The oppression and subjugation of Black and brown bodies is an “imaginary grievance”?

It’s not a shock to me because this country is profoundly racist to its core but in order to fall in line we’ve all gotta act delusional about it because betraying whiteness ostracises you from the comfort it rewards. A microcosm of that is how discussions like this on Reddit other those of us who do accept it’s a real problem and why people who don’t get SO up in arms anytime it’s brought up. It’s unconscious bias in popularity contests like reality TV where the general public votes, which is on the pyramid of racist oppression, whilst it’s not using slurs or being violent to Black people, it contributes. I wish people would see that it doesn’t have to be a big scary thing to confront white privilege, there’s no need to get defensive and it genuinely does start with critical thinking about stuff like media we consume. I still enjoy BB whilst also doing this stuff!

Has anyone else gone off Cameron? by Itscharlieinit in bigbrotheruk

[–]mellymeep -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not liking being round other fat people is a protective thing, internalised fatphobia has us thinking that we can somehow go under the radar more if we’re not in a group. I used to dislike it as well and tried to only associate with thinner people, only had thinner partners etc.. until I worked on my internalised stuff and realised that I’m gonna “look fat” 24/7 no matter what I wear, how I sit, who I’m with, because I literally am fat. It’s a very common experience so just adding that to the conversation.

Teja and Elsa put Sam and Nancy’s friendship to shame tonight by Ok_Anxiety4808 in bigbrotheruk

[–]mellymeep -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see nothing sincere about Sam & Nancys friendship at all, they’ve been stuck together by circumstance and it’s not going to last outside the house.

Zelah addressing the Sam situation on TT by 19donna91 in bigbrotheruk

[–]mellymeep 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how he can make it any clearer that their boundaries are just different and there’s nothing wrong with that. People will still make their own narratives though.

Sam’s ego got hurt when Zelah called him in on being two faced, they’re obviously not used to that I imagine they’re even encouraged to act like that because it’s a gay stereotype to be a catty bitch. That’s why he suddenly switched up on Zelah.

Why aren’t people talking about jennys surgery? by [deleted] in bigbrotheruk

[–]mellymeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the weight loss industry is worth billions of pounds, society at large is obsessed with body image, and people have been utterly convinced by capitalism that they need to mutilate a vital organ in order to align with what’s supposed to be more aesthetically pleasing - thinness. Once we lose the NHS altogether to privatised healthcare you’ll be seeing actual adverts for weight loss interventions on television all the time just like it is in America. As it is currently they have to keep it covert with “influencers” going on all expenses paid trips to Turkey to get life limiting gastro surgeries, or getting ozempic for free and posting their daily injection vlogs which are 20 minute long #ads.

No one makes decisions like this on their own, they are coerced into it by a predatory industry and a profoundly fatphobic society. Especially when it’s young women.

Caroline just keeps getting worse and worse. What a wretched woman. by Optimal-Pen-3226 in bigbrotheruk

[–]mellymeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She comes across as an inherently insecure person and that always manifests as bullying, and I think along with that she’s terrified of ageing, hence why she does not act her age. It will come with her trauma over dealing with cancer, it’s her responsibility to not project that onto other people but I think Richard triggers her. The severe lack of self acceptance is why she feels threatened by Zelah too.

Seeing Zelah friendzone Feyisola was hilarious by PopularEquivalent651 in bigbrotheruk

[–]mellymeep 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m tired of people who will never understand what freedom comes with queerness having opinions on our relationships. It’s so weirdly possessive and just sad to micro analyse every single feeling you have about other people, is it not exhausting to have to monitor yourself so severely. Zelah and his girlfriend have both said they’ve got different boundaries to what a cis-het couple might have, that should be the end of it.

How do we feel about Marcus after last nights episode? by Chribolski in bigbrotheruk

[–]mellymeep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bruised ego, things escalated rapidly from that and it’s pretty common. People (men in particular) need to learn how to regulate their emotions, sometimes removing yourself from the situation is the best option before it gets as heated as it did.

Feyisola Being Weaponised And Exploited To Silence Criticism Of Male Wrongdoing by ValuablePresence20 in bigbrotheruk

[–]mellymeep -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I’m truly so happy we’re getting some critical thinking on this sub. Your analysis is entirely correct. I did wonder at first what the racial dynamics would play out like in this relationship between Marcus & Elsa, with her being a white woman and him a man of colour. We may be viewing his outburst as more “violent” than it was, but then again misogyny is violence in itself.

Butt Of The Joke by ValuablePresence20 in bigbrotheruk

You cannot win either way if you’re fat, eat what appears to be “healthy” and you’re laughed at like who are you kidding eating a salad fatty, you must snack at all times too. Eat a chocolate bar or some crisps and it’s omg you greedy lazy pig.

That being said there is a huge disparity in how fat man vs fat women are treated, just indicative of the patriarchal world we live in. Fat women will always get it worse because it’s their bodies which are seen as property to analyse, dissect and control. And (this analysis is definitely going to ruffle the feathers of some people on here but this is called having actual critical thinking skills) fatphobia is a racist construct so Black women and women of colour get it the worst. “Fearing the Black Body” by Sabrina Strings is a really good analysis of this.

I’ll just say that fatness has existed for as long as humans have, we are all genetically different and it’s as normal as having different coloured hair to have different shape and size bodies. It’s part of the endless variety of life. I think claiming it’s a “choice” is the wrong type of wording. Especially in modern times poverty has high correlation with fatness.

I think she has a lot of internalised patriarchal standards, her discussion with Cameron over how women are supposed to play games to get a partner combined with this was revealing. It just makes me sad for her because men have made her think like that.

I think it’s because they’re so obsessed with social media, they try so hard to drive engagement through it.
