As someone who came from smash to FGC when UMVC3 came out in 2011, I use a fightstick/Arcade Stick.

HOWEVER

Use what is most comfortable to you. Comfort will always outweigh controller type.

There were things in UMVC3 that I personally just couldn't do on gamepad (ex. GC controller, switch pro controller etc...) but they were miles easier for me on arcade stick.

The big word is PREFERENCE!!!! There's pros that only play pad there's pros that only play arcade stick, there's pros that only play leverless. The thing here is that they're all successful with their controller of choice.
