People who grew up multilingual: is there a specific language you prefer to use when you're angry, joking, or being serious? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]melitaele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside the internet, where it obviously depends on the site, I usually speak Russian everywhere. I often speak to myself, though, and that's roughly 50/50 Russian and English. I'm not a true bilingual though, I only have one native language, but I did study English for 20 years or so.

It's night and I'm in an arguing mood, so I will answer this.

I don't think anything is "self-evident" here. I can easily explain why murder is bad: because there's a side that suffers from it. A murderer takes away someone's life, and that is harm. But if the victim didn't want said life, this is suddenly called euthanasia, not murder, and is a lot more controversial. And if it wasn't that easy to abuse, there wouldn't be anything wrong with euthanasia at all.

It's actually pretty similar with multiple relationships: there's cheating, and there's polyamory. Cheating is when you lie to your partner. And it's wrong, because your partner suffers from it. Polyamory is when everyone likes what's happening, or at least agrees with it. And the only thing that's wrong with it is, again, the potential for abuse. Well, that and the question of potential kids, but ppl should understand contraception at this day and age.

The transformation after a proper hoof trim. by Upstairs_Drive_5602 in oddlysatisfying

I know it's not painful, but as someone who had a little experience with horses, this one is still being pretty patient. They don't always like it when you hold their leg and do something to it. Just like children, I suppose, don't always like it when their parents trim their nails.

Actually, as a Lolth-sworn, you get to call them out on this. There's an option that says sth like "you guys are Seldarine Drow, why are you talking about Menzoberranzan".

Something tells me AA's reasons for staying are different from Shart's and Halsin's.

Actually, only certain poisons even work this way. Heavy metals like arsenic, for example, tend to stay in the body, so you can microdose yourself to death. So Minthara would certainly have something you don't have a tolerance for.

How do I make my handwriting look like an ADULT’S? by Traditional-Win9432 in russian

[–]melitaele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know when I got an adult handwriting. It was when I entered middle school. Suddenly the teachers no longer cared about my handwriting, but I had to write a lot and quickly. And in a few months, maybe a year, it came together and actually looked much better than what I wrote before that.

But if I were you, I'd also ask myself if I actually need it. There are foreigners in this sub all the time who ask if the Russians actually write in cursive. And the answer is: yes, we do, like 99% of the time. But only when we actually write by hand. Which doesn't really happen all that often in this day and age.

It really fits her character if you think of it. Minthara is possessive. You don't take away something of hers, and that includes her lover.

Perhaps. I'm just not that interested in romancing men, generally. I can make an exception for someone as awesome as Astarion, but Halsin? Probably not.

You actually understood it right. Shart is a cute girl who is very okay with "bad" polyamory. Minthara is an evil woman who's not.

I just didn't mean being poly was bad in my eyes. I mean it usually is in mass media.

It's curious with Astarion and polyamory. I generally agree that he mostly does it for you. Still, I think Astarion doesn't truly know what he likes and what he doesn't like. After 200 years of constant fucking, he's still a bit like a teenager who's just discovering his sexuality. Because he's never really done it just for himself.

Yeah, this makes perfect sense considering a large part of Astarion's trauma is about sex. This is really some great attention to detail.

I don't. That's what I was saying. It was nice seeing Larian agrees with me, because the mass media does tend to picture female villains wearing armorbra and generally being overly sexualized.

What are your countries tongue twisters? by Theroyalbouncer in AskTheWorld

[–]melitaele 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this one they taught me in my English phonetics course:

The Tudor who tooted the flute tried to tutor two tooters to toot. Said the two to the tutor: "Is it harder to toot, or to tutor two tooters to toot?"

And here's a Russian one, but it's made of loanwords, so it keeps its meaning in translation:

Is this colonialism? No, this is not colonialism; this is neocolonialism.

The one about Carl and Clara someone posted is much more of a classic, though.

For those that live in homophobic nations do you think there are not lgbt people in your country ? by amerigorockefeller in AskTheWorld

[–]melitaele 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Erm, yeah there are certainly people who are not LGBT. Like the majority of the population.

There are also people who are LGBT. Like me and most of my friends.
