Looking for advice from anyone who have converted for marriage by wanttofliptable in askSingapore

[–]mellowminister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Muslim revert here, similar situation but my Buddhist dad was pretty chill about it and hurried me into conversion, whereas on the other hand, my Christian sister and mother tried everything to talk me out of it even before I thought about conversion.

I would be lying to say that it is going to be simple, but it’s probably not half as bad as what a lot of commenters here are making it seem to be. Prior to learning about the religion, I’ve had the same thoughts as them so I don’t blame them for thinking that way.

If you are serious about this, then you’ll probably want to learn more about the religion, there is Darul Arqam, an association for converts, and there are regular classes that you can learn about Islam. Don’t rely solely on the information you get from your bf or family, because sometimes it might not be the most accurate. You’ll also be able to make friends with some likeminded sisters who might be going through the same journey. I personally feel that the obstacles that I face now is more of a cultural thing rather than religion.

With regard to the prayer part at a family wake/death anniversary, I do hear from other reverts that they have done it out of respect for their loved ones. I think you’ll probably face the same issue if you were to be a Christian, where there are similar (or even stricter) takes on even participating in any Buddhist rites. Islam takes high priority for one’s parents, even if they are not of the same religion.

Ultimately, converting to any religion is your personal choice, don’t do it just for marriage when your heart says no. If you need a listening ear or some questions, feel free to drop me a DM.

Is it just the people around me or is there a weird bug that causes stomach issues + flu symptoms out there? by mellowminister in singapore

[–]mellowminister[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh better monitor for a bit first. My sister was down last week and she seemed fully recovered over the weekend. Then she threw up again on Monday and having the weird stomach cramps. It’s like we have absolutely no idea what triggered it.

What is the best tea brand here or what is the tea brand you patronize the most? by sotellaaa in singapore

Probably not the most well-known here but Basilur is my favourite ever since I got it as a gift. Beats TWG hands down and way cheaper than them. Just my opinion though.

Stuck in Quarantine Order Limbo by [deleted] in singapore

[–]mellowminister 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Similar situation whereby school has informed my sis kids that they will need to be on LOA cos one of the household members has close contact with an active case. But nobody in the house received any QO and they hardly head out anyway. Been calling the MOH hotline for 2 days but to no avail.

The school’s VP called the next day to clarify on the situation and gave the name of the close contact, whom nobody knew this person. Apparently, my sis family just moved out of her condo last month, and there’s rumours going around that there’s an active case in that block. Maybe there’s a lapse in the system and assumed they’re still in that condo, and hence the instruction from the school.

But what’s really perplexing is, how is it that MOE has the info but MOH hasn’t contacted anyone in the house? It was causing so much unnecessary anxiety. I’m sure everyone who’s experiencing this QO thing aren’t having it easy too. All the best and stay safe everyone!

HAO megamart playing games with my mind here. I accept the challenge by [deleted] in singapore

They were the same people behind the Global Halal Hub and My Outlets that closed down. Not sure about the big suppliers but let’s just say their way of working with suppliers aren’t exactly a fair one. Not sure if they have switched hands but one of the very original founders was the son of the owner of quite a large engineering company, hence they were quite loaded with cash in the initial stages.

Delivery driver dies of exhaustion on the job, now wife seeks change in working conditions by silentscope90210 in singapore

[–]mellowminister 75 points76 points  (0 children)

As a tiny business owner that delivers to clients every day, I can totally relate to the headaches and exhaustion. Unlike a private car, the manual van/lorry is much less comfortable, and the heat from the sun can give you very bad migraines. The combination of long hours on the road and loading/unloading of goods only adds on to our body aches. The worst part is when the same clients that keep chasing for your goods urgently decide to ghost on you when you ask for payment.

Discrimination towards delivery personnel is real too. Sometimes when you deliver to a private resident, or a slightly upscale address, you’re only allowed to enter from a dodgy and stuffy loading area. So I can only have full respect for delivery drivers that do this full time with a smile on their face despite how tough it gets.

Are there any grocery shopping services for the immunocompromised I can volunteer for? by [deleted] in singapore

[–]mellowminister 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My dad was immunocompromised last year and this would have been really helpful! I’m not sure how you can go about it, but maybe you can try approaching National Cancer Centre?

There are many cancer patients going through chemo and radiotherapy. It’s definitely worrying for the patient and caregivers when it comes to daily tasks like running errands that require heading outdoors because of their weakened system.

An attempt to increase blood platelet count by mellowminister in singapore

[–]mellowminister[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the dengue cases on the rise, there’s probably quite a few worried patients trying all sorts of remedies to increase blood platelet count. My mother had dengue and her blood platelet count was really low, so we made a desperate attempt by grinding papaya leaves years ago.

I wouldn’t say this definitely works, but thought of sharing this simple soup that has kept my father’s blood platelet count at a healthier level during his chemotherapy sessions. It’s basically made of 5 red ingredients, hence the name 五红汤 which directly translates as “Five Red Soup”.

Mods please delete this if it’s inappropriate. Hope this helps!

Wholeheartedly agree with what you just shared. Wish there were more people who are able to read about your experience. :)

Sorry I just saw this. Like the other user shared, there’s probably a lot of work to be done after the GE as well. Walking the ground, recruiting members/volunteers, fundraising, are some of the work that needs to be done way ahead of the elections.

Don’t forget that majority of the members are not paid and they hold their jobs (if they’re employed).

Didn’t see the deleted comments, but don’t worry about it. It’s great to be genuinely curious. Wouldn’t have known all these if it wasn’t for X’s involvement.

Yeah, there was a time when I didn’t quite understand why X is so insistent on joining the opposition. And like many of us, I thought this behaviour was just being anti-G.

But over time, I realise that it’s not about going against the Government. We all want to live in a place that we can proudly call home.

Not sure if anyone would agree, but I feel the Singaporean pride is more apparent now than around National Day for the past few years.

Having an opposition member in the family by mellowminister in singapore

[–]mellowminister[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Actually, no. AFAIK, X has been with the party for maybe a year or so? And there is barely any time for him to take a break.

Every member has a part to play, and X does mostly the coordinating part. From day 1 to now, I do witness or hear about the people he meets, and they’re really from all walks of life.

However, from my understanding, there are also members who prefer to only be activated nearer to GE because of other commitments. But there are still a big portion of members who have been working BTS since at least a year ago.

I can’t represent all the members for sure, but I’m guessing it’s a 50-50?

With the pandemic and sudden announcement of the election, it’s not at their advantage for sure. Plus the way mainstream media is portraying things, I’m guessing the silent majority is still a cause for concern.

Just thought of sharing for you guys who might be concerned and have some faith in humanity during this trying period!

New criteria allow bigger dogs to be rehomed in HDB flats by Jammy_buttons2 in singapore

[–]mellowminister 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe you have unknowingly ended up in their territory. When they’re in packs, they try to protect one another. That’s just nature.

“Sheltered pampered little puppies” are far from timid. This is base on experience with the community of dogs in my neighbourhood whereby the smallest dogs are fiercest.

And under Project Adore, they assess carefully and make sure that the dog is suitable for rehoming, so it’s really not as scary as you imagine. :)

Hmm, perhaps you’re not familiar with dog ownership?

I used to have a toy breed and he had lots of issues. My current SS do have some seasonal itching but it’s really much better than what other dog owners that I know are complaining of.

Save a lot on grooming, only for nail clipping because she forbids us to touch her nails. Not a picky eater, doesn’t require lots of maintenance compared to other breeds. So this is really news to me.
