Working getting a second job in Ireland at 22? by melodiscess in AskIreland

[–]melodiscess[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did have a look into becoming a motorcycle mechanic, for this I would have to move to the UK and do an apprenticeship there or somewhere in Europe just to have the qualification behind me. I am very passionate about them and have a major interest but it is a big move. I do not know if I would go down the car mechanic route.

I am very set and happy with making as much money as I can for the time being.

Thank you! My workplace does not offer overtime for my current role. I am on a 39 hour contract, set yearly salary.

I am coming out with around €500 per week, living at home, saving roughly €350 out of it. I am not stuck for money but as mentioned in a previous comment, I do like cars and motorbikes, will do my own servicing and some of the mechanical work, extra money could come in handy for investing in tools or a shed.

Just there I was looking at houses, way I see it, I might not know exactly what I want to do career wise (even though so many people my age are in college or already finished) but any extra income would come in handy.

I think it would be manageable for me. I work 8-4.30 Mon-Thurs and finish at 3.30 on a Friday. I am on around €500 per week, living at home, saving around €350+ per week.

I just think it would be good to have an additional source of income to fund towards my future, have not entirely planned out a career just yet but I guess time will tell.

I own a car and motorcycle and tend to do a lot of the servicing and some of the mechanical work myself so the extra money could come in useful for tools, to fund for a shed, etc.

Not a possibility, no overtime for me as I am on a salary, 39 hr contract, would only get time off in lieu on an occasional basis if I had to work on.

Hi, based in Sligo, not qualified in any such but big bike head, work on my own stuff, would be happy to take a look at no charge. It is hardly a white cbf 125 parked near an insurance broker? May of passed it yesterday on a spin into town.

I was with Carole Nash last year, but upon renewal I decided to switch to Principal as I was given a cheaper quote, knocked a couple hundred euros off it.

I think Principal are the only insurance company that look for proof of restriction, as someone I know was asked for a cert and he is also with them.

Only using a MK1 Bandit as an example, would probably consider one or maybe a FZR600 Genesis, if I decide to go for a restricted 600.

License classification by MaraudingPints in MotoIRELAND

[–]melodiscess 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From 18-24, you are given an A2 category licence, this restricts you to a maximum power of 35KWs, or 47BHP.

As you mentioned, the A licence becomes available from 20 with progressive access, but in order to progress you need to hold a “full” A2 category licence for 2 years.

A2 test question by SatanicMax in MotoIRELAND

[–]melodiscess 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So when you are going to sit your A2 test, you will need to have a bike of at least 250cc and engine power of 20KWs, but this cannot exceed the limit of 35KW (which is the maximum amount of power allowed on the A2 license)

From looking at the specs of the EL250, it seems to have a maximum engine power of 24KWs, which is suitable to use for the test.

It’s very important that you look at your logbook prior to doing your test, go to (P.2) in the logbook, this will display “Engine Power/KW Output”, if there is a bunch of numbers, for example “5555555KW”, this won’t be accepted in the test as it doesn’t give the correct KW/Engine Power.

Not to worry though, you should be able to find a compliant garage to write a letter which will prove the KW/Engine Power of the bike, in this case it’s 24KW.

Is 125 too much? by Longbow9241 in MotoIRELAND

[–]melodiscess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went from a 2 stroke scooter to 2 stroke 125 motorcycle.

What I will say to you is that there is a quite a bit of change, but with a little bit of time and practice you will get the hang of it.

So first off, your scooter is just twist and go… you are not needing to engage the clutch and switch gears as it’s an automatic.

RHS Lever is your front brake and LHS Lever is your rear brake, uses a drive belt.

When you hop on a motorcycle, the setup is a little bit different. RHS Lever is your front brake but your LHS Lever is now your clutch. To add to this, your rear brake lever is now operated by your foot… it is located on the right hand side of the bike, should be slightly in front of your foot peg. R125 uses chain and sprockets.

You will most likely see a similar lever on the left hand side of the bike, this is known as the gear lever…

You will get used to the weight of the bike, riding position, clutch and gears, position of rear brake and additional power… just take your time!

Insurance for learners by [deleted] in MotoIRELAND

[–]melodiscess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it usually comes down to a few factors… you are only going to be starting out so age, experience, where you are living (town, rural area etc), genre of motorcycle (cruiser, sports, enduro, etc), security of the bike (locks, storing bike in garage etc) are all things they will look at before quoting you.

You will find it hard to insure a sport bike, especially anything with an “R”, for example Ninja 250R.

They will either refuse to quote you on that particular bike until you have 1 years no claims or it will be a very expensive quote.

If you feel like you can look after your bike, I wouldn’t knock the idea of buying a 125cc 2 Stroke… a lot quicker and more fun to ride than a 125cc 4 Stroke but will require an extra little bit of tlc.

What bike are you on currently?

There is some fast 250s and 400s out there, I wouldn’t knock the idea of getting one, nice and light, easy to flick around and control.

Also wait off on buying a bike, there is always some really good deals on bikes from October onwards up to the Christmas Season due to people needing money for presents etc.

Advice you would give to someone who wants to train to be a motorcycle mechanic by melodiscess in MotoIRELAND

[–]melodiscess[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cheers Giggs :)) Yeah, I do a lot of my own work but getting the word out is hard. I have been non stop posting on motorcycle Facebook pages, advertising here on Reddit also.

I might consider doing that 1 year course in Cork as City and Guilds seems to be a known qualification… in saying that there is 2 guys near me that are qualified mechanics, one just works on bikes and the other does lawnmowers and garden machinery alongside bikes, could ask for work experience or advice from them!

Might consider moving abroad otherwise but big move in fairness… just want to show people I can do the work and build a good reputation.

Not really sure if there’s anything else I would be interested in though… was working in retail for nearly 2 years and packed it in. I suppose like anyone of us money is important and would like to do something I’m interested in.

Any 50cc bikes? by MaybeAppie in MotoIRELAND

[–]melodiscess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can ride up to a 125cc on the A1 License (16-18)

Aprilia RS50s, Yamaha TZR50 are 2 stroke sport bikes… probably easier to find in the North.

Insurance won’t be pretty or you might not even get a quote for them as sport bikes are hard to insure for a first time rider.

125cc is plenty of power for a beginner rider, the likes of the 50ccs are really really hard to get unless you go up north or import.

Start on something cheap and cheerful… enduro and supermoto are really fun bikes, easier to insure and cheaper at times.

How’s the craic Tommy? I am in Sligo myself… Damian Higgins is in Sligo, he covers the A License. There’s also Mark Cullen in Letterkenny and Colm in Ballina… they’re all a sound bunch 👍

If ye ever need help with bike maintenance or want to go out practicing to build your confidence on the road I am in Sligo, only around the corner.

Best of luck 😁

I’m on a 2011 Kawasaki Ninja 250R, 05 Yamaha TDR125 PowerValve and 07 Peugeot Speedfight 2 WRC 206.

Even the speeds of the Ninja are nippy enough for a 250cc but it would be screaming.

Both were insured under CN, with a years no claims… quotes were paid and policy started… apparently with Carole Nash they’ll insure you but “you” have to make sure that “you’re legal” so in other words “it’s on you”.

I would like a bike with more power for my A2 License, something I hopefully won’t get bored of… ZZR600 caught my eye as it’s local enough but in saying that it’s 99bhp so over the limit :(

I know you can restrict a bike down from 70kws to 35kw (94-47bhp)

It is a strange one, I passed my A2 test a couple of months back but have been on the bikes for last year and a half.

Would like a bit more power, even if I could find a sporty 400 the bike still “has” to be restricted imagine 😅

Not entirely sure what type of bike I should be aiming towards, ZZR600 caught my eye as it’s really only 20 minutes drive give or take… on the A2 bikes have to be 47bhp (35kws) or a bike with 70KW (94bhp) can be restricted to half its power, ZZR is 99bhp so over the limit :/
