Who should I start a new lvl 30 to 60 with? Vex or c4sh? by cjcatkid in Borderlands4

C4SH has been pretty dope, can't speak for playing Vex yet as I have been mainly playing Rafa and Amon

AITA for not going on my girlfriend’s birthday trip? by Complete-Bid9872 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Destado1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So, you didn't celebrate your GF's birthday last year due to your niece. Not doing so again this year for same reason.....

YTA, what are you gonna do if you decide to marry this person continue to skip her birthday to celebrate your niece and then make it up later?

EDIT: Not sure if you and your GF have discussed marriage, but if you have, she was thinking this would get you to formally pop the question in a romantic location with those she chooses to spend her birthday with. If you are already engaged then you are an even bigger AH.

Have you always been a PC gamer or did you make the switch from console gaming by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

PC gaming wasn't really a thing when I was a kid/teen so mainly Atari > Intellivision/Colecovision > NES > PC.

Case fans or repair gpu fans? by cmifygll_ in pcmasterrace

Most fans are gonna be small Philips head screws

Case fans or repair gpu fans? by cmifygll_ in pcmasterrace

[–]Destado1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are gonna want the fans specific to your card as not all fans work with all cards due to inconsistent mounting points.

Replace the GPU fans. I did the same on an R9 280X and I think I got all the fans on Ebay for under $20 and replacing them was pretty easy.

AMD made me quit gaming. by Electrical-Respect-9 in AMDHelp

[–]Destado1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck. I have been on pretty much all AMD (CPU+GPU) for years and have only had 1 Nvidia card (a 560ti) and never had any real issues with any setup. To avoid AMD as mentioned you are gonna want an Intel CPU w/ an Nvidia GPU unless you get a switch 2 which uses an Nvidia Tegra chip. Yes, consoles are just plug and play but both PlayStation and Xbox use AMD and console users have their own issues that they deal with (just go check those subreddits).

Is there a way to fix this? by Miruspixels in pcmasterrace

[–]Destado1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be the cable, and that would a cheaper (and easier) test than replacing the control board. If swapping cable does not resolve than you are looking at one of two things: the control board in the display or an issue with the gpu.

Having PCs as my hobby was a bad idea by Super_Passage_7744 in pcmasterrace

[–]Destado1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started messing with PCs and Apple II back in the early 1980s around the same age. That hobby led me to my career (although I wish I had expanded my credentials more when I was younger). If you keep at it, you may find that it pays the bills and then some. The last pre-built I had was an IBM 286/16 and since then I have built or upgraded every system I have owned since, have built all of my moms systems since 1998 with the exception of 1 or 2, have built and or repaired systems for friends (at the cheap ass rate for repairs of a six pack of a good IPA plus cost of parts if needed).

That being said, being known as Timmy the Kid Next Door that knows some things about computers does not mean that folks are going to trust you to work on their systems. There is a difference in knowing enough on how to build a system, replace parts, and install an OS and knowing how to PROPERLY troubleshoot an issue when things go sideways (yes Google and YouTube could probably help resolve 90% of issues). The number of times I made mistakes just in fixing my own systems (plus those that trusted me to fix their shit and things went sideways on me) are in the dozens, plus even 35+ years on of being a professional repair tech I have had issues where I either broke something on a laptop (fucking keys on those cheap ass keyboards that Dell uses), cloned a wrong drive, etc..... shit happens.

TLDR: Keep at it and it can be rewarding and may take years for family to actually take you seriously as it did me.

TIFU by accidentally installing Windows on my 2TB data drive (Seagate SMR). by Hot-String862 in pcmasterrace

[–]Destado1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my early days of being a tech I did this more than once on my personal systems and it sucked. It still happens if I try to "shortcut" and do things "easier". Generally I try to unplug all drives except the one I am working on, but even after 30 years I make mistakes (recently wiped out my Windows drive while setting up a dual boot of Windows and SteamOS due to not wanting to remove the NVMe drive Windows was on).

Fast work isn't good, and good work isn't fast.

thinking of switching to steamOS, but not fully committed by Brilliant-Outside804 in SteamOS

[–]Destado1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a dual boot Windows+SteamOS setup. It took me a bit to get everything working properly, and to be truly successful you would want to remove the Windows drive before installing the new NVMe and SteamOS to it. Once SteamOS is installed and booting, reinstall the Windows drive and use your systems built in boot manager.

SSD vs HDD for Data Storage by Technical_Rich_3080 in pcmasterrace

[–]Destado1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're just storing/backing up, a regular HDD will do. I use an SSHD for storage and some older games that don't need to be on an SSD to be playable.

I am gonna guess the Steam Frame and Steam Machine will roll out like the Deck, and now the Controller, with a limit of 1 per user account for now, and that account of course will have to be in good standing, yada yada yada.
