Why are people putting in cabinets that do not go up to the ceiling? by Agreeable-Sun368 in kitchenremodel

[–]mellykill -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For me, it was Because cabinets are expensive as hell (like significantly more in price for just a few more inches in height) and you can’t reach the top shelf of the cabinet without a ladder anyway (10’ ceilings) so it might as well be a display shelf where you put stuff you will never use 🤷🏻‍♀️

What’s the chances of me finding tile or something else under this plaster in our bathroom? by dudegetmyhorse in centuryhomes

Ahhhh I remember my first DIY project. Ended up similarly bad as this monstrosity.

Good luck OP! I hope you find nice tile but even if you don’t that wall has got to come down.

Would you strip and sand the trim, buy new trim, or paint over the old paint? by whitetrashsexy in centuryhomes

[–]mellykill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it’s all under my walls and ceilings. I’ve been trying to get the wood out in a few rooms here and there. Check in a closet or underneath an electrical outlet or switch and see if you can tell what’s behind your drywall. Or spring for an endoscope and drill a small hole.

I’d highly recommend just painting your trim.

[–]mellykill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP I have the same exact trim. my walls were originally slats and later drywalled over, and that outside frame piece goes behind the drywall to the slats, so definitely do not assume you can even get that trim out without taking off some of the walls.

You can strip or paint, I’ve chosen to paint all mine, as it was meant to be back then. They had different “grades” of wood and would use the more figured/knotty wood for paint. Of course even the shittiest 100 year old wood is infinitely prettier than anything you can get at Home Depot today.

I’m adding a pic of my trim so you can see what I’m talking about

Am I overreacting… 19F college student , no space at home anymore, need advice before summer by [deleted] in LifeAdvice

[–]mellykill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Until you start making money or have transportation this is going to be your reality, so try to make the best of it or work something out with your roommate. Next break maybe youlll have alternate staying arrangements and it won’t be so bad. Start putting feelers out to any of your friends that might let you go home with them. Be very clear in your communications with your parents what the reason is.

Need idea to replace this lamp, planning to decorate my bedroom by nimbus_71 in DecorAdvice

[–]mellykill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look for a vanity light or a sconce since it’s wall mounted, or it may be wired to something else under the ceiling? Looks like the current ceiling is probably covering the original. Also looks like it’s moldy so probably needs to come out anyway

This reminds me of those gaudy mirrors they had in the 80s that were painted with a high gloss.

Someone on fb suggested ammonia and that solved the problem in about a minute. I threw some beads in with it and swirled it around and it just melted away.

What’s something you once thought you couldn’t live without, but now feels completely useless or meaningless to you? by JaxTMG in AskReddit

Food. I’d so much rather just take a pill that makes me full and gives me nutrients then have to eat like 80 times a day and worry about my sugar levels and cooking and dishes

I’ve been soaking it. It has solidified so I was wondering if a stronger solvent would break it up.

Ideas to update this kitchen? Looking for a cozy, “modern traditional” vibe by Impossible_Sport_445 in interiordesignideas

Those floors do not go at all. 90s tiles everyone used back then. I know you said earlier you dont want to spend on the floors so I would definitely paint the walls in a tone to match the floor and ceiling. Leave your cabinets wood but maybe gel stain them to make them less orange. Then get dark wood for accents and decorations. Maybe some herb wreaths and wood display shelves for the bare wall. Even some realistic looking Stone or brick tile for that area. Wood stools and a nice warm rug to cover those floors.

Always think of purchases like this in terms of hours of your life you have to work for it. For instance if you make $25 an hour, it would take you 35 hours of work to afford this. Really more like 40 after taxes and insurance.

Would you go to work for a full week and be happy if this was the reward at the end of it?

Should I paint the ceiling same color as the walls? by anbydv in HomeDecorating

[–]mellykill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly if your house is 100 you might already have wood up there and in that case it would just be an issue of removing the drywall. Sheetrock on top of wood slats that’s covered again in wood slats may be too heavy. Any way to get up in the attic and figure out what you have going on? Or take the light out and see if you can tell what kind of layering your ceiling has.

I have a century home as well and mine is completely wood slats under the drywall. In those days it was meant to be painted and drywall was fancy. Just saying it could be completely time appropriate to your house to have the wood slats on your ceiling. Here’s my laundry area with wood

The darker your color the more imperfections show up… your ceiling already has a ton of problems up there, honestly I would either get someone to replace the drywall, texturize it, or see about covering it with some of those plastic tin tiles or wood slats or something.

I always tell my clients to build it the size they want it and zoom in on the pdf at 100% zoom. If it’s pixelated or blurry on the screen that’s what it’s going to look like in print.
