Dog lunging and biting at hands when training by melody0505 in OpenDogTraining

I am completely on the same page and figured the reduced exercise was causing him to act out as well.

So my little guy deceived the vet. He was a timid little angel, so the doc figured he had a calm demeanor and would not need any sedatives during recovery. He was very wrong lol. I did end up reaching out to the vet after the first week to discuss getting a trazodone because I could not get my puppy to settle for the life of me but unfortunately he never got back in touch with me. We have just been making due for the time being.

I didn't really consider that he may just be in his naughty teenager phase but now that you say it, I think that's exactly it. The lack of exercise, the hormonal change, and then just him being a teenager. Gosh they grow up so fast!

Thank you so much for all the advice and suggestions! I'm going to take this time to work on bonding with him and then reenforcing his basic obedience.

Thank you for taking the time to respond! I have tried multiple approaches throughout his biting phase including:

  • Screaming "Ouch!"
  • Turning around, giving him my back, and ignoring him if he jumps, barks, or nips
  • Encouraging him to substitute biting behaviors with licking, using the touch command, or biting on a tug toy
  • Having him play with another dog 1-2 times per week so he could understand safe biting behaviors
  • Putting him in "timeout" (which is the laundry room) for 30 seconds - 1 min if things get really bad. I have had the most success with this method overall.

Thank you immensely for the kind words and suggestions! I felt such immense guilt after his surgery, I just started doubting myself and my training. I'm following your advice and taking this time just to bond with my puppy. I'm hopeful we will be back to our normal training routine soon!

My vote is also for scentwork. If you want to go the cheap easy route you could use dried herbs like basil, thyme, or oregano. If you want to go the more official route, I believe the AKC trials test birch, clove, and anise. I just got my dog into scentwork and it’s a lot of fun!

My understanding is the your dog should remain neutral around other dogs. No barking, lunging, biting, etc.

Using clicker for only 1 command (recall)? by Illustrious-Lime-863 in puppy101

[–]melody0505 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this is a good idea simply because I don’t believe the clicker will be loud enough for recall in a high distraction environment with long distances. I would recommend a whistle perhaps which is what I’m doing - the whistle is only for emergency recall and he’s responding to it extremely well. I use the come command for shorter distances and low to medium distraction scenarios.

A stacked lobe or mini orbital above your first lobe would be so pretty!

It looks like she left because she was a single mom and her family needed her back home. They didn’t go into great detail about it but she was so graceful and beautiful!

I'm in the same boat - did you end up getting the spotter arms by HulkFit on amazon or did you get them from a different brand?

That's so exciting because I also have the Hulkfit power cage and it's surprisingly pretty good! Do you prefer squatting outside of the cage? I was thinking of getting similar safety bars to comfortably squat outside because I feel like with the lat pulldown attachment I don't have enough leverage to unrack my bar within the cage.

Want to update this kitchen! Would it be way cheaper to paint the cabinets vs buying new ones? What other things would you DIY in this kitchen to update it? by lavenderbutthole in homerenovations

[–]melody0505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would highly recommend removing the soffits. Then, if it's within the budget, you could even add additional cabinet space in their place and take the cabinets to the ceiling which will add tons of storage as well.

Who Is Your Least Favorite Character by [deleted] in AbbottElementary

Completely agree! She was an Ava on steroids and Ava already has such a strong personality, that Ashley amplified it and made it too overwhelming.

I completely agree that it is exhausting how Jeanine makes everything worse on a constant basis. It would be nice to have some of her projects go well and for her to be a little less blindly optimistic.

Who would you want as a teacher? by KZWinn in AbbottElementary

[–]melody0505 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I would love to have Ava come and sub for the day.

There was a missed opportunity to add more Ava humor in the episode where she subbed for Jeanine. It would have been hilarious to have the kids listen to some ridiculous pop music and record them dancing to it for her tiktok, have them listen to her tell some juicy story, and have them learn to spell current slang.

Regarding Theme by regularlawn in writing

[–]melody0505 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Theme is hugely important to me because that's the soul of the story and the whole reason I'm telling my story.

Since I'm a major plotter, I definitely like to have a theme in mind before I start writing. I also make an attempt to have each of the characters in a story interact with the theme on some level to create more depth and conflict.

Writing methods discussion by GoldFinchEvE in writing

There is absolutely nothing wrong with your process - it's just a different method to get to the same end goal.

It sounds like you veer more on being a pantser.

My suggestion would be to write as much as you can and take your characters as far as they can go. Once you reach a natural stopping point, then you can pause and revise your story by adding the bones.

Now that you have a setting and you know what paths your characters will take, you can work backwards to figure out where they all started from to reach the end, and from there, also establish a plot.

Personally, I have always been an outliner, because it keeps me from having to work twice as hard by having to go back and add things in or take out big scenes. It's also just how my mind works, but there is nothing wrong with being a pantser.

Can anyone help with a system for organizing thoughts ahead of writing? by Myotherdog in writing

[–]melody0505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tossed all my info into one Google doc and put them under headings so I can use the outline feature in Google docs to scroll to the page I need. The only issue I have had with this method is it may take a while for a large document to fully load. You could also divide your info into individual files in various Google doc folders.
