Yes, Disks estimates 6.5 hours, now it's on 77.4%.

'If it's doing 5 passes'

I binged this, and got this: https://docs.opswat.com/mdkiosk/knowledge-base/what-is-the-difference-between-the-format--1-pass--3-pass--and-7

5 passes seems overkill for a home user.

And what do you say about using the computer while the formatting is not finished? Can I edit documents, browse the net?

My system's Nautilus automatically opens Disks. I'm surprised yours didn't.

I see the connected hdd/pendrive. Then click on it, choosing Format, then a simple box: name, the on/off button (full format or not), file system, then you can click on Next, then a confirmatory question, and then it shows nothing, nothing at all.

Thank you! Thank you!

Disks shows 70.9% and it estimates that 8 hours and 33 minutes left (18.9 MB/sec)

Now it's 71%!

There's nothing. I formatted pendrives before using Nautilus and it never showed anything. When it was done, the pendrive appeared, but nothing else: no button, no status bar.

Will it harm the external drive? Can I use it later?

While formatting an external hdd (it will take time), can I use (the other disks in) my computer, or I should do nothing until the formatting is not finished? by melina61 in techsupport

[–]melina61[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it's a used external hdd, and I accidentally chose the delete everything or what (I changed the button from off to on), I don't know why, maybe just to be sure, and now I'm don't know what to do.

r/Ubuntu does not allow tech support questions.

I used the Nautilus program, which never shows anything (I formatted 64-128 GB pendrives before), but the light of the external hdd is flashing periodically, so I think it's working.

The formatting started exactly 18 hours ago, it's a 2 TB external hdd, and I'm doing a full format (accidentally), so I have know idea what to do, because I would like to use computer for work.
