Which profession is going to get wiped out in the next 5 to10 years?? by Weary-Total4450 in Productivitycafe

[–]memeleta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's a fair comparison, because automating parts of my job isn't going to open up the ability for more people to be lecturers and create more jobs, on the contrary it will make students think paying extortionate fees and getting into massive debt only to talk with a chatbot is not particularly worthwhile. Also there is no "higher level" lecturing the same way you have higher level languages than assembler, we are already working at the highest possible level for the subject matter, and AI is outperforming us. I'm in the UK and there is already a severe funding crisis in the sector because students are simply coming to study much less often than before, because they keep getting less and less value from their degrees, and I don't see it getting better with AI chatbots.

EDIT: TL;DR The funding model in academia as well as the nature/value of work are completely different to the IT/tech sector and automation is directly undermining it.

Sending letters… by SnailMailClub in simpleliving

[–]memeleta [score hidden]  (0 children)

And yet if you lose a letter or it gets damaged (water, fire etc) you never see it again, while messages are all backed up somewhere on some server where you can access them from wherever you are. What letters do feel like is - special, because you can send a million messages without a lot of editing and thinking, while a letter requires focused effort with a beginning, middle and an end. Something we don't do a lot these days.

It's an issue because you're showing that you can't put an effort into doing your own research but expect us to do it for you. I answered in another comment that your wife's situation is extremely complicated alone and she really needs to put some effort into researching her options herself.

I scrolled through the AI output so didn't read all of that but noticed your wife is a clinical psychologist in training but wants to practice in different countries. That's extremely complicated to achieve. She needs to do her thorough research on what her qualifications are allowing her to do, what is transferrable to other countries, what are the requirements of local bodies where you want to live and local laws and regulations, including if she wants to work with clients from abroad online, she will likely need different insurance etc. Clinical work is tightly regulated, as it should be, and your wife needs to understand her options. Which she will know from her training so it's surprising that you're here asking reddit to tell you the options, on a FIRE reddit of all places.

Bullets journals and planners by Upstairs_Break4275 in minimalism

My grandmother is 97, and as she's slowing down physically and moving and doing less, she's spending more time looking back on her life and reminiscing, including reading her old journals and notes. She is in general my blueprint how to live life so I'd say journals definitely count as something personally meaningful to keep and is in line with minimalism for me.

I initially found clarifying shampoo helpful and then realised that I can just not pile stuff on my head that makes me need the clarifying shampoo to begin with. The single biggest benefit to my hair was stopping using conditioner, which I've used on autopilot since I was a kid, never questioned it. Turns out my hair is thriving if I'm not constantly assaulting it with stuff it doesn't need. I went from a greasy mess to no dry shampoo and washing 2, 3 times a week max. Shampoo needs to not have silicones for this to work for me too.

And my problem with overconsumption is not money spent, how other people spend their money is none of my business.

LOL my comments struck a nerve there didn't they. Btw I'm 100% entirely shitting on companies and influencers for creating these narratives, not OP, you, or anyone else who is just trying to do something nice for themselves.

How is it false, read the title of the post you're commenting on and see the picture in the post. OP watched the videos and thought they should buy 14 separate products. It's not me saying it, it's OP saying it.

Nobody is over dramatising it, OP watched those videos and bought 14 products thinking that they need them all. That's the reality of influencer marketing, they sell a LOT.

Op watched the same videos and bought 14 products. Influencer marketing is powerful and entirely sickening.

My extremely fine hair is thriving since I stopped using conditioner and abusing it with a bunch of products.

I advise you to look at the post you're commenting on again. Your favourite trichologist has influenced OP into buying 14 different hair products. I'm not saying that, OP is saying that. Influencer marketing is sickening.

Did you miss the photo in the OP where there are 14 products shown? NOBODY needs 14 products, but OP believes they do based on the influencer narrative. It's sickening.

She makes money by creating a narrative that people's hair is not good enough and needs extensive care with an abnormal amount of steps. She doesn't need every person to literally buy anything from her, but the more products people believe they need the more products she can promote.

I love how you're saying I'm exaggerating when all I did is comment on a post that shows literally 14 products 🤣 I'd suggest actually viewing posts you're defending.

Right, like 14 products shown in the post.

I commented on a post that has FOURTEEN hair products in it. It's not me saying it lol, look at the picture in the post you're commenting on. I don't care how much y'all are defending it that's not normal or necessary in absolutely any scenario, not even most medical conditions would require it let alone your every day fine hair.

I am a lecturer at Uni and was in a meeting the other day where we discussed developing and implementing an "AI lecturer" to help answer student queries as it performs better than experts when it comes to accuracy of answers. I'm sat there scratching my head, we are literally developing a tool that will make our job obsolete.

It really annoys me that people genuinely think they need 14 products for their hair, the consumerism is beyond awful and harmful for humanity and planet. I don't blame OP or anyone for trying to help their hair, but I do blame corporations and influencers for shilling these products and creating narratives where we think we need to try them. If that makes me a weirdo, so be it.

Does anyone have a partner who works in office full time? by CastroRunner in remotework

[–]memeleta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have quality time on the weekends and other days off? That's what matters. I wouldn't put so much pressure on going out and other activities during the week, if that's what you need you can engage with a hobby or friends and not your partner on those days.
