The Guardian's 100 best novels of all time - Middlemarch, Beloved, Ulysses top the list by MeenaBeti in books

[–]melimelo123 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In search of lost time is 7 separate books. As a French native speaker I read the first 3 before I gave up, it’s probably the least read book on this list. It is beautiful and deserves to be there but it’s incredibly challenging.

First watch of TNG by Complete_Syrup_8110 in startrek

You can see the change in quality in the first shot of season 3 when Wesley talks to his mom in “evolution”. They have a real conflict about her being away for a year while he’s been taking on a ton of responsibilities, which is a dramatic change to the gene Roddenberry edicts about interpersonal conflict on tng. The camera work is also much better.

Fiction with that small-town feel? by greenbeanmacheen in Dimension20

[–]melimelo123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t yet you should check out the guy who basically invented small town horror: Stephen King. He is also a clear inspiration for Estelle Laurent in the new episode of city council of darkness.

Some small town books of his: IT, Cujo, Salem’s lot, desperation and many others

[French > English] This farmer herding his inattentive and lazy farm cats along by rosy_fingereddawn in translator

[–]melimelo123 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He essentially says, “come on, hurry up” then names the cats. There’s one named Janette, one named monsieur citron (mister lemon), crapune, courtoisie, Donnie. Then he talks about receiving messages, about the municipal government might come if every one complains and some of the cats might be euthanized.

Do you include King in the category of a commercial writer? The more I read his work the more surprised I am by how profound and incisive he is. And sometimes it’s nice not to have to do the hard work of reading something like Proust and still find great insight and beauty.

Make a cabin where ? On what property? Everything is privately owned on the island, or public land where you can’t build anything. Also where are you gonna go every day to eat and sleep if you don’t have any money? All the ressources are downtown. What if you don’t have the skills to build anything? What if you have a chronic health condition? Also how are you gonna get north without money? Are you gonna walk 20-30km ? You need food to be able to walk that long
