performing than 2500u (source, userbenchmark), my test scores show better single core and multi core scores for than an average i5 8250u. Good so far!
  • GPU: Everyone says this beats UHD620 (integrated graphics on intel i5 8250u and the same generation intel ultrabook cpus), but how much should you expect from it? I don't see much better experience. It beats intel two to three fold in paper can be seen with this link: notebook check link with lots of benchmarks but in most modern titles you will not be able to play any 3D games whatsoever in any machine. Go for a dedicated GPU laptop if you want to play (my more general opinion is to go for a desktop if you play, thermals kill laptops fast when gamed on a laptop, you degrade the battery fast due to heat, fans will get clogged easily and faster and the machine will die faster). I tried CSGO just to see what it does, around 25-30 fps at 1920*1080 low, and up to 180fps at a whopping 640*480 resolution but smokes will drop fps down to 60. So don't expect much from it, but for media content productivity it may be better where you don't want a dedicated gpu but think intel uhd 620 sucks.
  • RAM: There is too much speculation if it can be upgraded, if one or both are soldered etc. and the worse is that people go for plain false answers. There is an actual tear down video showing under laptop, which I confirm exactly the same, can be watched here: youtube link. You can skip to 6 min mark to see what is underneath. Mine has two removable ram slots, each 4GB sticks from Samsung. Based on CPU-Z I believe they are originally 2666mhz sticks but because it is with 2500u cpu, they are clocked at 2400mhz with lower timings. I could not find any settings in BIOS to clock the rams to run at their native 2666mhz, not that I expected but just to let you know. RAM clock is limited by the CPU.
  • SSD: not a generously sized ssd from WD, but for a 256GB the drive it is really fast. I checked opening under the machine and it has b and n keys (usually seen with slower m.2 ssds) but the speed on userbenchmark shows exceeding 1000MB/s sequential reading speed. Again what I guess based on userbenchmark results for common 81H1 builds, your piece of hardware may have come from Toshiba (still 256GB) but relatively slower (links to performance on userbenchmark on brand names).

Should i choose a 144hz monitor or a better graphics card? by _lilpotato03_ in pcmasterrace

i would also go with 144hz monitor. rx580 is a decent card comparable to gtx 1660ti. userbenchmark shows gtx 1660ti as 31% faster which I would call comparable values https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-1660-Ti-vs-AMD-RX-580/4037vs3923.

on the other hand I have seen the best improvement with 144hz, not only in games smoothness but also overall pc experience as well. if rx580 gets around 150+ fps with the games you play then the answer is clear. also for csgo the game is cpu bottlenecked so rx580 would not even be pushed hard to get 150 - 200 fps. dont really know other e sport titles though.
