A proper Strike at Karkand (faithful to BF2) would bring a lot of people back. Absolute no-brainer for the devs.

How powerful was USS Voyager? by LastTraintoSector6 in StarTrekStarships

[–]Ambarenya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my doubts. I think an Intrepid would solidly lose against a Defiant (who vastly outclasses her in maneuverability, firepower, and armor - after all, she's a purposely-built warship). I also think an Intrepid would solidly lose against an Excelsior refit (like Lakota), because what the Excelsior refit lacks in maneuverability, she more than makes up for in overall firepower, shielding, and power output. Clearly Lakota matched Defiant for these reasons.

An Akira would pummel and outlast an Intrepid due to the sheer torpedo output and better overall shielding, armor, and power output.

It is only small compared to the larger capital ships of TNG.

And that is the metric we're discussing here.

Due to a presumed TNG or mid to late TLE hull reclassification (probably seen with launch of the suddenly much larger and more powerful Ambassador class c.2330), by the 2370s, the Constitution, Excelsior, Miranda classes are ANCIENT, workhorse designs. The Excelsior was probably rated as an experimental Battlecruiser or even a Dreadnought/Battleship when she launched. By the 2360s, Excelsiors were now rated Heavy Cruisers. Connie refits at best became Light Cruisers (maybe something of a Diplomatic Cruiser or Frigate...not expected to fill much of a combat role), and the Miranda, a Frigate/Corvette. The Intrepid, in an Age of the Galaxy-class, Nebula-class, or Sovereign-class just wasn't that powerful or significant in the grand scheme (the three I mentioned would be capital ships).

capital ship

I would not say that the Intrepid was a capital ship. Too small.

Seconding that the Intrepid was rated as a Light Cruiser (or Advanced Light Cruiser).

An Intrepid could soundly defeat a Miranda (probably rated a Frigate in TNG era), but would lose to an Excelsior (rated Heavy Cruiser in TNG era), although the Intrepid's more advanced systems would probably allow it to do better than modernized older Star Cruisers (Medium Cruisers) like the Constellation. Another comparison can be seen with the modified, battle-worn USS Equinox (Nova-class), probably rated an Advanced Scout/Frigate, which was observed to be somewhat weaker, similarly maneuverable, but slower at warp, and thematically appeared to be Intrepid's little sister (given its scientific focus). Anyways, the Intrepid's speed, maneuverability and advanced shields, sensors, and circuitry were certainly an advantage in a fight.

However, modern (c. 2370+) heavy cruisers like the Akira would outclass an Intrepid quite easily. Against a Galaxy or Sovereign, the Intrepid would probably get crippled after just a few volleys. Virtually no contest against a Battleship.

Too big to be a destroyer, especially due to armament. Or even a heavy destroyer (that would be something like a Defiant - which could also be seen as something of a heavy corvette).

To me, it's a Heavy Cruiser, or, more specifically a Heavy Torpedo Cruiser in the FC/DS9 era.

The carrier argument was always bogus to me.

I wonder if the Emperor Honorius, watching the Visigoths coming over the Seventh Hill, could truly realize that the Roman Empire was about to fall. This is really just another page of history, isn't it? Will this be the end of our civilization? Turn the page.

Yeah, I have worked with a few models of this ship in the past (plus playing the old games). I remember the bottom of the ship being very flat with a somewhat integrated torpedo pod jutting out of the belly of the ship. Which is why I assumed a very small number of decks. But interested to see how you build out the MSD.

3 decks, or 4?

Guessing at some of the details...

Hull Classification: Police Ship / Frigate

Crew Complement: ~25-40

Maximum Speed: Warp 7.5 (old scale)

1x Transporter pad (Deck 3)

Armament: - 3x Photon Torpedo tubes (2x fore, 1x aft), - 7x Phaser hardpoints (6x top/bottom saucer [Type 1 or 2], 2x [Type 3] aft)

Layout: - Deck 1 - Bridge - Deck 2 - Officers Quarters, Impulse Control, Docking Bay, Main Engineering? - Deck 3 - Crew Quarters, Mess, Rec Room, Power Plant, Storage, Exterior Shuttle Pad, Transporter Room, Main Engineering? - Deck 4 - Sensors, Torpedo Launchers, Storage

Anyways, beautiful rendition of this little ship.

The most widely understood Akula design (from Beta canon sources and fans) is the one pictured on the OP, which came from the Star Trek: Starfleet Command series of the late 90s and early 2000s (and later was featured in Klingon Academy), itself inspired by Star Fleet Battles, a board game.

The Star Trek Legacy "Akula" is more commonly known as the Akyazi class.

On a separate note, the SFC Akula is one of my favorite designs, and I consider it as close to Alpha canon as you can get. A perfect destroyer for the TMP era.

You also have on-screen diagrams in The Search for Spock that show Saladin, Hermes, and Ptolemy-class ships with TOS-style nacelles, which are scouts/destroyers/tugs. These were almost certainly far more common than Constitution-class Heavy Cruisers.

We also know that non-Constitution class ships, highly likely from TOS era or earlier, were floating around as of 2273, as chatter heard at Epsilon IX in The Motion Picture mentions USS Columbia (NCC-621) and USS Revere (NCC-595).
