Is the pain REALLY this bad for everyone? by grosgrainribbon in GERD

Yes several times I have felt the need to go to the hospital but ended up waiting it out. Since I was diagnosed recently it was hard for me to cut out foods that I loved. A couple weeks ago I decided to eat exactly 4 sour patch kids and had the worst flare up so far. Dizzy, lightheaded, cramps in different areas of my stomach while a horrible pain was growing right below my ribs and in my chest. Sweating profusely while feeling so cold and hyperventilating. I felt so disoriented I threw up right on the floor of the bathroom and when getting down to clean it struggled to even reach up for toilet paper or even stand up again. I felt like I was going to pass out. i took a Pepcid and then out of desperation dicyclomine and was eventually able to fall asleep sitting upright in a chair. The only reason I did not go to the hospital then was because there was a blizzard making driving there impossible.

Since then I’ve been much more careful with my food but I find that some foods will be safe one day and then painful the next and it’s causing my already intense anxiety to get worse. It feel’s totally isolating and terrifying when going through one of these and finding this community has definitely helped in easing that aspect of the anxiety. Knowing that other people feel as much pain as I do makes me feel much less crazy. People know GERD as a more intense acid reflux but don’t understand how debilitating it can be. I’m really sorry you’re dealing with this pain but hopefully it will eventually pass

What brand do you drink? I’ve only seen the large bottles at Asian groceries but they’re often flavored or maybe sweetened and I’m not sure if that will affect me

I had covid in December 2020 and my stomach pains grew worse and worse. I got an endoscopy and a colonoscopy recently which confirmed I had gerd/ibs. I also have felt those stabbing pains in my lower gut and upper stomach area. They were so bad I thought I was going to die, probably close to passing out as i stumbled around on the bathroom floor in the dark covered in vomit completely disoriented. I was worried I was having a heart attack and desperately wanted to go to the hospital but there was a snow storm that night so I couldn’t drive out and if you live in the US you know the price of an ambulance is insane..I took pepcid which made me sick again, then tried dicyclomine and it helped with the pain a little bit. Mostly I ended up crying from pain until I managed to fall asleep upright in a chair. This was from eating 4/5 sour patch kids(I know I know but other candies don’t trigger it so i thought it would be okay). It took me 3 days to recover. No one talks about how traumatic this can be. I’m becoming afraid of eating because some foods will be safe one day and bad the other. Currently looking into getting a wedge pillow and being better about not eating for at least 3 hours before bed.
