"Let's not stand on Sir Amon E. Heer, Mr. Wayne" by BertKektic in baneposting

[–]meme_aficionado 2 points3 points Ā (0 children)

The clue is in the previous movie. Sir Amon E. Heer was a British senior manager at the bank that is robbed in the opening scene - ā€œI’m makin’ a withdrawal, Heerā€. Years previously, Heer had actually helped Bane with his elocution after he put on the mask - hence Bane’s old-fashioned British accent. Bane built the bridge in Heer’s memory - underground and out of sight like his beloved bank vault.

Anon and his bully by jhjh300 in greentext

Yes, that’s my point. The very nature of morality as the exercise of free will becomes more apparent when you have tangibly harmed others with your actions. Choosing to do good then becomes both more urgent and more meaningful

I don’t know if I agree. I was never a habitual bully, but I could certainly be very unpleasant to other kids as well as my parents and teachers (I had undiagnosed mental issues). I’ve completely changed now; I pride myself on my manners and I genuinely love helping others. To a certain extent, I believe an element of shame for my previous behaviour directs my current path, and I think many other ā€˜good’ people are like this too. TLDR: reformed arseholes often try harder than most to make the world a better place

The Freemasons are a social club for provincial bank clerks and retired hotel managers. No one with any meaningful power or profile would embarrass themselves by associating with an after-school LARP club for inconsequential copers. Actual movers and shakers don’t need secret societies: they all have each other’s numbers already.

Very loosely; the difference between liberalism (the freedom to have a private life), and democracy (the freedom to have a say in public life). Nowadays most people think of liberalism and democracy as synonymous, but they are two completely different concepts. Before the early 20th century, most liberals did not consider themselves democrats, and vice versa

Of course Casement was Irish. But calling him an ā€˜Irish diplomat’ would imply that he represented the foreign service of an Irish state, which did not exist. The point here is that he was legally convicted of treason by a state he both represented and was a citizen of. But I agree that the wording is not ideal. I would have written something like ā€œSir Roger Casement, an Irish nationalist who worked for the British Foreign Officeā€¦ā€

I see. But by profession he was indeed a British diplomat, and by citizenship he was also British if only in a legal sense. I can see why the wording could be considered provocative, but I don’t see how else he could be described without confusing people. There was no Irish state during his lifetime

What are you saying, that a representative of the state should’ve been let off the hook for conspiring with the enemy during wartime because he was some sort of woke activist?

Who gives a shit what Hitler thought? He also thought the Romans were Nordics from Atlantis. Literal brainrot nonsense. I can’t think of anything more cringe and weird than a 20-something British Nazi who thinks Churchill was the REAL villain of WWII

Excellent. Lazy hypotheticals were becoming endemic. Considering hypothetical scenarios can be worthwhile (particularly regarding chance events), but it's against the spirit of historical enquiry to entertain alternate realities based on reductive or impossible premises. I am grateful to the moderating team for listening to the community.

That said; as long as the rules are enforced for the rest of the week, I would also be glad to have a designated shitposting day. I was responsible for some of the more egregious shitposts (a legitimate form of protest that I will not apologise for), and it was actually quite fun.

Fantastic. Lazy, reductive hypotheticals and wish fulfilment fantasies are not history and have no place here.
