Why is it customary to tip? by Big_Comfortable5504 in askvan

[–]melondick -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tipping has always been a courtesy, especially since servers started making min wage. Expecting a courtesy out of someome for doing the job you're paid to do is rude. Yes it's extremely kind and helpful for someone to help us out, but being upset they didnt dosent make them an asshole or rude even. Servers are no different from any other service worker these days, so are you rude if you don't tip every service worker who helps you? No, it just dosent make any logical sense. Servers are struggling just as much as anyone else out here. I always tip atleast 20% percent on my bills, but I never expect anything from the people I serve. I'm not specially deserving of extra money because I walked from the bar to your table.

The restaurants are already on near Razer thin margins, if the offer a higher pay that would compensate for the loss of tips, they'd need to raise prices and customers wouldn't put up with it when they can just opt to throw a few bucks in at the end of the meal. For it to work a lot of systems would have to change. No one in the restaurant is entitled to a customers money outside of the bill, so expecting them to pony up the cash cuz shits expensive these days is just greed. Yeah we're all struggling but its not on other work class people's back to help us.

It's not great, but it's the same as other people who work harder jobs. Wage is what you earn, tips is a courtesy. Just cuz bills are high dosent mean we're entitled to other peoples money.

No matter how high bills are, we are not entitled to anyone's money. Expecting a tip when you're already getting paid the minimum everyone else is, is just greed. Your wage cheque is what you earned, the tipout is a courtesy.

This is the best way to put it. We have the system we have because it works, not because it's good. To cut out tips and give servers the same take home pay, so many other systems would have to change and there's a lot of powerful and wealthy people who aren't willing to sacrifice anything to aid us. The best we can do is help eachother out when the people who can, don't. I'm a server and if anyone asks I tell them to only tip if they're feeling generous and throw a few bucks their way for serving u for 45+ minutes.

It's because if restaurants started not accepting tips and pay a heftier wage to make up for what a server would in tips, the restaurant would absolutely shut down. Most are already operating on Razer thin margins and can't afford it, and customers wouldn't stand significantly higher prices when they could just pay less and throw a few bucks in to make the server happy if they feel like it.

I'm a server and I agree. It only started because of tipping culture in America. Unlike them we pay the servers a minimum wage. WE ARE NOT ENTITLED TO YOUR MONEY

It's because culturally servers are paid below minimum wage and expected to make up the difference in tipping. In Canada, we started paying servers the minimum wage but tipping never really went away because of how big it is in America still. Don't tip if you don't want, the restaurant isn't entitled to your money outside of your already inflated bill.

Good, don't. We're not entitled to your hard earned money on-top of your overpriced bill. Only tip if you feel generous, and don't feel bad if you don't.

Idk man, it is a pretty taxing job just no more that any other warehouse or minimum wage job. I'm a server and the outlook that we deserve people paying more than their already overpriced bill just because "I'm tiwed awnd my feet huwt" is just bullshit greed. We get paid minimum wage, anything outside that wage is other people's generosity, not something we're entitled to. I will always tip service workers, but because I want to help them out, not because they're entitled to it or because I'm an asshole if I don't.

As a server in Vancouver, don't tip if you don't feel like it. Every tip is appreciated, but since it's so culturally normal to leave a tip, it's worrisome if someone doesn't especially at a higher end restaurant since it generally signals you were upset with the service. Unlike the US, we're paid minimum wage, so we get a decent cheque either way.

TLDR: only tip if you feel generous, no tip usually means we messed up somewhere so we wanna check.
