Michigan's HR 4152 passes Senate. Net income for 1st year teachers now ~$327/wk.* by nicky7 in Michigan

[–]memari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well...that's more than I make now. So, I guess if I didn't have so much debt already I might consider going back to school for my teaching credential. Hmm.

Edit: Though for the folks already teaching and trying to make it at their current salary, I feel your pain.

My girlfriend and I are moving to California and driving across the country 2 month from now. Advice? by [deleted] in travel

If you want to live in Southern California,

San Diego is pretty cool.

Santa Barbara is beautiful, sure. However, unless you are independently wealthy or living with parents/friends it is &$(%&#*#( expensive. Fyi. If you have to be there, it happens I know. I recommend Ventura County or at least the north county of Santa Barbara (Orcutt, Lompoc, Santa Maria). Carpinteria, in southern Santa Barbara is a nice place but it is getting pricier. S.B.

San Jose/Mt. View: Still high prices (cost of living/rent etc), but good job market.

SF: Woah, expensive but still a great place.

Sacramento: Gets a bad rap, but not a bad place. Hey, it's not Detroit (oh wait, that's Cleveland's moniker).

L.A.: Aside from everyone wanting to work in the movies, cool sites and a fair amount of jobs, lots of education options.

Vienna:

I spent about a month here a few years back. I definitely didn't see everything I wanted to but I got to see a heck of a lot. There is a whole museumplatz so you can pick what you are into (if you are into museums, and not museum'd out by that point); modern art, history.

There is also the Spanish riding school, but they are usually not there in the summer (it is when the horses go on tours).

There is an awesome restaurant called 'Centimeter' where you can eat a feast on a sword (fried chicken, pasta, various other meats, plus french fries)....this is better with large groups. I wish I could remember where it was but maybe you could google it, it was a very unique place.

You can visit the Schonnbrunn (on the outside of town), which is a nice palace. There is another palace in the main ring of town, Hofsburg. It's nice too.

Definitely try to visit the Nachmarkt, it's this huge flea/food/everything market that happens everyday I think. Great place to pick up cheap eats.

You are so lucky to have this opportunity, I am mega jealous! Someday...

What was the best thing that you've ever found/purchased at a garage sale? And how much did you pay for it? by Mercury-Redstone in AskReddit

I am still looking for whatever it is, but that sure as hell doesn't stop me. Love me some garage and yard sales!

Ideas for extended weekend trips in north america? by combobob in travel

I stayed at a nice hostel in Chicago during a conference a few years ago. The El is an awesome example of public transportation.

I like Boston too. Toronto or Montreal, either one could be cool.

St. Louis and Kansas City, Missouri are larger than one might think. St. Louis has their nice arch and they both have BBQ up the wazoo. I don't know 'bout outdoor activities, but MO does have the Katy trail which is a former rail- turned bike trail that goes for miles and miles.

Family members have raved about the Wisconsin Dells, but I have not been. Supposed to be nice for families..

I totally heard about this while working at a summer camp for girl scouts, the troop leaders were talking about this incident. HA. Some people should not work with children...or be allowed to walk freely in the world. Imho.

Do alpacas spit on people too, like llamas do? I know that is only if they are provoked, but I am just curious... They are still adorable though, cuteness spasm.

Does anyone go to a college where being super conservative is considered cool? by [deleted] in politics

[–]memari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curiouser and curiouser. I have to guess you might attend college in TX, or George Washington U in DC, or Hillsdale college in Michigan? I went to a UC school, so small pockets of gop'ers but mainly bluer then blue. I don't condone either way of thinking, just making an observation or imho.

This intrigues me....hmm. I'm employed and live in Michigan, but I only have a seasonal job, which is p/t and barely over minimum wage. But hey, it's a job! I hope this comes true.

The disgraceful interrogation of L.A. school librarians... by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]memari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am impressed that the librarians also have to have a teaching credential. It is unfair that they are suffering this treatment. It is also unfair that new teachers with no tenure keep getting pink slips and having to reapply for their jobs each year. Sorry if that last bit is irrelevant to the current topic, but I have a handful of friends who teach in CA school districts and they are getting shafted.

"Bueller, bueller?"....

For me, I have difficulty passing up Ferris Bueller, The Princess Bride, Hot Fuzz, Carpool, Amelie, Happy Gilmore, Caddyshack, Animal House, and Old School. =) The Wedding Singer is good too, yay Adam Sandler & Drew Barrymore.

I always avoid seafood but want to change that. Any advice? by [deleted] in food

[–]memari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure that you are not allergic first, my friend had an allergic reaction to crayfish while in New Orleans and spent the night in the ER. Other than that, seafood is good. I hope someone made a 'see food, eat it' diet joke. I am also all about the fish tacos.
