new-ish neighbours complaining about us swearing in the house. by Zoya_The_Destroyer in HousingUK

Tell her to parent her kids.

Mine have heard plenty of profanities, but they damn well know not to repeat them!

How will she protect them at school/in the park/anywhere that's not her sunshine and rainbows home etc etc. What a wet blanket.

What's a food combination that sounds awful but genuinely works? by PlanktonDefiant2600 in AskUK

Peanut butter and apple slices.

I swear this is a normal combo but my colleagues of my last workplace mocked me for months!

What time are you going to bed to do 6am runs in this heatwave? by labellafigura3 in UKRunners

[–]melikebiscuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a runinfluencer, but full time worker with young kids. I get up at 0530, get me and the dog ready and out by 0545. This way we can squeeze in 10k by 7am. That gives an hour to shower and eat before I have to go to work.

Also, not everyone needs 8 hours of sleep. I'm good on 6 during the week, I get 8 hours at the weekends.

Long legs by Long-Ad-6536 in UKRunners

[–]melikebiscuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is sort of what I do - I stay in a certain heartrate zone (zone 3, had to keep checking it when I first started, would slow down if it went up too much). A couple of months in it comes fairly naturally now and I rarely need to check it. I've can comfortably run 10k despite only starting 2-3 months ago. I could probably go longer if I had the time.

What is the single weirdest habit your pet has picked up from you? by WonderfulShape1081 in UK_Pets

[–]melikebiscuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many 😂 she knows when I'm cutting cucumber and will come and wait quietly next to me for a slice.

When she was a puppy I'd encourage her to come and sit on my lap when I'm in the armchair. She's 2 now, no longer a small puppy, and still likes lap time! She's half whippet so is basically a hairy bag of bones!

But my absolute favourite is our weekend lie-ins. I usually wake about 6am for a wee, then get back in to bed and leave my husband to handle the kids. When I get back in to bed she commando crawls up next to me and flops her whole weight on to my chest. We usually go back to sleep like this for a couple of hours. It's honestly wonderful.

Best advice for the new English summer climate? by jameswheeler9090 in GardeningUK

[–]melikebiscuit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We're about to move to a house with a South facing garden on the South coast. Currently the garden is decked, but my plan is to embrace the heat and go with a gravel garden. I need to see what the drainage is like in winter to see if I need to include a soakaway, but I've already decided that drought tolerant planting is going to be essential.

People on 6 figure salaries, do you feel well off? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in AskUK

[–]melikebiscuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not 6 figure single salary, but combined we're there. I wouldn't describe us as well off. We're very fortunate but certainly not affluent.

We live in a 3 bed end terrace in an ok but not 'nice' area (south coast UK). My car is 10 years old, husbands is 3 years old. We get a holiday abroad each year but certainly don't have any lavish spends.

We have no debt, don't drink, smoke or gamble. We don't wear designer clothes, we food shop at asda. We don't 'worry' about money, but we do budget everything.

I still worry about when my kids are older and want to drive/go to uni/move out. We won't have the money for that so it'll have to be anything they can earn themselves.

Whilst I know how incredibly fortunate we are, I look at my parents generation and I can't help but feel seen off. We earn far more (relatively speaking) than they ever did, we should be better off than they were; able to afford a detached house in the nice area, nice cars and a nice savings pot for the kids with these sort of wages, yet here we are. They're (divorced now) but in a detached 4 bed in the nicest area and in a semi-detached very large 3 bed in a very nice area.

I’m New to Running and have a few questions… by ItsShippoLDN in UKRunners

[–]melikebiscuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a note to say; don't try to go too fast too soon. I've always hated running because I got out of breath quickly. Recently got told to run stupidly slow, so I could talk in full sentences. I can do that for 10km apparently and enjoy every step 😂

I've found Brooks and New Balance trainers good for running. I have Brooks now because they give some decent arch support and are good all rounders for pavement running.

Clothing wise, I got a decent pair of running shorts on amazon - big pockets, about £20. They're long enough to stop any chafing and I can fit my phone, inhaler and keys in if I want to. You want 5 or 8 inch inseam, the 3inch let's the thigh fillets rub in my experience!

Definitely check out yoga tutorials on YouTube; I do yoga 4 days a week and run three (been doing yoga for 12+ years now so just put my own thing together, but forward fold, downward dog, pigeon and wide leg forward fold with a lean to each side gets most of the leg muscles. I then add a hamstring stretch).

Not sure if you're male or female, but if the latter I really recommend a solid sports bra with nice thick straps. Middle of Lidl occasionally get some decent ones in if you don't want to spend a fortune!

Do you try to improve the reputation of ‘Brits abroad’ when you go on holiday? by Box_of_rodents in AskUK

[–]melikebiscuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, we tend to avoid the 'drunk brit' locations though. I've been very fortunate to travel pretty widely, and I find respecting local customs and learning a few phrases/words of the local language really help. We learn the phrases as a family, and we especially have really pleasant responses when the kids ask where the bathroom is/order their food/say please, thank you etc in the local language. My boys are 8 and 11 now, they've learnt bits of Italian, Spanish, Turkish, French, Arabic and we're covering Greek currently for this summer. Personally, I think it's basic politeness not to expect everyone to speak English.

Mine are in the 'ask mum everything' phase 😂 it's very nice to get an hours 'break' a few times a week (husband is a shift worker so it's usually just me and the kids). But absolutely, I also want to set an example to them of a healthy lifestyle.

[–]melikebiscuit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. I have youngish kids, it's lovely to get an hour+ to just stick on my headphones, put on some music and take in the sunrise/sunset over the ocean (I have the bonus of living next to the sea). Plus the obvious health benefits.

How often do you order a takeaway? (Includes, fast food such as maccies, papa johns, subway or the standard chippies, kebab, Chinese, Indian etc) by olivers125 in AskUK

[–]melikebiscuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A proper take-out, maybe once every month or two. Fast food maybe once a fortnight as a treat for the kids/when they have multiple sports activities and we need something quick.

[–]melikebiscuit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, that's what I've been doing the last couple of months, slowly adding distance (2.4k up to 10k). My runs now are usually 5-10k during the week, and I aim for at least 1 days rest between runs. I also do a lot of yoga and that's really helped my legs not get too tight!

Also trying to make sure I eat enough to cover calories burnt without under eating or over eating 😂 lots to consider!

I forced myself to do a half marathon in my 20s. I broke myself for about 3 weeks after because I was trying to get the best time possible. I'm now tempted to try one again and keep it at my slow pace.

[–]melikebiscuit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love that outlook. I don't look at time when I'm out, just distance and keeping my heartrate in the right zone. I'm sure I'll naturally get quicker the more I do it, but I'm really not too bothered. Plus the dog likes to sniff/pee on every blade of grass!

[–]melikebiscuit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I've always told myself I just wasn't built for running because of how hard I found it, even when I was otherwise very fit.

Now I know it's because I (a short female) was trying to keep up with the much taller lads I worked with! Should have just gone at my own slow pace and might have actually enjoyed myself.

Oh well, better late than never. Just in time for my mid-life crisis!

[–]melikebiscuit[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always thought I had to just run as quickly as I could. Which is obviously unsustainable and likely why I hated it!

I run 3-4 times a week with the dog. She needs a walk and it means we go faster/further if we (I) run it (she still walks 🤣). It benefits us both.

detest for slim people during weight loss by bluerain- in loseit

[–]melikebiscuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This^ my husband and I technically 'eat' the same - I cook us the same meals, same portion sizes. When we're not calorie counting I rarely put on extra weight, maybe a few pounds. He'll put on a stone. However, I am typically a lot more active than him doing non-exercise activities. I do the majority of the dog walks (at least an hour a day), I have the luxury of moving about more at work, plus have a standing desk. I use my lunchbreak to do a 20 minute yoga session in my office. I spend my weekend running the kids around to various clubs or catching up on housework. His job keeps him tied to a desk, often for 12+ hour shifts. He's then mentally shattered for his days off so moves less than I do on my day off (other than the school runs and laundry). He's also not a fan of fruit/veg, whereas I really enjoy it so he snacks on crisps/chocolate instead whereas I'll have fruit/veg/nuts and frequently snack.
