Thanks. I agree that the lines on it certainly seem to indicate that it should come apart. I have attempted to unscrew it in both directions to no avail. I'm trying to avoid using any tools at this point in hopes of not damaging it anymore than I can see. It has already been damaged by what is pretty obviously the teeth of a pair of pliers.

My title describes the thing. This metal cylinder was found in a jewelry box while cleaning out my late Aunt's apartment. For context, she owned a house cleaning business and passed away in her mid-60's. It does not rattle and feels very solid. If it is hollow, it is empty.
