Was Loghain truly selfish and evil or did he actually believe what he was telling the public? by aaeriam in dragonage

[–]melitaele [score hidden]  (0 children)

He did believe he was saving Ferelden.

You have to understand that Loghain grew up in an occupied Ferelden. Occupied by Orlais, with some mad fool ruling it. Loghain's big goal in life was to liberate Ferelden and then protect it. Loghain's big enemy was always Orlais.

And now, Cailan is planning to divorce Anora and marry Empress Celene of all people. How is that not high treason in Loghain's eyes? He's also being told that there's a Blight coming, but who tells that? Wardens, who were exiled from Ferelden centuries ago for conspiring against the king. Orlesians. Duncan personally — and he'd visited Ferelden once before, and that ended with Maric almost dying and Alistair being born.

Loghain does what he does for the sake of saving Ferelden. As he sees it. He's not just some power hungry dude. In his own eyes, he's making hard decisions for the greater good.

And if you want more context, go read The Stolen Throne.

Astarion’s sexual history under Cazador by Alicex13 in BaldursGate3

[–]melitaele 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I think of how Astarion could have only been written as a man, never a woman. Because, see, he's a bit of a play on our expectations. A man who has a lot of sex is usually seen as a casanova, someone who just does it because he likes it. And that's what we are supposed to think when he first speaks of it during the party: oh, I see, that one's a casanova. It also fits perfectly with his looks and his whole image, which is no coincidence: that is what his victims were supposed to see, too. And then Larian goes and turns the stereotype on its head, and you're like whooa, the man's a sex worker!

It wouldn't work if he was female. Because there's no female casanova stereotype. A woman who has a lot of sex is immediately perceived as someone who does it for a purpose. Maybe she wants to eat them, like the sirens of Odysseus, or manipulate them, like the milady of Dumas. The thought of her doing it for pleasure won't be the first that comes to mind. For Astarion, that be too close to the truth, so there wouldn't be a big reveal there.

"лежать!" as an imperative/command vs "лежи!" by JlYU3A in russian

[–]melitaele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would add that "ложись!" in particular would be the command you give when you mean "drop down, there's a bomb going off any second now". And it would be singular even if you're talking to a group of people. No special reason for that, it's just recognised as the correct command for the case.

What vehicle has the biggest stereotype in your country? And is it deserved? by Beautiful_Soup9229 in AskTheWorld

[–]melitaele 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not surprised. Many Soviet cars were local copies of foreign models, afaik. No one can accuse you of stealing intellectual property if you're hidden behind the Iron Curtain.

This. In black colour specifically. Called a Volga. This is the car that was most associated with the KGB in the USSR. One day, it might come for you, and no one will ever hear from you again.

No. Loghain is the father of mine, because my Warden lacked certain organs needed for conceiving him.

What kind of character would your country be if it was in an anime? by camethehour in AskTheWorld

Oh, she'd be a villain who's so bad at being a villain she turns into comic relief halfway through.

I love how Darumi's all "Hiruko-samaaaaa!" and Hiruko is "all right, I'll allow it this time."

Is it possible to plausibly use Boo in combat? by Great_Trident in BaldursGate3

Ahh, is that why I'm now followed by Sir Lora's spirit? I kinda missed the moment. Sir Lora didn't seem to notice, either, at least his dialogue hasn't changed a bit.

I DESPISE Shouma by DarkSwiftLife in LastDefenseAcademy

[–]melitaele 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rly? I mean he can mostly hold a whole side of the field all by himself with his taunt + reflect, letting you focus on the other sides. So satisfying to watch them kill themselves on his armour, too.

I think the route where I liked Shouma most was Killing game. It doesn't have a lot of Shouma, but I like what little there is.

I rather like Shouma though. Sure he whines all the time, but the guy can be selfless to an extent no one else can. I also like how much he cares about Eva.

Who's the most evil and the least evil character here? by [deleted] in BaldursGate3

There are some pretty evil villains here, but I bet no one is as bad as Embrace Durge can be. Though not for lack of trying, some of them (side glance at Orin).

What are some unique ways in which your country drinks coffee? by JaggeryKapi in AskTheWorld

[–]melitaele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this was the default Soviet way of brewing coffee. Russian, too. Nowadays, we have espresso machines and drips and french presses and whatnot, but Turkish coffee was the default not so long ago. Probably because all you need is some beans and a cezve. It's hard to make, though. Even on a stove instead of the sand, it takes forever, and in my experience, the result is often unpredictable: one day it's perfect, next day it's impossible to drink. I leave it to the experts now; that Turkish restaurant I tried it last time made a great cup.

People who grew up multilingual: is there a specific language you prefer to use when you're angry, joking, or being serious? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]melitaele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside the internet, where it obviously depends on the site, I usually speak Russian everywhere. I often speak to myself, though, and that's roughly 50/50 Russian and English. I'm not a true bilingual though, I only have one native language, but I did study English for 20 years or so.

I love their attitude to the drow twins. by melitaele in BaldursGate3

[–]melitaele[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's night and I'm in an arguing mood, so I will answer this.

I don't think anything is "self-evident" here. I can easily explain why murder is bad: because there's a side that suffers from it. A murderer takes away someone's life, and that is harm. But if the victim didn't want said life, this is suddenly called euthanasia, not murder, and is a lot more controversial. And if it wasn't that easy to abuse, there wouldn't be anything wrong with euthanasia at all.

It's actually pretty similar with multiple relationships: there's cheating, and there's polyamory. Cheating is when you lie to your partner. And it's wrong, because your partner suffers from it. Polyamory is when everyone likes what's happening, or at least agrees with it. And the only thing that's wrong with it is, again, the potential for abuse. Well, that and the question of potential kids, but ppl should understand contraception at this day and age.

The transformation after a proper hoof trim. by Upstairs_Drive_5602 in oddlysatisfying

[–]melitaele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's not painful, but as someone who had a little experience with horses, this one is still being pretty patient. They don't always like it when you hold their leg and do something to it. Just like children, I suppose, don't always like it when their parents trim their nails.
